America's Galactic Foreign Legion - Book 12: The Ark by Walter Knight Pdf

When a huge ship is found buried deep beneath a desert oasis in an unpopulated area of New Colorado's New Gobi Desert, the race is on between the United States Galactic Federation and the Arthropodan Empire to claim its secrets. General Manny Lopez simply wants to loot the technological treasure. However, the spiders believe the ship is the mythical Ark from their tales of old. As Caldera Lake is suddenly overrun by the Galactic Foreign Legion and spider marines setting up camp on opposite sides of the line of demarcation running through the middle of the lake, it's soon discovered that the tranquil looking oasis does not offer a relaxing resort setting. Something's swimming in the lake, and it's hungry. Despite the danger, hotels and restaurants spring up to handle the influx of tourists and the curious making pilgrimages to catch a glimpse of the Ark. The race between the two sides continues amid disagreements and skirmishes unavoidable in a clash of cultural differences. But it's all done in a sportsmanlike manner - at least that's what Colonel Joey R. Czerinski 'The Toe' and General Manny 'The Ear' Lopez claim. Hungry crocs, graffiti taggers, midnight commando raids, tawdry torture, and lots of fried chicken all take a turn fuelling the laughter in this twelfth tale of the seriously silly military space saga. Bonus story VAMPIRE IN THE OUTFIELD included, first time in print!

America's Galactic Foreign Legion - Book 14 by Walter Knight Pdf

Colonel Joey R. Czerinski's back ... like a bad penny. The Hero of the Legion and Butcher of New Colorado is assigned to the Arthropodan Empire home world to guard the lavish United States Galactic Federation Embassy in Capital City, while also acting as a spy for General Lopez and the CIA. Things start out reasonably well, considering Czerinski's reputation with the spiders. During a Harlem Globetrotters exhibition game, the usual sports betting ensues, despite staunch spider resistance to Americanized cultural contamination. Things get out of hand when a spider riot erupts. Later, an old 'friend' stops by Czerinski's office and creates mischief that burns down the embassy. Immediately Czerinski blames the spiders. But real trouble's on the table when a legionnaire and member of the scorpion-persecuted Mantidae disappears at the Scorpion Embassy right before the Scorpion Ambassador invites the USGF Ambassador and staff to an Old Earth 'traditional' Thanksgiving meal with all the fixin's - including what they assume is turkey. Later, Czerinski's reassigned to a plum job back on New Colorado, watching a volcano. His former terrorist girlfriend and their teen son show up. Like father, like son, Joey Junior proves to be a handful of disciplinary problems looking for a place to happen - just in time for the imminent birthing of a new hybrid exoskeleton species. Eventually Czerinski discovers the spiders are tapping the volcano's power to develop a new technology that could change everything. With the usual inappropriate aplomb, Czerinski and crew take political incorrectness to a laughably absurd level in this fourteenth installment of the mind-damaging military space opera.

The New American Militarism by Andrew J. Bacevich Pdf

In this provocative book, Andrew Bacevich warns of a dangerous dual obsession that has taken hold of Americans, conservatives, and liberals alike. It is a marriage of militarism and utopian ideology--of unprecedented military might wed to a blind faith in the universality of American values. This mindset, the author warns, invites endless war and the ever-deepening militarization of U.S. policy. It promises not to perfect but to pervert American ideals and to accelerate the hollowing out of American democracy. As it alienates others, it will leave the United States increasingly isolated. It will end in bankruptcy, moral as well as economic, and in abject failure. With The New American Militarism, which has been updated with a new Afterword, Bacevich examines the origins and implications of this misguided enterprise. He shows how American militarism emerged as a reaction to the Vietnam War. Various groups in American society--soldiers, politicians on the make, intellectuals, strategists, Christian evangelicals, even purveyors of pop culture--came to see the revival of military power and the celebration of military values as the antidote to all the ills besetting the country as a consequence of Vietnam and the 1960s. The upshot, acutely evident in the aftermath of 9/11, has been a revival of vast ambitions and certainty, this time married to a pronounced affinity for the sword. Bacevich urges us to restore a sense of realism and a sense of proportion to U.S. policy. He proposes, in short, to bring American purposes and American methods--especially with regard to the role of the military--back into harmony with the nation's founding ideals.
