The Sociology of Mennonites, Hutterites and Amish by Donovan E. Smucker Pdf

This book is a companion to SmuckerOCOs 1977 publication The Sociologyof Canadian Mennonites, Hutterites and Amish, which is referred to asVol. 1. While the first volume consisted primarily of citations relatingto Canadian Mennonites, Hutterites, and Amish, the present volume ismuch broader in scope, in that it includes materials from both the U.S.and Canada, as well as from Europe. Vol. 2 is organized only slightly differently from the previous volume. There are four main sections: OC Bibliographies and EncyclopediasOCO;OC MennonitesOCO; OC HutteritesOCO; and OC Amish.OCO Each of the latterthree is further arranged by kind of material: OC Books andPamphletsOCO; OC Graduate ThesesOCO; OC ArticlesOCO (from journals andchapters from books); and OC Unpublished SourcesOCO (cited forMennonites only). Three appendixes appear at the end of the book. A nameindex and a subject index are also included. This handy bibliography lists 400 items (mostly published since 1977, though there are a few justified exceptions). It is important to notethat, while information on Mennonites and the Amish is more readilyavailable, the same on Hutterites is scarce. The 53 items listed will, in combination with the ones in the previous volume, prove very useful. The appendixes, though brief, may assist in further research, but theavailability of the materials mentioned therein is not apparent. Theappendixes do provide a little insight into the present-day status andactivities of these groups. Appendix A summarizes the Mennonite ChurchMember Profile II, which is the result of a current survey that willhelp identify trends in the beliefs of Mennonites today. This survey isexpected to be published in a book. Appendix B lists helpful sources(e.g., major Mennonite and Amish research libraries, bookstores, yearbooks, and handbooks relating to these groups). Appendix C listsspecial collections of Amish material. Only some of the books published in the U.S. before 1977 that weremissing from the earlier volume are included in this one. Several otherbooks may have been deliberately excluded (the authorOCOs criteria forinclusion or exclusion are not clearly stated). Just as in the previousbibliography, the writings of prominent Mennonite sociologists and otherauthors have been cited. Evidently books on sociological, religious, andhistorical aspects were chosen, though some fiction titles have alsobeen included. Some books could have been included but are not. Andthere is no mention of the journals Mennonite Historian or The Journalof Mennonite Studies, both of which are Canadian. The bibliography is mostly in essay form. There is no consistency inthe annotations. Some books and articles are annotated in great detail, while others receive only brief mention. A lot of effort has been putinto the arrangement of the material into subsections (books andpamphlets, etc.) for each group, but the user may well find this systemcumbersome. Since there are not many items, they could all have beenlisted in a single alphabetical sequence under each group. The authorindex is convenient, although a spot-check reveals some errors. Theterms used in the subject index are too broad and vague, and at timesserve no purpose. In publishing this bibliography, which reflects 10 years of research, Smucker has further extended his service to students of Mennonites. Theinformation gathered in this volume, as in the earlier one, is notrestricted to academic/research interest only. A bibliography is awelcome addition to any collection, and an annotated one has a distinctadvantage: it enables readers to choose more easily the books they wishto consult. Despite the inconsistencies prevalent in this book, there is no doubtthat, when used in conjunction with its predecessor, it will become avaluable tool for sociologists, historians, and theologiansOCoin fact, for anyone interested in studying or conducting research on thesefascinating people.a"

Navigating Languages, Literacies and Identities by Vally Lytra,Dinah Volk,Eve Gregory Pdf

Navigating Languages, Literacies and Identities showcases innovative research at the interface of religion and multilingualism, offering an analytical focus on religion in children and adolescents’ everyday lives and experiences. The volume examines the connections between language and literacy practices and social identities associated with religion in a variety of sites of learning and socialization, namely homes, religious education classes, places of worship, and faith-related schools and secular schools. Contributors engage with a diverse set of complex multiethnic and religious communities, and investigate the rich multilingual, multiliterate and multi-scriptal practices associated with religion which children and adolescents engage in with a range of mediators, including siblings, peers, parents, grandparents, religious leaders, and other members of the religious community. The volume is organized into three sections according to context and participants: (1) religious practices at home and across generations, (2) religious education classes and places of worship and (3) bridging home, school and community. The edited book will be a valuable resource for researchers in applied linguistics, linguistic anthropology, socio-linguistics, intercultural communication, and early years, primary and secondary education.

Subject Learning in the Primary Curriculum by Jill Bourne,Mary Briggs,Patricia Murphy,Michelle Selinger Pdf

The emphasis on subject knowledge in primary curricula is a world-wide phenomenon and has become increasingly the focus of attention in England, with the introduction of the National Curriculum and the appointment of subject co-ordinators in schools. Yet what exactly constitutes a subject and its practice remains controversial. The book is organised into five parts. Part one examines the general aims of primary education, in order to give a background for a more detailed exploration of UK curriculum development. Parts two, three and four examine the core subjects of English, science and mathematics, whilst constantly bearing in mind the full range of views about the purpose of education and the nature of knowledge. Part five introduces key debates about approaches to knowledge, and raises issues about the future organisation of the curriculum. Subject Learning in the Primary Curriculum is the OU reader for Module 832, Teaching and Learning in the Primary Core Curriculum in the MA in Education.

Advocacy Research in Literacy Education by Meredith Rogers Cherland,Helen Harper Pdf

This book reviews what the authors term advocacy research in literacy education-research that explicitly addresses issues of social justice, equity, and democracy with the distinct purpose of social transformation. It surveys what educational researchers who are working for social justice have accomplished, describes current challenges, and outlines future possibilities. The first section maps the terrain of advocacy research in literacy education. The authors group this large and expanding body of research into four categories: Critical Literacy(ies); Radical Counternarratives in Literacy Research; Literacy as Social Practice; and Linguistic Studies. Each chapter describes the research area, traces its history, provides example studies, and assesses the contributions of research to advocacy work now and potentially in the future. The second section provides a deeper consideration of challenges to the field of advocacy research and suggests future directions for research and scholarship; this section reflects the need to complicate and trouble the terms and relations between and among social justice, ethics, democracy, freedom, and literacy. As a whole, this book is a response to the current popular understandings of literacy education that limit the efficacy of advocacy work in these troubled times-understandings that support the proliferation of standardized testing, teacher testing, and scripted lessons and programs, along with the privileging of particular forms of research. Intended for those who work or soon will work in literacy education-students, teacher educators, researchers, and practitioners-this book represents the authors' belief that it is time for advocacy workers to strengthen and intensify their efforts to promote the most principled, effective literacy education for democratic life. It is their hope that this book will contribute to such an effort.

Functional Literacy by Ludo Th Verhoeven Pdf

The purpose of the volume is to open up new perspectives in the study of literacy by bringing together current research findings from linguistics, psychology, sociology and anthropology. The book divides into five parts. The first part deals with theoretical questions related to the definition and the modeling of the construct of functional literacy. The second part goes into the notion of literacy development. Both societal and individual aspects of literacy development are taken into account. In the next two parts the actual achievement of literacy in various regions of the world is dealt with. In part 3 the focus is on attaining literacy in developing societies, and in part 4 on attaining literacy in industrialized societies. In the final part the question is raised how functional literacy can be promoted through education. Starting from a cross-cultural perspective the central issue is how standards of functional literacy can be established throughout the world.

Why the Amish Sing by D. Rose Elder Pdf

An intimate portrait of the diverse music-making at the center of Amish faith and life. Singing occurs in nearly every setting of Amish life. It is a sanctioned pleasure that frames all Amish rituals and one that enlivens and sanctifies both routine and special events, from household chores, road trips by buggy, and family prayer to baptisms, youth group gatherings, weddings, and “single girl” sings. But because Amish worship is performed in private homes instead of public churches, few outsiders get the chance to hear Amish people sing. Amish music also remains largely unexplored in the field of ethnomusicology. In Why the Amish Sing, D. Rose Elder introduces readers to the ways that Amish music both reinforces and advances spiritual life, delving deep into the Ausbund, the oldest hymnal in continuous use. This illuminating ethnomusicological study demonstrates how Amish groups in Wayne and Holmes Counties, Ohio—the largest concentration of Amish in the world—sing to praise God and, at the same time, remind themselves of their 450-year history of devotion. Singing instructs Amish children in community ways and unites the group through common participation. As they sing in unison to the weighty words of their ancestors, the Amish confirm their love and support for the community. Their singing delineates their common journey—a journey that demands separation from the world and yielding to God's will. By making school visits, attending worship services and youth sings, and visiting private homes, Elder has been given the rare opportunity to listen to Amish singing in its natural social and familial context. She combines one-on-one interviews with detailed observations of how song provides a window into Amish cultural beliefs, values, and norms.
