Espionage in the Ancient World by R.M. Sheldon Pdf

Intelligence activities have always been an integral part of statecraft. Ancient governments, like modern ones, realized that to keep their borders safe, control their populations, and keep abreast of political developments abroad, they needed a means to collect the intelligence which enabled them to make informed decisions. Today we are well aware of the damage spies can do. Here, for the first time, is a comprehensive guide to the literature of ancient intelligence. The entries present books and periodical articles in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, and Dutch—with annotations in English. These works address such subjects as intelligence collection and analysis (political and military), counterintelligence, espionage, cryptology (Greek and Latin), tradecraft, covert action, and similar topics (it does not include general battle studies and general discussions of foreign policy). Sections are devoted to general espionage, intelligence related to road building, communication, and tradecraft, intelligence in Greece, during the reign of Alexander the Great and in the Hellenistic Age, in the Roman republic, the Roman empire, the Byzantine empire, the Muslim world, and in Russia, China, India, and Africa. The books can be located in libraries in the United States; in cases where volumes are in one library only, the author indicates where they may be found.

The Spartan Scytale and Developments in Ancient and Modern Cryptography by Martine Diepenbroek Pdf

This book offers a comprehensive review and reassessment of the classical sources describing the cryptographic Spartan device known as the scytale. Challenging the view promoted by modern historians of cryptography which look at the scytale as a simple and impractical 'stick', Diepenbroek argues for the scytale's deserved status as a vehicle for secret communication in the ancient world. By way of comparison, Diepenbroek demonstrates that the cryptographic principles employed in the Spartan scytale show an encryption and coding system that is no less complex than some 20th-century transposition ciphers. The result is that, contrary to the accepted point of view, scytale encryption is as complex and secure as other known ancient ciphers. Drawing on salient comparisons with a selection of modern transposition ciphers (and their historical predecessors), the reader is provided with a detailed overview and analysis of the surviving classical sources that similarly reveal the potential of the scytale as an actual cryptographic and steganographic tool in ancient Sparta in order to illustrate the relative sophistication of the Spartan scytale as a practical device for secret communication. This helps to establish the conceptual basis that the scytale would, in theory, have offered its ancient users a secure method for secret communication over long distances.

Advances in Cryptology – EUROCRYPT '85 by Franz Pichler Pdf

The storage, routing and transmission of information, either in the form of digital data or of analog signals, plays a central role in modern society. To ensure that such information is protected from access by unauthorized persons is an important new challenge. The development of the theory and practical techniques needed to meet this challenge is the goal of current cryptological research. This research is highly varied and multidisciplinary. It is concerned with fundamental problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science as well as with the engineering aspects of complex information systems. Cryptology today ranks among the most active and interesting areas of research in both science and engineering. EUROCRYPT '85 maintained the tradition of the three previous workshops in this series (Paris 1984, Udine 1983, Burg Feuerstein 1982) with its emphasis on recent developments in cryptology, but also made a concerted effort to encompass more traditional topics in cryptology such as shift register theory and system theory. The many papers on these topics in this volume are witness to the success of this effort.

Applied Abstract Algebra by Rudolf Lidl,Günter Pilz Pdf

There is at present a growing body of opinion that in the decades ahead discrete mathematics (that is, "noncontinuous mathematics"), and therefore parts of applicable modern algebra, will be of increasing importance. Cer tainly, one reason for this opinion is the rapid development of computer science, and the use of discrete mathematics as one of its major tools. The purpose of this book is to convey to graduate students or to final-year undergraduate students the fact that the abstract algebra encountered pre viously in a first algebra course can be used in many areas of applied mathematics. It is often the case that students who have studied mathematics go into postgraduate work without any knowledge of the applicability of the structures they have studied in an algebra course. In recent years there have emerged courses and texts on discrete mathe matics and applied algebra. The present text is meant to add to what is available, by focusing on three subject areas. The contents of this book can be described as dealing with the following major themes: Applications of Boolean algebras (Chapters 1 and 2). Applications of finite fields (Chapters 3 to 5). Applications of semigroups (Chapters 6 and 7).

Confessions of an Illuminati, Volume I by Leo Lyon Zagami Pdf

In English for the first time, a guide to the true secret structure of the Illuminati and their invisible network made of various power structures, author Leo Lyon Zagami uses their internal documents and reveals confidential and top-secret events. His book contends that the presence of numerous Illuminati brotherhoods and secret societies—just as those inside the most prestigious U.S. universities such as Yale or Harvard—have always been guides to the occult. From the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO)'s infiltration of Freemasonry to the real Priory of Sion, this book exposes not only the hidden structure of the New World Order and the occult practices but also their connections to the intelligence community and the infamous Ur-Lodges.

A Bibliography on Writing and Written Language by Konrad Ehlich,Florian Coulmas,Gabriele Graefen Pdf

The bibliography offers information on research about writing and written language over the past 50 years. No comprehensive bibliography on this subject has been published since Sattler's (1935) handbook. With a selection of some 27,500 titles it covers the most important literature in all scientific fields relating to writing. Emphasis has been placed on the interdisciplinary organization of the bibliography, creating many points of common interest for literacy experts, educationalists, psychologists, sociologists, linguists, cultural anthropologists, and historians. The bibliography is organized in such a way as to provide the specialist as well as the researcher in neighboring disciplines with access to the relevant literature on writing in a given field. While necessarily selective, it also offers information on more specialized bibliographies. In addition, an overview of norms and standards concerning 'script and writing' will prove very useful for non-professional readers. It is, therefore, also of interest to the generally interested public as a reference work for the humanities.
