And this supposition will gain in weight the more we bear in mind, let, that, in the course of time the various ceremonies of gods and heroes strongly tended to intermingle 2nd, that Athene and Theseus became more and more closely associated as the patrons of Attica, and that they both have an especial share in the constitution of the Panathenaic festival; and 3rd, that after the Persian war the chief power of the Athenians consisted in their maritime force, a suggestion of which they would naturally tend to introduce in connexion with their patron deity. Three months before his death, is a monu ment of learning, which bears eloquent testimony to his long and loving study of the Homeric poems. Professor Seymour was not primarily an archaeologist, but his grasp of the scientific, as well as the administrative prob lems which presented themselves to him as President of the Archaeological Institute was remarkable. His judgment was sure and sane, his knowledge broad, and his comprehension of local questions, and circumstances quick and sympathetic. His death inflicts a great loss upon the Institute. As a man, Professor Seymour was singularly lovable. His manner was far from effusive, and may even have appeared cold to those who knew him only slightly, but those who knew him well felt the true and deep friendliness which lay behind his calm and quiet mien. He had a keen sense of humor, but was never led away by it to say what might pain the feelings of any one. He never forced his advice upon others, but was always ready to give it when requested, and his advice was carefully thought out, kindly expressed, and wise. He had great regard for the Opinions of others, even when he disagreed with them. As a scholar, a teacher, an adviser, and a friend, he will be grievously missed by all with whom he has been associated. At the close of the American Revolution, Charleston, South Carolina, was the wealthiest city in the new nation, with the highest per-capita wealth among whites and the largest number of enslaved residents. Maurie D. McInnis explores the social, political, and material culture of the city to learn how--and at what human cost--Charleston came to be regarded as one of the most refined cities in antebellum America. While other cities embraced a culture of democracy and egalitarianism, wealthy Charlestonians cherished English notions of aristocracy and refinement, defending slavery as a social good and encouraging the growth of southern nationalism. Members of the city's merchant-planter class held tight to the belief that the clothes they wore, the manners they adopted, and the ways they designed house lots and laid out city streets helped secure their place in social hierarchies of class and race. This pursuit of refinement, McInnis demonstrates, was bound up with their determined efforts to control the city's African American majority. She then examines slave dress, mobility, work spaces, and leisure activities to understand how Charleston slaves negotiated their lives among the whites they served. The textures of lives lived in houses, yards, streets, and public spaces come into dramatic focus in this lavishly illustrated portrait of antebellum Charleston. McInnis's innovative history of the city combines the aspirations of its would-be nobility, the labors of the African slaves who built and tended the town, and the ambitions of its architects, painters, writers, and civic promoters.
