Psychiatric Services for Addicted Patients by American Psychiatric Association Pdf

The original task force report, completed in the summer of 1994, reflected the current state of addiction treatment and provided recommendations for improving these services in the future. That monograph is reproduced in this book, which accomplishes the following: * Define psychiatrists' current roles and practices in the treatment of substance-dependent patients in relationship to that of other practitioners, with particular attention to issues such as dual diagnosis, methadone treatment, and detoxification* Develop suggestions for appropriate funding mechanisms for the payment of addicted patients' treatment in the context of managed care and indemnity benefit programs* Examine issues related to the funding of public sector programs, including funding of Department of Veterans Affairs programs, block grant funding of state and city programs, as well as funding of voluntary treatment programs within and outside the criminal justice system. This book is divided into four sections. Chapter 1 reviews the history of American psychiatry's interest in addiction disorders and the development of the current network of addiction treatment services. Chapter 2 is a snapshot of the current addiction treatment system, with a description of the services provided in general medical settings, psychiatric hospitals, freestanding residential facilities, and private practice and other outpatient settings. Chapter 3 explores the economics of the treatment system: the costs of addictive diseases to American society and the costs and sources of support for their treatment. Chapter 4 examines the range of system modifications and resource allocations needed to bring high quality, cost-effective treatment to addicted patients and their families. These needs range from improving data collection and treatment research to increasing community involvement and the application of current research findings.

Addiction and the Captive Will by Cynthia Geppert Pdf

Twenty-first century neuroscience has discovered that in some severe cases, addiction may so constrain human freedom that the will is only able to choose to use substances of abuse. At this advanced stage, substance use has become the primary driver of salience, co-opting and subsuming other moral priorities and human rewards. Scholars have investigated Aristotle's concept of akrasia as an ancient mirror of this understanding and there have been some preliminary discussions of Augustine's concept of the divided will as it bears on addiction. No detailed and comprehensive exploration of the work of Augustine has yet been undertaken as it relates to three contemporary models of addiction: the choice, learning, and brain disease models. Augustine's psychological awareness, his mastery of ancient theological and philosophical thinking, and his enormous and enduring influence on both Catholic and Protestant theology, make him an ideal subject for such research. This incisive book argues that Augustine's doctrine of the captive will offers a theological parallel of each of these contemporary models of addiction.

The Selected Writings of Benjamin Rush by Dagobert D. Runes Pdf

Benjamin Rush was a Founding Father of the United States. He lived in Pennsylvania and was a physician, writer, educator, humanitarian and devout Christian, as well as the founder of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Rush was a signatory of the Declaration of Independence and attended the Continental Congress. Later in life, he became a professor of medical theory and clinical practice at the University of Pennsylvania. Despite having a wide influence on the development of American government, he is not as widely known as many of his American contemporaries. Rush was also an early opponent of slavery and capital punishment. Despite his great contributions to early American society, Rush may be more famous today as the man who, in 1812, helped reconcile the friendship of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams by encouraging the two former Presidents to resume writing to each other. The editor of the preface of this book gives an in-depth look into Benjamin Rush’s life. The writings of Rush, which are contained in this book, show a wide range of interest and knowledge embracing agriculture and the mechanical arts, chemistry and medicine, political science, and theology. Included are letters he wrote in an effort to dispel prejudice, to fight oppression, and to elevate the lot of the lowly.
