Albuquerque Then and Now by Mo Palmer Pdf

Albuquerque Then and Now matches vintage photographs with contemporary shots, documenting the change from a popular motel stop on Route 66 to a modern hi-tech city specializing in health care. Albuquerque has survived through Spanish, Mexican, and American rule. A thriving tourist industry rode in on the railroad in 1880 and grew with "tin can tourists" passing through on Route 66. The vast majority of roadside motels and auto courts are gone now (Aztec), but some (El Vado) have been repurposed, and a handful (Luna Lodge) struggle on. A building boom in the 1930s and 1940s left the city with many original Art Deco structures, as well as the fantastic Pueblo Deco of the KiMo Theatre. There are also many examples of Mission Revival Style architecture and other historic adobe buildings. Today the city is known for its sophisticated medical care, first established during the tuberculosis epidemic; for its technological facilities, seeded by World War II; and for its cosmopolitan ambience. Plus it provided the locations for the global hit Netflix series, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

Flying the Lindbergh Line: Then & Now by Robert F. Kirk Pdf

Flying in the early 20th Century was dangerous business. Aircraft were made of sticks and cloth and engines failed at alarming rates. Those who flew risked both accidents and death. However, some saw this stumbling attempt to master the skies as an opportunity to bring the human race forward. They had a vision of stylish travel in the skies combining comfort, speed and profit. Such was the vision of Transcontinental Air Transports Lindbergh Line that began the first scheduled coast-to-coast airline passenger service in 1929. Relive the adventure of that time and travel with the author as he flies what remains today of the Lindbergh Line.

Growing Up and Looking Out by Katherine Augustine Pdf

Katherine Augustine is an extraordinary person. This book tells Katherine’s story in her own words. It is drawn entirely from a selection of her writings in various publications, complete copies of which are available in archives in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The book is in two parts. The first, “My Life From Laguna Pueblo to Albuquerque” is Katherine’s autobiography from her childhood to the start of her nursing career. The second, “Tales My Grandmother Told Me and Being Laguna,” is a collection of Laguna Pueblo stories she learned as a child and personal observations of feast days and public ceremonies. For over thirty years she wrote stories about her life and observations of growing up at Laguna Pueblo, along with articles on current events, for several publications; these included the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center newsletter Pueblo Horizons, a column for the now defunct evening newspaper the Albuquerque Tribune, articles for the Albuquerque Laguna Colony Newsletter, and Round the Roundhouse, the New Mexico State Employees newsletter. Photographs in the first section are from Katherine’s family album, while images illustrating stories from Laguna Pueblo are derived from photographs of prehistoric art in the collection of Paul R. Secord.

That Left Turn at Albuquerque by Scott Phillips Pdf

A hardboiled valentine to the Golden State, That Left Turn at Albuquerque marks the return of noir master Scott Phillips. Douglas Rigby, attorney-at-law, is bankrupt. He’s just sunk his last $200,000—a clandestine “loan” from his last remaining client, former bigshot TV exec Glenn Haskill—into a cocaine deal gone wrong. The lesson? Never trust anyone else with the dirty work. Desperate to get back on top, Rigby formulates an art forgery scheme involving one of Glenn’s priceless paintings, a victimless crime. But for Rigby to pull this one off, he’ll need to negotiate a whole cast of players with their own agendas, including his wife, his girlfriend, an embittered art forger, Glenn’s resentful nurse, and the man’s money-hungry nephew. One misstep, and it all falls apart—will he be able to save his skin? Written with hard-knock sensibility and wicked humor, Scott Phillips’s newest novel will cement him as one of the great crime writers of the 21st century.

THEN NOW WHENEVER by Regis McCafferty Pdf

Then…Now…Whenever… is composed of twelve short stories that span centuries and continents from Victorian England, to contemporary America, to the realm of vivid imagination. THEN is composed of four stories prior to the mid 1930’s, three of which are set in Victorian England with an inquiry agent at the time of Sherlock Holmes. The last of the four is the story of a miner looking for work in the coal mining fields of Kentucky during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. NOW is also composed of five contemporary stories. Two, regarding an ex cop from Cleveland who drinks and smokes too much and finds himself neck deep and personally involved in two murders while living in New Mexico. Two more involve ordinary people thrown together by circumstance and hard luck with unpredictable results, while the final story of this group is one of far-off Pakistan and good intentions gone astray. WHENEVER makes up the last three: macabre, nightmares of horror that visit in dreams on the darkest of nights when we are alone with our own demons. Dreams that one hopes will never be repeated…

Beautiful Swift Fox by Robert Gish Pdf

The American Southwest has assumed the status of a cultural icon over the last few decades, and one of the writers who helped it to do so was Erna Fergusson, named by the Hopis Beautiful Swift Fox. An Anglo American whose travel writing featured the multi-ethnicity of her region, she popularized the culture and landscapes of her native New Mexico and its surrounding states in a range of writing that prefigured the genre-defying art that has come to be called the New Journalism.Much has been written about New Mexico's remarkable Fergusson family, especially brother Harvey and his novels. But Erna Fergusson's literary career has been largely overlooked. An iconoclast at the forefront of the Southwest Renaissance movement, Erna gained a wide reputation beginning in the 1930s for her "written versions of the Southwest," which embraced the complexities of regional culture and sympathetically and intelligently portrayed the Indian and Mexican influences.Distinguished Southwestern writer Robert Franklin Gish assesses Fergussons's literary contributions and unlocks the inner workings of the prose stylist who operated at the interstices of genres. With his postmodern reappraisal of the creative nonfiction forms she used, Gish prompts readers to reconsider how they view the art of nonfiction writing. Gish argues persuasively that Fergusson's identity as a native New Mexican and the region's singular landscape informed the attitudes and values present in her art. He explores the ways her entrepreneurial stint as a New Mexico tour guide during the 1920s and 1930s shaped the organizational strategies for her writing. He considers thoughtfully her various forms of writing and how she used travelogue, journalistic report, popular history, and persuasive essay to elevate the Southwest to prominence. Gish shows her writing as highly evocative, descriptive, and metaphorical, defying the conventions of the nonfiction forms she used and paving the way for America's school of New Journalism.Beautiful Swift Fox is not strictly biography; nor does it, in a traditional sense, seek to explicate a body of work. Rather, like its subject, it bridges genres, offering a meditation on one Southwestern writer's sense of place.
