Not illustrated. 1740 edition. Excerpt: ... i.TITE have gain'd a most wonderful Point VV in the foregoing Chapter, bis qtrx ving the Dinstin&ion between things Above end things Contrary to Reason, and such as of it felt alone is sufficient Not only immediately to decide, but even for ever to Silence the Controversy between us and our Swims Adversaries concerning the Belief of things. above Reason. For the gofy Objection that is or can possibly bepretendedagainst the Belief of things above Reason being the supposed Contrariety of the sameihings to Reason, if it be shewn that to be above Reason involves no such 'Contrariety, then the Objection against the beireFof such things is fairly and wholly removed, and. consequently there remains no Reason why they may not be Believed. So that I cannot but look upon the Substance of my Work as most effectually done already, and those of our Adversaries that have any reasonable Measure of Penetration and Sincerity must needs be sensible of.it. And I dare appeal even to their own Consciences whether they are not. However consider ing ing the importunity of those I have to deal with, as well as the weight of the Cause it self, I shall endeavour the further establishment of it upon some other Considerations, whereby I shall also give further Confirmation, and so repay what i am indebted to the Point contended for in the preceding Chapter, since we may as well argue backwards from the Believableness of things above Reason to their not Contrariety, as forwards from their not Contrariety to their Believableness, the Consequence being full as good, thus, Above Reason Believable, therefore not Contrary, as thus, Above Reason not Contrary, therefore Believable. Now in order to the fuller Conviction and Demonstration of the Believableness of things...

Faith and the Mystery of God by Maurice Wiles Pdf

This book is a lucid examination of the relation between faith and reason in light of the varied forms assumed by Christianity in the past as well as in the present. The backdrop for the examination is change--change in theology, church life, and society itself--and the purpose of the examination is to recall the Christian community to its true function as a unifying force in the world. In an effort to enlighten our future, Wiles shows how the concept of God as Spirit points toward a way of understanding God that does substantial justice both to the main insights of traditional faith and to the critical challenges of contemporary reflection. Faith and the Mystery of God delineates an intimately personal view of Christian faith along with grounds for holding it. Thus it is intended to help people affirm their belief in God in the modern world--in the face of all odds.

The Mysteries of Christianity by Matthias Joseph Scheeben Pdf

The Mysteries of Christianity is Matthias Joseph Scheeben’s youthful magnum opus, a logically rigorous and spiritually profound dogmatic theology. In its pages, he explores the intelligibility of Christianity’s supernatural mysteries and their deep connectedness, ultimately demonstrating that Christian theology constitutes a science before the court of human reason, even as its object transcends human comprehension. Scheeben’s task is to present a unified view of the whole panorama of revealed truth, and he pursues this by considering nine key Christian mysteries: the Trinity, creation, sin, the Incarnation, the Eucharist, the Church and its sacraments, justification, eschatological glory, and predestination. Since the mystery of the Trinity is the root of the supernatural order, Scheeben begins here, showing that the foundation of the salvific economy lies in the eternal processions of persons in God—the begetting of the Son and the spiration of the Spirit being in different ways the cause of the life of grace in the human soul. When the Son and the Spirit are sent into the world in the Incarnation and through the bestowal of grace, they provide the way for human beings to see God face-to-face in the beatific vision, the end for which God created humans. Among the means of return to God, Scheeben particularly emphasizes the Eucharist, on account of its close connection with the mystery of the Incarnation. By placing his treatment of the Eucharist before that of the Church, he signals that his is a genuinely Eucharistic ecclesiology, centered on the abiding presence of the incarnate divine Son.
