Human activities that have altered the earth's chemistry are discussed in terms of their potential ecological and economic consequences. Recommended actions include: (1) reduction of fossil fuel use; (2) support of new energy technologies; (3) establishment of standards for residential appliances; (4) increase of recycling efforts; (5) preservation of forests and planting of trees; (6) elimination of lead in gasoline; (7) more extensive toxicity testing; (8) use of an integrative pest management program; and (9) detoxification of wastes.
