An Anthology of Structural Morphology by Rene Motro Pdf

The structural morphology working group of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures, founded in 1991, has helped to launch several international seminars, newsletters and specific sessions of international conferences devoted to structural morphology. This book contains papers that have been selected either for their fundamental contribution to structural morphology or for their actual pertinence in the field. Polyhedral geometry, double-curved surfaces, biological structures, foldable systems, form-finding techniques, and free form design are some of the topics included in the contents of this book. The work presented in this book is the result of more than 15 years of study by researchers, engineers, mathematicians, and architects, who thought that conceptual design would benefit from the association of separate fields (geometry, biology, and mechanics) in a holistic process. Every aspect of structural morphology is illustrated by one or more chapters of the book. As far as we know, there are few books OCo perhaps none OCo that gather all aspects of structural morphology, even if, for instance, there are many books on the geometry of polyhedra. Furthermore, readers will have access to a large list of selected references, which will open the scope of their bibliography. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: The First 13 Years of Structural Morphology Group OCo A Personal View (2,623 KB). Contents: The First 13 Years of Structural Morphology Group OCo A Personal View (T Wester); An Approach to Structural Morphology (R Motro); The Structural Morphology of Curved Diaphragms OCo Or the Structural Behavior of Floral Polyhedra (T Wester); Polyhedroids (P Huybers); Novational Transformations (H Nooshin et al.); Some Structural-Morphological Aspects of Deployable Structures for Space Enclosures (A Hanaor); Phantasy in Space: On Human Feeling Between the Shapes of the World and How to Look on Natural Structures (M Balz); An Expandable Dodecahedron (K Flriin & T Tabor); Examples of Geometrical Reverse Engineering: Designing from Models and/or Under Geometrical Constraints (K Linkwitz); Crystalline Architecture (A L Loeb); Flat Grids Designs Employing the Swivel Diaphragm (C Rodriguez et al.); Form Optimizing in Biological Structures OCo The Morphology of Sea Shells (E Stach); Expandable OCyBlobOCO Structures (F Jensen & S Pellegrino). Michael Balz by John Chilton Pdf

This book presents a review of the work of the architect Michael Balz, pioneer of concrete-shell architecture. It discusses his projects, both realized and unbuilt, many being designed in collaboration with the renowned Swiss engineer Heinz Isler. Profusely illustrated with original drawings and photographs, Michael Balz: Shells and Visions caters to the increasing interest in the design and construction of free-form reinforced concrete shells consequent on the advent of 3D modelling and form-finding software. The book describes architectural designs and practical construction issues to motivate contemporary shell designers. Balz’s experience of dealing with such difficulties as incompatibility with non-structural features and the insertion of windows into shells, and the assessment of buildings’ long-term performance allow readers to learn more easily how to cope with such issues in their own work. The book introduces Michael Balz, his early work with other architects, including his work on pneumatic forms with Frei Otto, and his evolution into an exponent of organic architecture. It then discusses completed projects, including the outdoor Theater unter den Kuppeln (1976), Ballettsaal (1979) and Balz House (1981). Competitions Balz entered and unrealized shell projects also receive attention, as does his work on the urban scale, highlighting conceptual designs of mega-cities. His visionary megastructures encourage the exploration of innovative solutions for city spaces by architects faced with today’s increased urbanization. Michael Balz: Shells and Visions will be of interest to students and professionals in the fields of architecture, structural engineering, building and urban design. It’s reflections on the cultural and contextual aspects of Balz’s work will help the architectural historian to appreciate its long-term significance.

Divided Spheres by Edward S. Popko,Christopher J. Kitrick Pdf

Praise for the previous edition [. . .] Dr. Popko’s elegant new book extends both the science and the art of spherical modeling to include Computer-Aided Design and applications, which I would never have imagined when I started down this fascinating and rewarding path. His lovely illustrations bring the subject to life for all readers, including those who are not drawn to the mathematics. This book demonstrates the scope, beauty, and utility of an art and science with roots in antiquity. [. . .] Anyone with an interest in the geometry of spheres, whether a professional engineer, an architect or product designer, a student, a teacher, or simply someone curious about the spectrum of topics to be found in this book, will find it helpful and rewarding. – Magnus Wenninger, Benedictine Monk and Polyhedral Modeler Ed Popko's comprehensive survey of the history, literature, geometric, and mathematical properties of the sphere is the definitive work on the subject. His masterful and thorough investigation of every aspect is covered with sensitivity and intelligence. This book should be in the library of anyone interested in the orderly subdivision of the sphere. – Shoji Sadao, Architect, Cartographer and lifelong business partner of Buckminster Fuller Edward Popko's Divided Spheres is a "thesaurus" must to those whose academic interest in the world of geometry looks to greater coverage of synonyms and antonyms of this beautiful shape we call a sphere. The late Buckminster Fuller might well place this manuscript as an all-reference for illumination to one of nature's most perfect inventions. – Thomas T. K. Zung, Senior Partner, Buckminster Fuller, Sadao, & Zung Architects. This first edition of this well-illustrated book presented a thorough introduction to the mathematics of Buckminster Fuller’s invention of the geodesic dome, which paved the way for a flood of practical applications as diverse as weather forecasting and fish farms. The author explained the principles of spherical design and the three classic methods of subdivision based on geometric solids (polyhedra). This thoroughly edited new edition does all that, while also introducing new techniques that extend the class concept by relaxing the triangulation constraint to develop two new forms of optimized hexagonal tessellations. The objective is to generate spherical grids where all edge (or arc) lengths or overlap ratios are equal. New to the Second Edition New Foreword by Joseph Clinton, lifelong Buckminster Fuller collaborator A new chapter by Chris Kitrick on the mathematical techniques for developing optimal single-edge hexagonal tessellations, of varying density, with the smallest edge possible for a particular topology, suggesting ways of comparing their levels of optimization An expanded history of the evolution of spherical subdivision New applications of spherical design in science, product design, architecture, and entertainment New geodesic algorithms for grid optimization New full-color spherical illustrations created using DisplaySphere to aid readers in visualizing and comparing the various tessellations presented in the book Updated Bibliography with references to the most recent advancements in spherical subdivision methods

Word and Paradigm Morphology by James P. Blevins Pdf

This volume provides an introduction to word and paradigm models of morphology and the general perspectives on linguistic morphology that they embody. The recent revitalization of these models is placed in the larger context of the intellectual lineage that extends from classical grammars to current information-theoretic and discriminative learning paradigms. The synthesis of this tradition outlined in the volume highlights leading ideas about the organization of morphological systems that are shared by word and paradigm approaches, along with strategies that have been developed to formalize these ideas, and ways in which the ideas have been validated by experimental methodologies. An extended comparison of contemporary word and paradigm variants isolates the central assumptions about morphological units and relations that distinguish implicational from realizational models and clarifies the relation of these models to morpheme-based accounts. Designed to be accessible to a wide readership, this book will serve both as an introduction to morphology and morphological theory from the word and paradigm perspective for non-specialists, and for morphologists, as a detailed account of the history of the ideas that underlie these models.

Structural and Morphological Evolution in Metal-Organic Films and Multilayers by ALOKMAY. MUKHERJEE DATTA (SMITA.),Smita Mukherjee Pdf

Structural and Morphological Evolution in Metal-Organic Films and Multilayers presents major results of the authors' work carried out on Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers. The authors address two important questions: Are metal-organic monolayer systems more like solids or more like liquids? Does a two-dimensional system have different kind of bonds than a bulk or three-dimensional body? The book reveals the richness hidden in these supposedly well-known systems, including saturated, aliphatic fatty acids. It examines the mechanisms behind the growth of monolayers and multilayers of the molecules primarily from a physicist's point of view. The authors highlight the relationship between molecular structure and domain structure as well as the various physical properties. The book also explores the interplay between physics and chemistry in metal ions.
