In accordance with the mission of AGARD the Structures and Materials Panel (SMP) has always kept an open eye for the possibilities to sponsor collaborative programmes of research. AGARD is unique in its ability to realise the cooperation of laboratories in up to sixteen nations. In this way AGARD distinguishes itself from other international scientific and technical organisations. In the 1970s the SMP decided to embark on collaborative research activities in the area of fatigue. One of the first activities was the Corrosion Fatigue Cooperative Testing Programme (CFCTP), the recursor to the Fatigue in Aircraft Corrosion Testing (FACT) programme. Both programmes are described in this report. Failure by fatigue and degradation by corrosion continue to be major considerations in aircraft design. Environmental effects influence both initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks, and dynamic loading may cause more rapid deterioration of corrosion protection systems. Therefore the conjuoint action of dynamic loading and environmental attack, i.e. corrosion fatigue, requires special attention. Many corrosion fatigue tests have been done on aluminum alloys. However, few included critical structural details like joints, under realistic cyclic load histories and in service-like environments. Even fewer used practical corrosion protection systems. These aspects are specifically addressed bye the CFCTP and FACT programmes. The results provide a significant contribution to the understanding of aircraft corrosion fatigue and should encourage further investigation in this difficult and challenging area of aerospace technology.

The structural and engineering property requirements for widespread deployment of aluminium-lithium (Al-Li) alloys in aircraft are discussed, particularly with respect to commercial transport aircraft. The development of Al-Li alloys has been driven mainly by the fact that additions of lithium to aluminium alloys lowers the density and increases the elastic modulus, thereby offering the potential of significant weight savings with respect to conventional (non-lithium containing) alloys. The first use of Al-Li alloys in aircraft goes back to the late 1950s (alloy AA 2020) and mid-1960s (alloys 1420 and 1421). These materials are referred to as the 1st generation Al-Li alloys. Subsequently there have been two major development programmes resulting in the 2nd and 3rd generation alloys. Development of the 2nd generation alloys began in the 1970s and continued through the 1980s. Attempts were made to develop families of Al-Li alloys for widespread replacement of conventional alloys. Ultimately this was unsuccessful except for ‘niche’ applications. The failure to find widespread application was associated largely with the too-high lithium contents of the alloys (typically more than 2 wt%). This resulted in serious disadvantages, including mechanical property anisotropy, low short-transverse ductility and fracture toughness, and thermal instability. Development of the 3rd generation Al-Li alloys began in the late 1980s and is ongoing. These alloys have significantly reduced lithium contents (0.75 – 1.8 wt%) and there are other important compositional changes. Silver and zinc have been added for strength, and zinc improves the corrosion resistance; and manganese is added besides zirconium, which was already present in 2nd generation alloys, to control recrystallization and texture. These differences and improved knowledge about thermomechanical processing and heat-treatment have resulted in a family of alloys with significant property advantages covering all major structural areas and applications for transport aircraft.

The conventional approach to through-life-support for aircraft structures can be divided into the following phases: (i) detection of defects, (ii) diagnosis of their nature and significance, (iii) forecasting future behaviour-prognosis, and (iv) pre scription and implementation of remedial measures including repairs. Considerable scientific effort has been devoted to developing the science and technology base for the first three phases. Of particular note is the development of fracture mechanics as a major analytical tool for metals, for predicting residual strength in the presence of cracks ( damage tolerance) and rate of crack propagation under service loading. Intensive effort is currently being devoted to developing similar approaches for fibre composite structures, particularly to assess damage tolerance and durability in the presence of delamination damage. Until recently there has been no major attempt to develop a science and tech nology base for the last phase, particularly with respect to the development of repairs. Approaches are required which will allow assessment of the type and magnitude of defects amenable to repair and the influence of the repair on the stress intensity factor (or some related parameter). Approaches are also required for the development and design of optimum repairs and for assessment of their durability.
