Marginalized: Indian Poetry in English by Smita Agarwal Pdf

Indian writing in English, especially fiction, continues to capture the attention of readers all over the English-speaking world. Conversely, the strong and flourishing tradition of poetry in English from India has not impacted the contemporary world in the same manner as the fiction. This book creates a debate to highlight the well-grounded and confident tradition of Indian Poetry in English which began almost two hundred years ago with the advent of the British. Individual essays on poets before and since the Indian Independence focus on the poetry of Derozio, Tagore, Aurobindo and Naidu right down to the modern and contemporary poets like Ezekiel, Mahapatra, Ramanujan, Kolatkar, Das, Moraes, Daruwalla, de Souza, Jussawalla and Patel who ushered in a change both in terms of subject matter and style. On either side of the Atlantic, this book which includes a substantial Introduction, Select Bibliography and Index is of value to scholars, teachers and researchers on Indian Poetry in English.

Expressive Form in the Poetry of Kamala Das by Anisur Rahman Pdf

The Poetry Of Kamala Das Is A Sort Of Psychic Striptease. She Explores Her Psychic Geography With An Exceptional Female Energy And The Capability To Express Her Inimitable Vision Through The Technique Of Sincerity. The Quest For An Emotional Liaison And Her Failure To Establish One Is The Central Burden Of Her Poetry. From The Thematic Standpoint Her Poetry Originates From A Dark End And Performs, In Turn, A Curative Function. The Limited Range Of Her Experience May Account For Her Thematic Staisis But It Turns Out To Be Too Marginal A Point If We Consider The Fire Of Her Creativity. Her Typical Feminine Sensibility And The Confessional Mode Have Been Explored Through Her Obsessive Images, Symbols And The Frank Disarming Manner. With Her Insistence On Self, On Approaching Love With Love And Her Crying When Jilted In It, She Creates The Type Of Poetic Form Which May Adequately Be Called Expressive . In Her Urge To Take A Flight In A Different World And Give A Full Throated Expression To Her Indigenous Self She Projects Her Distinct Individuality. Kamala Das Composes The Raga Of Self In Her Poetry, A Symphony Of The Discordant Notes Of Life.

Indian Love Poems by Meena Alexander Pdf

According to the Kama Sutra, the erotic handbook written two thousand years ago, when the wheel of ecstasy is in motion “there is no textbook at all, and no order.” Indian Love Poems is a unique gathering of poems from across more than two and a half millennia that attempts to catalog the disordered ecstasies of love, ranging from the Kama Sutra and earlier works up to present-day India and the poets of the Indian diaspora. Indian Love Poems features works from the classical languages of Sanskrit and Tamil and such later languages as Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam, Bengali, and English. Emerging from many Indian cultures and eras, the poems collected here reflect a variety of erotic and spiritual passions, and celebrate the powerful role of desire–both male and female–in the intricate dance of existence. From the twelfth-century female poet Mahadeviyakka to the twentieth-century Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore to such contemporary poets as Kamala Das and Vikram Seth, this glittering tapestry of lyric voices beautifully and sensually evokes the transfiguring force of love.

Erotic Love Poems from India by Anonim Pdf

The poets of classical India regarded love as the first and deepest of passions. Translator and scholar Andrew Schelling perfectly encapsulates the history and passion of eighth-century India in this collection. “A single stanza of the poet Amaru,” declared a ninth-century poetry critic, “may provide the taste of love equal to what’s found in whole volumes.” Graceful and yet remarkably playful, intensely passionate, and at times hinting of divine transcendence, the poems translated here offer poignant glimpses into the many faces of erotic love. This collection, known in Sanskrit as the Amarushataka (“One Hundred Poems of Amaru”), was compiled in the eighth century and remains to this day one of India’s finest collections of love poetry. Legend connects the poetry’s authorship to King Amaru of Kashmir, while present-day scholars generally consider it an anthology of the verses of many poets.

Erotic Love Poems from India by Amaru Pdf

"A single stanza of the poet Amaru," declared a ninth-century poetry critic, "may provide the taste of love equal to what's found in whole volumes." Graceful and yet remarkably playful, intensely passionate, and at times hinting of divine transcendence, the poems translated here offer poignant glimpses into the many faces of erotic love. This collection, known in Sanskrit as the Amarushataka ("One Hundred Poems of Amaru"), was compiled in the eighth century and remains to this day one of India's finest collections of love poetry. It has never been fully translated into English poetry before. Legend connects the poetry's authorship to King Amaru of Kashmir, while present-day scholars generally consider it an anthology of the verses of many poets. Poet and translator Andrew Schelling's artful translations render the ancient verses with freshness and immediacy. Schelling's compelling introduction and afterword offer musings on the colorful background and history of the original Sanskrit text.

Tamil Love Poetry by Martha Ann Selby Pdf

Dating from the early decades of the third century C.E., the Ainkurunuru is believed to be the earliest anthology of classical Tamil love poetry and known to be a work of enduring importance. Commissioned by a Cera-dynasty king and composed by five masterful poets, the anthology renders the five landscapes of reciprocal love distinctive to the genre: jealous quarreling, anxious waiting and lamentation, clandestine love before marriage, elopement and love in separation, and patient waiting after marriage. Despite its centrality to literary and intellectual traditions, the Ainkurunur.

The Broadview Anthology of Poetry - Second Edition by Amanda Goldrick-Jones,Herbert Rosengarten Pdf

Among the poets new to this edition are such leading names as Americans Robert Pinsky, Louise Erdrich and Louise Glück; Britons James Fenton and Carol Ann Duffy; and Canadians Anne Carson, Robert Bringhurst, and Christian Bök. A number of names who may be new to many readers of poetry are also included among them: Ohioan Debra Allbery, Vancouverite Elise Partridge, and the Cree poet Connie Fife; as with the first edition, the editors have endeavored to include much that is fresh as well as much that is familiar. There are many additions to the selections from poets who appeared in the first edition including selections from the recent work of Leonard Cohen, Les Murray, and Margaret Atwood. As before, the anthology includes work from English-language poets throughout the world from India, Africa, and the Caribbean as well as from Britain, North America, and Australia. Although the selections from the work of poets of earlier eras are largely unchanged from the first edition, there have been some changes; among poems added for this edition are Milton’s L’Allegro and Il Penseroso, Bradstreet’s “Employment,” Dickinson’s “I cannot live without You,” Frost’s “Once by the Pacific,” and Auden’s “Funeral Blues.” As before, the text emphasizes work of the past century; poems from 1900 or later take up more than half of the anthology’s pages. In its first edition The Broadview Anthology of Poetry included biographical information about the poets at the back of the anthology; for the new edition, biographical material appears in a headnote to each poet. Two other features are also new to this edition: the date of first publication is appended after each poem, and line numbering is used throughout. The numbers have been kept unobtrusive, however; as with the first edition, the designers have endeavored to give a clean look to the pages of the anthology. A substantial section on prosody, figures of speech, and so on is included as an appendix.
