Borderline Shine by Connie Greshner Pdf

A therapist's story of complex trauma and her remarkable journey to recovery. When Connie Greshner was eight years old, her father walked into a bar in Ponoka, Alberta, and shot her mother. So began a young life defined by trauma. From Catholic boarding school in Kansas to the streets of the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver, Connie travelled in pursuit of acceptance and belonging. Grief, confusion, and shame manifested as depression, addiction, and promiscuity. Branded chronically suicidal with no hope of recovery by the mental health system, Connie was determined to heal herself and help others. Supported and inspired by exceptional friends, a love of books, and a connection to nature, she finally found her home, purpose, and peace. In Borderline Shine, Connie breaks the silence and shame of intergenerational violence. With unflinching honesty she chronicles her unique journey through the darkness of suffering to the light of compassion, hope, and recovery.

Red Deer by Hugh Alexander MacPherson Pdf

Excerpt from Red Deer: Natural History; Deer-Stalking; Stag-Hunting; Cookery Books on Natural History cover such a vast number of subjects that their writers necessarily find it impossible to deal with each in a really comprehensive manner; and it is not within the scope of such works exhaustively to discuss the animals described, in the light of objects of sport. Books on sport, again, seldom treat at length of the Natural History of the furred and feathered creatures which are shot or otherwise taken and, so far as the Editor is aware, in no book hitherto published on Natural History or Sport has information been given as to the best methods of turning the contents of the bag to account. Red Deer by T. H. Clutton-Brock,F. E. Guinness,S. D. Albon Pdf

Red Deer: Behavior and Ecology of Two Sexes is the most extensive study yet available of reproduction in wild vertebrate. The authors synthesize data collected over ten years on a population of individually recognizable red deer, usually regarded as conspecific with the American elk. Their results reveal the extent of sex differences in behavior, reproduction, and ecology and make a substantial contribution to our understanding of sexual selection.

A Special Hell by Claudia Malacrida Pdf

Using rare interviews with former inmates and workers, institutional documentation, and governmental archives, Claudia Malacrida illuminates the dark history of the treatment of “mentally defective” children and adults in twentieth-century Alberta. Focusing on the Michener Centre in Red Deer, one of the last such facilities operating in Canada, A Special Hell is a sobering account of the connection between institutionalization and eugenics. Malacrida explains how isolating the Michener Centre’s residents from their communities served as a form of passive eugenics that complemented the active eugenics program of the Alberta Eugenics Board. Instead of receiving an education, inmates worked for little or no pay – sometimes in homes and businesses in Red Deer – under the guise of vocational rehabilitation. The success of this model resulted in huge institutional growth, chronic crowding, and terrible living conditions that included both routine and extraordinary abuse. Combining the powerful testimony of survivors with a detailed analysis of the institutional impulses at work at the Michener Centre, A Special Hell is essential reading for those interested in the disturbing past and troubling future of the institutional treatment of people with disabilities.

The Reindeer Hunters by Joan Wolf Pdf

For generations, as dawn touched the River of Gold and light hit the fertile valleys of southern France, the young men of the Kindred and the Norakamo tribes raided each other’s horse herds. But when a full-blown war threatened both tribes’ very existence, a taboo-breaking alliance was forged to survive this common enemy. To seal it, Alane, the Norakamo chief’s daughter, was promised in marriage to Nardo, the Kindred chief’s son. Though they worship the same god, their ways are very different—especially for the proud and beautiful Alane, who fights against her forced union with Nardo. But she soon discovers that she can no longer resist the yearnings of her heart for this extraordinary man. And now Alane and Nardo must struggle to rally their people to defend their lands as they, too, must confront their own intense conflicts, ambitions and desires. For if their marriage cannot last, neither will their tribes…

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ...a bullock, and makes no nest as a fox will, turning round and round till the grasses are fitted to his body. But as the stag will lie in the same place day after day, there is a depression in the fern or grasses corresponding to his size. When he has settled himself down he is said to be "in harbour," and it is curious that if once a stag has chosen a part of the copse, the next that comes will generally go and lie very near the same spot, though the first stag may have left it weeks. Hot summer weather makes a stag pant, and it is often possible to hear him blowing and knocking the flies off in the heat of the day. Two or three times in the day he gets up, goes a little way, and returns. Sometimes he goes down to drink, but always comes back to his "bed." Those stags that frequent the hills in the height of the summer often choose places where the wind draws through a scanty plantation of trees near the ridge of a hill. There are seldom any trees, not even firs or bushes, on the heights of Exmoor. The winter gales are so severe that trees will not grow, though they flourish in the coombes "under the wind," and up to the very line of the wind. Stags seem in summer to like the draught of air under trees, and indeed are hot by nature, and always glad to cool themselves, as in water. The day being over, the stag at dusk comes out again to feed. Now the work of the "harbourer" is to find where a runnable stag is in "harbour" on the morning of the meet, that is, in what particular copse or part of a wood a stag has gone to lie for the day, and where the hounds will find him. It must be a runnable stag, or warrantable, a term in its strict meaning indicating a stag of five years, with not less...
