Lumasaba Riddles and Proverbs. Characteristics, Ideology, and Classification by Arnold Wangwe Pdf
Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject African Studies - Linguistics, grade: A, Makerere University (Faculty of Arts), course: Literature, language: English, abstract: This paper examines the intricate characteristics of Lumasaba (a language spoken in eastern Uganda) riddles and proverbs. It argues that these literary trajectories are poetically related. Through these oral literature forms, the ideologies of the Bamasaba people are enhanced. By studying these verbal esoteric aphorisms, the riddles, which have been relegated as children's playthings are given literary significance. Even the seemingly nosensical sound riddles project important messages to the reader, therefore worth of literary inquiry. The collection and interpretation of oral literature forms from predominantly orate societies is testimony to the notion that the libraries of society are fast passing away, and it is incumbent upon the young generation to document these verbal forms for posterity. In the discourse, an exegesis of the riddles and proverbs have been made to categorise them basing on literary features such as rhyme and rhythm, the symbolic elements, alliterations, metaphors, similies, onomatopoeiac expressions, parallelism, repetition, and rhetorical questions among other literary forms of expression. This interconnectedness points to the fluidity of oral texts to an extent that no single context is sufficient to explain their meanings. Sound riddles present a fascinating interpretation of the Bamasaba cosmology. They show that even untranslatable or nonsensical words give an insight into understanding the surrounding environment of the Bamasaba. Themes of life, ecological relationships and rain are pertinent aspects of Bamasaba’s world contained in riddles. It is established that language permeates the epicenter of riddles and proverbs. Of the literary features that imbue them, symbolism stands out as the most important feature. What is peculiar about Lumasaba riddles and proverbs is that regardless of the categorization or structure, they possess a variety of meanings that bring out core ideologies of the Bamasaba. The classification of proverbs into literal, symbolic and philosophical categories enables us to decipher the riddle in the proverb; we look for what it signifies. Harlod Garfinkel's theory of ethnomethodology has been applied to make sense of Lumasaba riddles especially the tenet of the centrality of langauge that communicates the world views and the philosophy of life of the people. Riddles are conduits of Lumasaba cultural values intended to socialize children and adults alike into useful citizens of the community.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Hannover (Englisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: The paper deals with different types of figurative language and the question of why and how these should be taught in second language teaching. In order to prove that figurative language is essential in communication and therefore needs to receive more attention in schools, I start by analysing and comparing the concepts of metaphors, idioms and proverbs. Many scholars have discussed metaphors and so as to outline the most important aspects, I refer to Lakoff, Johnson, Ortony and Langlotz amongst others. Those aspects will include the differences between novel and conventional metaphors, the different functions that metaphors fulfil and the phenomenon of mixed metaphors. When discussing idioms I focus on their relationship to metaphorical language, the aspect of frozenness and their functions as well as other topics. Here, scholars like Swinney, Skandara and Götz are quoted and their propositions towards idiomatic language are analysed. To end the first part of the paper I discuss the relationship of proverbs to metaphors and idioms and base this part on Norrick in order to focus on didactic content and the issue of distinguishing between a proverb's literal and figurative meaning. After having given the survey of those concepts, I turn to the part of explaining why it is so important to teach figurative language and I do that by drawing on Ortony's theses of compactness, inexpressibility and vividness. Furthermore, Katz's theory of metaphor as politeness is examined and also Liu's view on idioms as containing cultural references. To end this theoretical paper with an idea of how to use the information practically, the last section deals with the question of how figurative language is best taught. The methods presented are based on a preceding part of background information on h
Bekwarra Proverbs, Oral Literature, Indigenous Knowledge and Culture Sustenance by Odey Simon Robert Pdf
Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject African Studies - Linguistics, grade: A.1, , language: English, abstract: The place of proverbs and oral literature in the sustenance of a culture cannot be over-emphasised. It is quite regrettable and disheartening that these aspects of culture are grossly ignored and abused these days across many cultures, for which most contemporary members of such cultures know little or nothing in/about these indigenous knowledge and cultures. Bekwarra is one of those cultures, with the contemporary Bekwarra acting negatively towards their culture in almost all phases. This paper is intended to rouse the interest and attention of such peoples, not only the Bekwarra, to their proverbs, oral literature and indigenous cultures towards their sustenance. It concludes that it is imperative to sustain cultures like Bekwarra through these aspects of culture, which involves constant/sustained interest in, teaching and learning cum transmission of these invaluable aspects of culture across generations. They should be constantly preserved, and taught both at home and school.
Food and Drink Idioms in English by Laura Pinnavaia Pdf
Idioms carry an aura of mystery for all speakers, owing to the discrepancy between their literal and non-literal meanings. This book clears up some of these ambiguities, by examining a series of expressions that have derived from the most instinctive and essential of all human behaviour: eating and drinking. The quantity and quality of 276 food and drink idioms are explored, investigating two hundred and fifty years of English monolingual lexicography and forty years of usage as attested by contemporary linguistic corpora. The examination of these idioms’ syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, historical, social and cultural characteristics will foster in speakers a whole new approach to idiom comprehension and usage, and will constitute thought-provoking ground for further research in other idiom domains.
The Anglicization of European Lexis by Cristiano Furiassi,Virginia Pulcini,Félix Rodríguez González Pdf
This volume explores the lexical influence of English on European languages, a topical theme with linguistic and cultural implications. It provides an extensive introductory background to a cross-national view of English-induced lexical borrowing, posing crucial analytical questions such as what counts as an Anglicism. It also offers a typology of borrowings with examples from the languages represented: Armenian, Danish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Serbian, Spanish, and Swedish. The articles in this volume address general and language-specific issues related to the analysis and collection of Anglicisms, extending the scope to the largely unexplored area of phraseology and bringing new insights into corpus-based and corpus-driven methodologies. This volume fits into a well-established and constantly developing research field and will appeal to scholars interested in the spread of English as an international language, contact and contrastive linguistics, lexicology and lexicography, and computer corpus lexicography.
Demonstrates how proverbs and to a lesser extent proverbial expressions, have played a significant role in political life during the 20th century. Takes as major examples the speeches and writings of Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, and Harry Truman to show how proverbs can be brought into the service of most any ideology. Also traces the use of proverbs and their cartoon analogues during the five decades of Cold War propaganda, and proverbial slurs against Native Americans and Asian Americans.
