An Atheist's Guide To God is written, with dry humour, for real people, not arcane theologians with stratospheric IQs who could demolish me in debate but not explain themselves to Einstein's child of six. And as I am an Englishman it inevitably concentrates on the Christian idea of god. I barely attack god in this book but raise many questions about religions, their clergy, theology and holy books. Why should he, she or it, existing or otherwise, be criticised for the sins of his clergy, unless for failing to bring them to heel? Besides, as an old Fleet Street hack I raise mostly rhetorical questions about god or gods and leave you to infer the answers. I treat the Bible and other holy texts as plain reading, what they actually say, as divines can make them mean anything - and do. Researching this book taught me how easy it is for theologians to become beguiled into writing weighty tomes on lightweight matters which would better be answered by a single sentence, sometimes a single plural word. I have tried to resist that temptation. The Bible is a tad prudish. It uses the words 'slave' or 'slavery' but usually prefers 'bondsman' or 'bondsmaid' which can mean either slave or indentured servant, to be divined from context. It is also coy about sex. 'Fornicate' appears occasionally in the Bible but 'he knew her' or 'Uncovering' or 'seeing his or her nakedness' are preferred evasions. Sodomy is sometimes used but, again, euphemisms are preferred: 'homosexuality' is a nineteenth-century neologism and, worse, it is a Greek/Latin hybrid. Nor is 'rape' used but 'ravish' or, "He being stronger than she, forced her and lay with her" Song of Solomon 4:1. Women in ancient times were treated as mere chattels, the property of their fathers or husbands. Don't blame me for the political incorrectness of life in those days. I use faith to mean views that are invulnerable to all evidence, disproof and reason while belief is views that evidence and reason might change - but seldom do. In writing this book a constant sub-theme emerged: if you take holy books as guides then a serious discussion can ensue, if you take them literally it cannot. Literalism, I suggest, is an untenable idea. I could have used the phrase "If you accept the Bible literally" hundreds of times but that would have been boring for both you and me. Similarly, with "God declined to get involved". With both please infer from context. "The Church" means the Roman Catholic Church, dominating Christianity for over 1,000 years (the Dark Ages) unless clearly intended otherwise. Bible quotations are from American websites of the King James Authorised Version of the Bible. Translations are, of course, a semantic quagmire so I simply go with the words of the King James Authorised version whose text is as scripturally accurate or inaccurate as other versions but in far more beautiful English. I note single-issue campaigners, such as eco-warriors, try to persuade themselves, if few others, to interpret holy books as supporting their causes. Atheism also embraces freethinkers, agnostics and humanists: some people claim to be all four. It is a law of criticism that if you can't disparage the facts in a book then criticise the tone.
