American Ambulance by Walter Mp Mccall Pdf

Walt McCall follows up his successful Classic American Ambulances 1900-1979 Photo Archive with a new and expanded title that fills in a heretofore missing chapter in American emergency vehicle history. This book chronicles in words and photos the evolution of the emergency ambulance in America over the past 100 years. From the slow jouncing horse-drawn vehicles in use at the turn of the last century to the fleet electronics-laden advanced life support units on the streets and highways of today - you'll find it all here. A fascinating story that is long overdue. The book is divided into chapters illustrating ambulances by decade. Each chapter begins with 2-4 pages of text describing major innovations and improvements introduced during the decade.

Diary Of Section VIII, Of The American Field Ambulance Service by Anon. Pdf

“As the quick transportation of wounded from the front to the nearest hospital is so great a factor in saving their lives, the American Ambulance Field Service was organized soon after the beginning of the war, and during the subsequent two years its achievement has fully demonstrated the value of its purpose. It has now in the field more than 300 motor ambulances. These are driven by young American volunteers, most of whom are graduates of American universities. To them has been successfully entrusted the vitally important matter of bringing the wounded in the shortest possible time from the trenches to places where the first surgical help can be given. Upon this first surgical help largely depends, naturally, the chance of the wounded surviving long enough to reach the base hospitals. These ambulances are grouped in sections of twenty to thirty cars, and attached to the French Armies. They carry wounded between the front and the Army Hospitals within the Army Zone. The French Army has cited these Sections more than twenty times for distinguished services; has conferred the Croix de Guerre, for bravery, on sixty-six members of the Service, and upon two, the Médaille Militaire, the highest honor for military valor in France.”—From the American Ambulance Service Leaflet included in the book.

The History of the American Pro-Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Paris (1815-1980) by Cameron Allen Pdf

Nestled in the heart of Paris, the American Cathedral of the Holy Trinity today stands as one of the great buildings of this ancient city. The history of the church itself presents a rich portrait of lively men and women who made it their mission to serve God and the people of Paris with all their hearts. Meticulously researched, A History of the American Pro-Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, Paris, 1815-1980 delivers an impressive narrative on each period of growth and development within this church. Beginning with the American Episcopal Church's need to serve Americans living in Paris, author Cameron Allen traces the development of the foundational congregation, the building of the first church, and its organization over the years. Allen draws on diary entries, church documents, and other primary sources to reveal the personalities behind church leaders, including W. O. Lamson, who formally established the church, the pivotal role of J. P. Morgan, organist L. K. Whipp, and German Colonel Rudolph Damrath, a Lutheran minister who took over during the German Occupation of France during World War II. In addition, he discusses the church's role during major historical events and its present needs. This inspiring, well-written history provides an excellent resource for current and past church members, rectory libraries, and historians.

Ambulance No. 10. Personal Letters Of A Driver At The Front [Illustrated Edition] by Leslie Buswell Pdf

“Letters describing the daily life and activities of a section of the voluntary “American Ambulance Field Service in France”, operating over a period of four months in 1915 in Lorraine in support of the French. These letters were written by a member of the American Ambulance Field Service in France, a voluntary organisation that came into existence soon after the outbreak of war and in 1916 had over 200 motor ambulances. They were driven by young American volunteers, most of them graduates of American universities, who got no salary but their living expenses were paid. The ambulances were grouped in sections of twenty to thirty vehicles, attached to the French Armies and carried the wounded between the front and Army Hospitals within the Army zone. They were particularly useful in Alsace where their light but powerful vehicles were able to cope with the steep mountain passes which French motor ambulances could not manage. The section in which the writer of these letters served and whose daily life and activities he describes was located in Lorraine. The letters cover a period of four months from June to October 1915 and were first published in 1915 under the title With the American Ambulance Field Service in France, changed to Ambulance No 10 for this 1916 edition, purely for the sake of brevity. There is plenty of action to read about in this correspondence and there are interesting photographs.”-N&M Print Version.

The Great War and Americans in Europe, 1914-1917 by Kenneth D. Rose Pdf

This book examines the experiences of Americans in Europe during the First World War prior to the U.S. declaration of war. Key groups include volunteer soldiers, doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, reporters, diplomats, peace activists, charitable workers, and long-term American expatriate civilians. What these Americans wrote about the Great War, as published in contemporary books and periodicals, provides the core source material for this volume. Author Kenneth D. Rose argues that these writings served the critical function of preparing the American public for the declaration of war, one of the most important decisions of the twentieth century, and defined the threat and consequences of the European conflict for Americans and American interests at home and abroad.

An American on the Western Front by Patrick Gregory,Elizabeth Nurser Pdf

This is the remarkable story of the American First World War serviceman Arthur Clifford Kimber. When his country entered the Great War in 1917, Kimber left Stanford University to carry the first official American flag to the Western Front. Fired by idealism for the French cause, the young student initially acted as a volunteer ambulance driver, before training as a pilot and taking part in dogfights against ‘the Boche’. His letters home give a vivid picture of what Kimber witnessed on his journey from Palo Alto, California to the front in France: keen-eyed descriptions of New York as it prepared for the forthcoming conflict, the privations of wartime Britain and France, and encounters with former president Theodore Roosevelt and Hollywood actress Lillian Gish. Kimber details his exhilaration, his everyday concerns and his horror as he adapts to an active wartime role. Arthur Clifford Kimber was one of the first Americans on the front line after the entry of the US into the war and, tragically, also one of the last to be buried there – killed in action just a few weeks before the end of the war. Here, his frank letters to his mother and brothers, compiled, edited and put in context by Patrick Gregory and Elizabeth Nurser, are published for the first time.

Battlefield Medicine by John S. Haller Pdf

In this first history of the military ambulance, historian John S. Haller Jr. documents the development of medical technologies for treating and transporting wounded soldiers on the battlefield. Noting that the word ambulance has been used to refer to both a mobile medical support system and a mode of transport, Haller takes readers back to the origins of the modern ambulance, covering their evolution in depth from the late eighteenth century through World War I. The rising nationalism, economic and imperial competition, and military alliances and arms races of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries figure prominently in this history of the military ambulance, which focuses mainly on British and American technological advancements. Beginning with changes introduced by Dominique-Jean Larrey during the Napoleonic Wars, the book traces the organizational and technological challenges faced by opposing armies in the Crimean War, the American Civil War, the Franco-Prussian War, and the Philippines Insurrection, then climaxes with the trench warfare that defined World War I. The operative word is "challenges" of medical care and evacuation because while some things learned in a conflict are carried into the next, too often, the spasms of war force its participants to repeat the errors of the past before acquiring much needed insight. More than a history of medical evacuation systems and vehicles, this exhaustively researched and richly illustrated volume tells a fascinating story, giving readers a unique perspective of the changing nature of warfare in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

A U.S. Army Medical Base in World War I France by Peter Wever Pdf

Nothing in the small village of Bazoilles-sur-Meuse in the northeast of France bears witness today to the 13,000-bed Bazoilles Hospital Center located there during World War I. Yet in 1918-1919 more than 63,000 American soldiers received treatment there--three out of every 100 U.S. servicemen and women who served in Europe. This richly illustrated history describes daily life and medical care at Bazoilles, providing a vivid picture of the conditions for both patients and personnel, along with stories of those who worked there, and those who were treated or died there.
