Song Interpretation in 21st-Century Pop Music by Ralf von Appen,André Doehring,Allan F. Moore Pdf

Existing books on the analysis of popular music focus on theory and methodology, and normally discuss parts of songs briefly as examples. The impression often given is that songs are being chosen simply to illuminate and exemplify a theoretical position. In this book the obverse is true: songs take centre stage and are given priority. The authors analyse and interpret them intensively from a variety of theoretical positions that illuminate the song. Thus, methods and theories have to prove their use value in the face of a heterogeneous, contemporary repertoire. The book brings together researchers from very different cultural backgrounds and encourages them to compare their different hearings and to discuss the ways in which they make sense of specific songs. All songs analysed are from the new millennium, most of them not older than three years. Because the most widely popular styles are too often ignored by academics, this book aims to shed light on how million sellers work musically. Therefore, it encompasses a broad palette, highlighting mainstream pop (Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Lucenzo, Amy McDonald), but also accounting for critically acclaimed ’indie’ styles (Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, PJ Harvey), R&B (Destiny’s Child, Janelle Monae), popular hard rock (Kings of Leon, Rammstein), and current electronic music (Andrés, Björk). By concentrating on 13 well-known songs, this book offers some model analyses that can very easily be studied at home or used in seminars and classrooms for students of popular music at all academic levels.

The Forms Of Music by Donald Francis Tovey Pdf

Sir Donald Francis Tovey was born in 1875, Donald Francis Tovey was a British musicologist and composer. He took classical honors with his B.A. at Oxford in 1898, and became a pianist of the first rank, though he never sought a virtuoso career. This book contains all the articles which Tovey wrote for the Encyclopaedia Britannica, as they now appear there, with the exception of one on ‘Modern Music’ and the biographies. The book was set up from printed slips, and thus follows the text finally approved and corrected by the author. The very long musical examples are printed in full. In book form, a few minor alterations have been necessary, mostly in the excising of references, and the bringing of the ‘printer’s style’ into line with that of Tovey’s other books. An occasional slip in the musical examples has been corrected.

The Musical Charlatan by Johann Kuhnau,John Raymond Russell Pdf

This first English translation of a late Baroque German novel makes available one of the most interesting and entertaining works of the seventeenth century. Kuhnau, a noted musician, composer and editor, writes in an unusually realistic style, describing the chequered career of the charlatan Caraffa, who believes that in order to succeed in the musical world in Germany, one must pretend to be an Italian. His tricks and deceptions, which his German colleagues see through with little difficulty, provide memorable comic scenes, and at the same time the book gives an informative picture of every-day life, especially that of the contemporary musical world in particular.

Weill's Musical Theater by Stephen Hinton Pdf

In the first musicological study of Kurt Weill’s complete stage works, Stephen Hinton charts the full range of theatrical achievements by one of twentieth-century musical theater’s key figures. Hinton shows how Weill’s experiments with a range of genres—from one-act operas and plays with music to Broadway musicals and film-opera—became an indispensable part of the reforms he promoted during his brief but intense career. Confronting the divisive notion of "two Weills"—one European, the other American—Hinton adopts a broad and inclusive perspective, establishing criteria that allow aspects of continuity to emerge, particularly in matters of dramaturgy. Tracing his extraordinary journey as a composer, the book shows how Weill’s artistic ambitions led to his working with a remarkably heterogeneous collection of authors, such as Georg Kaiser, Bertolt Brecht, Moss Hart, Alan Jay Lerner, and Maxwell Anderson.
