Brian Jungen by Kitty Scott Pdf

Examining the career of Indigenous artist Brian Jungen, this gorgeously illustrated book highlights his ability to transform everyday objects into extraordinary sculpture. Born in the remote northern community of Fort St. John, British Columbia to an Indigenous mother and a Swiss-Canadian father, Brian Jungen's dual heritage often provides the themes and subject matter for his work. Over the past twenty years, he has created an extensive and imaginative body of sculpture using repurposed material. This book looks at over 80 sculptures, drawings, and film stills, from whale skeletons composed of white plastic chairs and gas cans decorated with floral bead-work designs to totem pole-like forms constructed out of golf bags and Northwest Coast masks made out of repurposed sneakers. The book also includes a selection of archival materials including photographs, images of the artist working, unrealized works, and research pictures. Essays, an interview with the artist, and a timeline round out this generously illustrated book that details Jungen's deep material explorations which highlight a long history of inequality, a concern for the environment, and a profound commitment to Indigenous ways of knowing and making. NATØ: Narrative Architecture in Postmodern London by Claire Jamieson Pdf

Chronicling the last radical architectural group of the twentieth century – NATØ (Narrative Architecture Today) – who emerged from the Architectural Association at the start of the 1980s, this book explores the group’s work which echoed a wider artistic and literary culture that drew on the specific political, social and physical condition of 1980s London. It traces NATؒs identification with a particular stream of post-punk, postmodern expression: a celebration of the abject, an aesthetic of entropy, and a do-it-yourself provisionality. NATØ has most often been documented in reference to Nigel Coates (the instigator of NATØ), which has led to a one-sided, one-dimensional record of NATؒs place in architectural history. This book sets out a more detailed, contextual history of NATØ, told through photographs, drawings, and ephemera, restoring a truer polyvocal narrative of the group’s ethos and development.

Garth Evans Sculpture by Garth Evans,Michael Brenson Pdf

Garth Evans is a sculptor as capable of evoking intimacy and simplicity as he is of dealing with the monumental and the timeless. This complete survey of his unique career is long overdue, and reveals a wealth of innovative and powerful work, much of it previously unseen in print. As narratives of British sculpture are reconsidered, Evans is emerging as one of the most creative and influential artists to bridge the generation of Antony Caro and Philip King with that of Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Antony Gormley, Alison Wilding and Bill Woodrow. This investigation into Evans's hugely varied, visually eventful and challenging practice explores connections across geographies and timeframes as well as contextualizing major changes and new departures in his work. Garth Evans was born in Manchester in 1934 and settled in the USA at the midpoint of his career. He has exhibited widely in Europe and America since the early 1960s, and his work is represented in major public and private collections in Australia, Brazil, Portugal, USA and UK (including the Arts Council Collection, Leeds City Art Galleries, the British Museum, the V&A and Tate). Evans has been the recipient of numerous awards as well as holding a number of distinguished teaching positions. Since 1988, he has taught at the Studio School in New York City where he is head of sculpture.

Abject Performances by Leticia Alvarado Pdf

In Abject Performances Leticia Alvarado draws out the irreverent, disruptive aesthetic strategies used by Latino artists and cultural producers who shun standards of respectability that are typically used to conjure concrete minority identities. In place of works imbued with pride, redemption, or celebration, artists such as Ana Mendieta, Nao Bustamante, and the Chicano art collective known as Asco employ negative affects—shame, disgust, and unbelonging—to capture experiences that lie at the edge of the mainstream, inspirational Latino-centered social justice struggles. Drawing from a diverse expressive archive that ranges from performance art to performative testimonies of personal faith-based subjection, Alvarado illuminates modes of community formation and social critique defined by a refusal of identitarian coherence that nonetheless coalesce into Latino affiliation and possibility.
