An Experimental Treatise on Optics by John Farrar,Professor John Farrar, PH D M F B S F Pdf

Excerpt from An Experimental Treatise on Optics: Comprehending the Leading Principles of the Science, and an Explanation of the More Important and Curious Optical Instruments and Optical Phenomena; Being the Third Part of a Course of Natural Philosophy He first examined, as also Dr Brewster did, the effects of certain coloured glasses in almost obliterating certain coloured spaces in the spectrum, whilst others were transmitted in all their brilliancy. This fact was noticed by Dr Young. Mr Herschel, in applying to the examination of it the uncommon powers of his analytical skill, has resolved the phenomena into their most general expression, and thus traced the causes of many interesting consequences which otherwise would not have been deduced. A Short Elementary Treatise on Experimental and Mathematical Optics (Classic Reprint) by Rev. Baden Powell Pdf

Excerpt from A Short Elementary Treatise on Experimental and Mathematical Optics In the present instance, the author's object is to facili tate the study of Elementary Optics, with immediate refer ence to the wants of the student, circumstanced as he at present is in the University of Oxford. To this particular case none of the existing treatises appear completely adapted; and though such is the discouragement under which physical studies labour in this place, that the mere character of the treatises produced on these branches, can, perhaps, very little affect their actual progress; yet that no obstacle may remain which is capable of being removed, he considers it worth while to try to remedy the complaints against existing works, whether as too large and too difficult on the one hand, or as incomplete and obscure on the other. Simple Experiments in Optics by Roshan L. Aggarwal,Kambiz Alavi Pdf

This book compiles over 40 experiments in optics which will be of interest to university, college, and high school students, as well as practicing engineers. These experiments deal with lenses, mirrors, gratings, polarizers, optical windows, optical filters, beam splitters, light sources, and light detectors. Each experiment is clearly described, and concise, easy-to-understand theory is provided to explain the principles underlying them. Appendices provide photos, schematics, specifications, and relevant spectral plots of the optical components, as well as optomechanical components.

Physical Optics by Richard Potter Pdf

Excerpt from Physical Optics: Or the Nature and Properties of Light, a Descriptive and Experiment Treatise The author, on commencing an experimental study of Physical Optics more than a quarter of a century ago, found a want of experimental guidance in the treatises upon the subject, and this want has not yet been supplied. It is true that experimental results have been described, but not with the experimental detail which the student needs, in order to abridge his labour and facilitate his progress. Like other physical sciences, its development rests almost entirely upon the application of mathematical analysis, and accordingly the discussions of the original investigators are frequently too mathematical for general readers. Though the author, from the commencement of his experiments, had an adequate store of mathematical knowledge for application to his own researches, and to follow the researches of others, yet he has continually seen that the introduction of mathematical formulae into treatises upon Physical Optics must restrict the study of the science to a smaller class than was desirable; for many of the most expert experimenters have only slender acquirements in mathematical analysis. It has been the author's object to supply the want of a descriptive, experimental, and popular treatise on Physical Optics, and to point out the bearing of the different results upon the nature and properties of Light. Opticks or a Treatise of the Reflections, Refracections, and Colours of Light by Sir Isaac Newton Pdf

Part of the ensuing Discourse about Light was written at the Desire of some Gentlemen of the Royal-Society, in the Year 1675, and then sent to their Secretary, and read at their Meetings, and the rest was added about twelve Years after to complete the Theory; except the third Book, and the last Proposition of the Second, which were since put together out of scatter'd Papers. To avoid being engaged in Disputes about these Matters, I have hitherto delayed the printing, and should still have delayed it, had not the Importunity of Friends prevailed upon me. If any other Papers writ on this Subject are got out of my Hands they are imperfect, and were perhaps written before I had tried all the Experiments here set down, and fully satisfied my self about the Laws of Refractions and Composition of Colours. I have here publish'd what I think proper to come abroad, wishing that it may not be translated into another Language without my Consent. The Crowns of Colours, which sometimes appear about the Sun and Moon, I have endeavoured to give an Account of; but for want of sufficient Observations leave that Matter to be farther examined. The Subject of the Third Book I have also left imperfect, not having tried all the Experiments which I intended when I was about these Matters, nor repeated some of those which I did try, until I had satisfied my self about all their Circumstances. To communicate what I have tried, and leave the rest to others for farther Enquiry, is all my Design in publishing these Papers. In a Letter written to Mr. Leibnitz in the year 1679, and published by Dr. Wallis, I mention'd a Method by which I had found some general Theorems about squaring Curvilinear Figures, or comparing them with the Conic Sections, or other the simplest Figures with which they may be compared.
