An Abridgment of Wall's History of Infant Baptism (Classic Reprint) by William Henry Spencer Pdf

Excerpt from An Abridgment of Wall's History of Infant Baptism The commission given by our Saviour, in the time of His mortal life, to baptize in the country of Judea, is not at all set down in Holy Scripture, - only it is said they baptized (John iii. 22 - 26; iv. 1, 2). And the repetition of the commission, in Matt, xxviii. 19, is conveyed in general terms, and gives no directions with respect to either the age or manner of baptism. It does not command infant baptism, but it does not forbid it; it defines neither at what age a person is qualified to receive this sacrament, nor the manner in which it is to be administered. Among the persons baptized by the Apostles, there is no express mention of infant baptism; nor is there, on the other hand, any mention of a Christian child's baptism being deferred till adult age. Excerpt from The History of Infant-Baptism, Vol. 1 of 4: Together With Mr. Gale's Reflections, and Dr. Wall's Defence It has been handed down to us that Dr'. Wall was warmly attached to bishop Atterbury, his diocesan. It appears that he carried on a correspondence with that gifted Prelate, especially concerning the times in which the four Gospels were written. Infant-Baptism by W. J. Mcglothlin Pdf

Excerpt from Infant-Baptism: Historically Considered There have been, among others, two marked ten dencies in the history of Christianity which have been productive of evil. One has been the tendency to over estimate the ceremonial elements, and the other to underestimate them. Because of their strenuous ad herence to immersion as the form prescribed in the New Testament for the ordinance of baptism, Baptists have often been misunderstood as champions of the cere monial a-s contrasted with the spiritual elements of the gospel. Nothing could be farther from the truth than this estimate of Baptists. They have indeed expended much effort in maintaining the two ordinances of the New Testament church. But their aim has been always to preserve the spirituality of the gospel, not to lose sight of it in the advocacy of forms and ceremonies. The amount of time and thought expended upon the latter has been no greater than the tendency to over estimate them or pervert their meaning on the part of others. Infant Baptism by James Lumsden Pdf

Excerpt from Infant Baptism: Its Nature and Objects The commonly received doctrine of the Reformed Churches, as to the nature and object of baptism, is concisely and comprehensively stated in our Shorter Catechism Baptism is a sacrament wherein the washing with water in the name of the Father, and Of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, doth signify and seal our ingrafting into Christ, and partaking of the benefits of the covenant of grace, and our engage ment to be the Lord's. This definition, put into the mouth of a believer, is evidently intended to include infant baptism; and we will best attain the end of our present investigation, by examining the place which is here assigned to it, by inquiring to what extent, or in what sense, the representation here given of this ordinance as a Sign and seal harmonises with the view which Scripture warrants us to take of baptism as administered to infants.
