An Intertextual Commentary to the Psalter by David Emanuel Pdf

When reading the Psalter, the sequencing of individual psalms is often overlooked or taken for granted, and it is easy to assume that the psalms’ placement results purely from happenstance. The present volume, however, assumes that strategic approaches to juxtaposition, which editors and arrangers apply elsewhere in the Hebrew Bible, were similarly adopted in the arrangement of the Psalter. Furthermore, the Intertextual Commentary illuminates the vast array of biblical texts employed by the psalmists. In addition to the commonly recognized literary tool kit available to biblical poets (parallelism, metaphor, anthropomorphism, chiasmus, etc.), the poets relied heavily on inner-biblical allusion and exegesis to construct their compositions. Primarily adopting a diachronic approach, Emanuel isolates literary sources employed by the psalmists, and further postulates how the psalmists wove specific words and phrases into the fabric of their compositions.

Recalling a Story Once Told by John S. Vassar Pdf

"John Vassar investigates the intertextual relationship between the Psalter and the Pentateuch, revealing the various markers in the Psalter that guide the reader to the Pentateuch. The initial marker discerned guiding the reader from the Psalter to the Pentateuch is the fivefold division of the Psalter. This study then proceeds to examine the relationship between the initial psalm of each book of the Psalter and then explores this relationship with a text from the five books of the Pentateuch."--BOOK JACKET.

The Book of Psalms Through the Lens of Intertextuality by Beth LaNeel Tanner Pdf

Even in an era of expanding methodologies for biblical studies, psalms study seems to be stuck in the old tracks of form criticism. While often beneficial, form criticism excludes two important ways of reading the psalms: that of reading the psalms with the narratives of the Hebrew Scriptures as the historical superscriptions suggest, and that of a feminist reading by expanding an exclusive focus on the cult. This book looks to correct these problems by investigating the psalms via intertextual method, both by seeing the psalms as intertextual - made up of a multitude of other texts - and by reading the psalms intertextually with texts outside the psalms. This book also introduces the reader to the variety of intertextual theories in the literary guild and develops an intertextual hermeneutic of biblical study based on these theories that bridges the gap between literary theory and the practice of biblical interpretation.

Psalms Old and New by Ben Witherington III Pdf

Reading the Book of Psalms in its original context is the crucial prerequisite for reading its citation and use in later interpretation, including the New Testament writings, argues Ben Witherington III. Here he offers pastors, teachers, and students an accessible commentary to the Psalms, as well as a reasoned consideration of how they were heard and read in early Christianity. By reading Òforward and backward,Ó Witherington advances the scholarly discussion of intertextuality and opens a new avenue for biblical theology.

Studies in the Book of Psalms by William Swan Plumer Pdf

The Psalms are wonderful. They have been read, repeated, chanted, sung, studied, wept over, rejoiced in, expounded, loved and praised by God's people for thousands of years. The most ancient of these productions is now [1866] three thousand three hundred and twenty-six years old. The least ancient of them is two thousand four hundred and fifty-three years old. The difference in date between the most ancient and the most modern of them is eight hundred and seventy-three years. They were all written in Asia, so that we in this Western world can have no national pride respecting them. Yet pious people here and all over the earth have found and can find no compositions more suitable for delineating their devout emotions, and for expressing their pious sensibilities than those of inspired Psalmists. If to any man these songs are unsavory, the reason is found in the blindness and depravity of the human heart. Hengstenberg: "The Psalms are expressions of holy feeling, which can be understood by those only, who have become alive to such feeling." Other things being equal, he who has the most heavenly mind, will be the most successful student of the Psalms. - Introduction

The Shape and Shaping of the Psalter by J. Clinton McCann, Jr. Pdf

The nine essays in this volume originated in the discussions of the Psalms programme unit of the Society of Biblical Literature and a number were first presented as papers at the SBL meetings in 1989 and 1990. The volume documents the growing interest among scholars in understanding the book of Psalms not only as a collection of liturgical materials from ancient Israel and Judah but also as a coherent literary whole. Part I considers the nature and significance of this new approach; it contains essays by J.L. Mays, Roland E. Murphy, Walter Brueggemann, Gerald H. Wilson and David M. Howard, Jr. Part II illustrates the application of this approach and offers preliminary conclusions concerning the shape of the Psalter and its component books; it contains essays by Gerald H. Wilson, Patrick D. Miller, Jr, J. Clinton McCann, Jr. and David M. Howard, Jr.

Psalms and Hebrews by Dirk J. Human,Gert Jacobus Steyn Pdf

The reception of early Jewish/Israelite texts in early Christianity provides valuable insights into the hermeneutics of ancient authors and studies in this regard are vital for an understanding of their theology/ies. By focusing particularly on the reception of the Psalms through the hand of the unknown author of Hebrews, Old Testament and New Testament scholars combine forces in this collection to determine the shifts in interpretation of the Psalms that took place during the processes of (re)interpretation within the work of a particular early Christian writer. By paying careful attention to the original reading(s) of the text versions utilized as well as to the manner in which those texts were embedded in a later literary context by the author of Hebrews, they provide a window into the trajectories of the Psalm traditions. A contextual contribution illustrates the versification of the Psalms in a contemporary African language, Afrikaans, to illustrate how the Psalms' reception remains a vivid endeavor in current times.
