Alvord's History of Noble County, Indiana (Classic Reprint) by Samuel E. Alvord Pdf
Excerpt from Alvord's History of Noble County, Indiana N laying Alvord's History of Noble county, Indiana, before its patrons, the publisher takes pardonable pride in the fact that he has fulfilled conscientiously every promise made in the prospectus and points with pleasure to the neatness of the typography; the quality of paper upon which the work is printed, and the elegance and durability of its binding. As to its contents the patrons have already had an opportunity of approving of their biographies before they were placed in type, while the illustrative department is the 725 plus ultra of the art. The History of Noble county, by Samuel E. Alvord, gives an accurate and minute history of the county, derived or deduced from the acts of the true creators thereof, as depicted in their biographies, from the day of the pioneers to the present time, and biography is, in fact, the true source of all social and political history. To those who have been uniformly obliging, and have kindly interested them selves in the success of this work, volunteering information and data, which has been very helpful in preparing this work, I desire to express my grateful and profound acknowledgment of their valued services. Britain to America by William E. Van Vugt Pdf
From 1820 to 1860, the United States and Great Britain were the two most closely interconnected countries in the world in terms of culture and economic growth. In an important addition to immigration history, William Van Vugt explores who came to America from Great Britain during this period and why. Disruptions and economic hardships, such as the repeal of Britain's protective Corn Laws, the potato famine, and technological displacement, do not account for the great mid-century surge of British migration to America. Rather than desperation and impoverishment, Van Vugt finds that immigrants were motivated by energy, tenacity, and ambition to improve their lives by taking advantage of opportunities in America. Drawing on county histories, passenger lists of immigrant ships, census data, and manuscript collections in Great Britain and the United States, Van Vugt sketches the lives and fortunes of dozens of immigrant farmers, miners, artisans, skilled and unskilled laborers, professionals, and religious nonconformists.

Ligonier by Daniel L. Replogle Pdf
Isaac Cavin, of Ligonier, Pennsylvania, traveled to Indiana in 1830. He returned home and married Elizabeth Marker in 1834, and they traveled together to northern Indiana. In May 1835, he planned a new town and named it Ligonier. He built his home a few miles north of town and lived there for 52 years. The next big players were two German Jewish peddlers, Solomon Mier and Frederick William Straus, who traveled to the United States and settled in Indiana. After training with their uncle, they moved to Ligonier around 1854 because they were told the railroad would be coming to Ligonier and that it might be a good place to start up a business. The suggestion led to some wonderful times for Ligonier. Straus developed one of his businesses into the largest farm brokerage firm in the United States, and Mier developed one of his businesses into one of the largest farmland dealers in the Midwest. Images of America: Ligonier explores one of the most unusual small towns in the United States.
