War In My Town by E. Graziani Pdf

Bruna is the youngest of seven children, living an idyllic life in a small Italian village in northern Tuscany. Though the Second World War has been raging in Europe for some time, the dangers haven't seemed to reach her, and the Italian leader Mussolini's allegiance with Hitler and the distant reports of fighting seem far away. But before long, Bruna's brothers are called to fight and by 1943 food rationing and shortages begin to take a toll on her family. Soon the Italian people turn against their fascist regime and war comes to the region. When the retreating Nazis occupy her village, Bruna struggles to cope and help her mother and sisters stand up to the soldiers. Her peaceful life is shattered when her beloved village and its occupants find themselves in the centre of the fighting between the Nazis and the Allied forces pursuing them - the final front defended by the Nazis in Europe.

My Little Town by David Tipmore Pdf

Northern urbanite D. B. Tipmore describes the culture shock he experienced after moving to a small Alabama town in My Little Town: A Pilgrim's Portrait of a Uniquely Southern Place. From chicken salad to national politics, Tipmore shares the unique character of the South through the microcosm of his small town. My Little Town turns the Yankee-comes-to-Dixie literary genre outside in, examining Lovelady, Alabama, through the eyes of someone who should never have been living there and yet found himself there for more than a decade. With a keen appreciation of its peculiarly Southern tableau, the book lovingly scrutinizes an Alabama village short chapter by short chapter, accompanied by photographer Frank Williams's images. Funeral visitations, poisoned soup luncheons, Pilgrimage hosting, supper clubs, family feuds, Obama Day parades, politics, Jews, and chicken salad recipes are all treated with a voice of singular precision and affection. Simultaneously author D. B. Tipmore couples this fresh view of Southern small-town life with his own narrative of a worldly urban nomad who hopes to find a home in one of the most isolated areas of the United States, peculiarly defined by its racial history and regional mores. By conflating the two stories, My Little Town challenges the reader as much as the author, raising serious questions about our ability as Americans to transcend our regional identities and cultural complexities.

Town Is by the Sea by Joanne Schwartz Pdf

Winner of CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal Winner of the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award A young boy wakes up to the sound of the sea, visits his grandfather’s grave after lunch and comes home to a simple family dinner with his family, but all the while his mind strays to his father digging for coal deep down under the sea. Stunning illustrations by Sydney Smith, the award-winning illustrator of Sidewalk Flowers, show the striking contrast between a sparkling seaside day and the darkness underground where the miners dig. With curriculum connections to communities and the history of mining, this beautifully understated and haunting story brings a piece of Canadian history to life. The ever-present ocean and inevitable pattern of life in a Cape Breton mining town will enthrall children and move adult readers.

My Town's (Extra) Ordinary People by Mikel Casal Pdf

This smart and whimsical portrait of the inhabitants of a town reveals the joys of discovering what makes each person unique and extraordinary. Nico lives in a small coastal town, a place like any other, with ordinary neighbors and friends. But are they really ordinary? As Nico meanders through his town he introduces readers to his friends. There's Josean, who works on the docks and who could be an Olympic rower. Peru recites all different kinds of poetry to his son. Nico's best friend, Telmo, is a skateboarder with a wild imagination. Eva plays a mean jazz guitar and gives lessons so she can pay her rent and go to school. There's Keiko, a potter; Dave, who is really tall; Sara, who owns a bookstore; Claud, a waiter whose real passion is astronomy. Each of these people, twenty-one in all, is depicted in charming, colorful drawings that celebrate quirkiness and individuality. This book encourages young readers to get to know the people around them and discover how everyone is different in their own wonderful way.

My Town by Delphine Doreau Pdf

My Town contains a mini-community for readers to build ? bringing new meaning to the term "pop-up store!" Unlike typical "paper doll" books that focus on fashion, My Town is full of perforated buildings and animals ready to be popped out, decorated, and played with by children. Buildings range from various styles of houses to all kinds of boutique storefronts. Set up shop as a baker, a florist, a grocer, a bookseller, or an auto mechanic ? there's a store to match every reader's special interest. Dozens of animal characters can be added to the scene and some can be colored in, too. A sturdy fold-out map at the back of the book gives readers a place to arrange their community. Plus, My Town creator Delphine Doreau has prepared a number of free downloads for readers to print, color, and use to expand their towns (address included in book). Instructions are warm and simple and read more like a story than like step-by-step directions, so children will be engaged in reading while they craft. And once completed, the miniature village will complement playtime with beloved toys perfectly ? add cars, stuffed animals, and more!

My Town: Motown! by Bob Chancia Pdf

This is the story of one man's burden for the city he lived in and loved. Detroit, once America's leading industrial city, falls with political corruption, racial intolerance, and its auto industry's refusal to change. Bob spearheads the partnering of his New York City church with an inner-city Detroit church, trusting God's power to take one small step in revitalizing Detroit. This book may challenge you to trust God to raise you from your own struggles. "Bob Chancia has accurately and passionately communicated the issues facing Detroit as well as the hope for Detroit-the Gospel of Jesus Christ ... because Jesus is the only hope for Detroit and all men. Bob, a native New Yorker, loves Detroit as much as we native Detroiters. I couldn't put this book down! A must read!" -Diane Denaro Frank, founder and executive director, AngelHouse.org "Here is the account of a miracle touching two great cities. New York's Calvary Baptist Church, by joining with Detroit's Citadel of Faith Covenant Church, has displayed the power and presence of Christ in helping bring a once great city back to vibrant life. Bob Chancia has beautifully and forcefully recounted this miracle that touches two cities." -Rev. James O. Rose, pastor emeritus, Calvary Baptist Church, New York City; Dallas Theological Seminary board of directors for nineteen years.

Memories of My Town by Åström Anna-Maria,Korkiakangas Pirjo,Olsson Pia Pdf

The volume Memories of my Town is an exploration into how town dwellers experience their environment in a complicated way .As people in urban milieus relate themselves to the environment, this takes place on many levels, where especially the time level becomes problematic. The urban buildings and settings can be looked upon as a kind of collective history, as carriers or witnesses of times past. But it is only the town dwellers that experience urban time itself, the time they live in, but through their memories also times past. In this past some elements take symbolicaly dense expressions. Through reliving and narrating their experiences the symbolically important factors in the this urban relationship will be outlined for investigations conserning three towns, Helsinki, the capital, Viborg, the ceded and lost Carelian town, and Jyväskylä, a town with dense commercial and civilisatory dimensions in the middle of Finland. The symbolic aspects are the kern in all the articles of the book Memories of my Town. The aim of the book and its articles has been to use different theoretical concepts as guidelines in analysing the different narrative texts. Thus the articles are to be seen as independent contributions to the scientific discussion about places, urbanism, memories and narratives. The ethnological outlook is on the other hand an outcome of the joint project Town Dwellers and their Places., whereby the articles substancially relate to one another. Thus the book can also be seen as a joint result of this urban project, which was sponsored by the Finnish Academy.
