An Introduction to Entomology by John Henry Comstock Pdf
Excerpt from An Introduction to Entomology This work has been prepared to meet the demand for a textbook which shall enable students to acquire a thorough knowledge of the elementary principles of Entomology, and to classify insects by means of analytical keys similar to those used in Botany. By means of the keys the student can readily determine to what family any insect of which he has a specimen belongs. In many cases tables of genera are also given; and the more common or conspicuous species in each family have been described. Although much pains has been taken to render easy the classification of specimens, an effort has been made to give the mere determination of the names of insects a very subordinate place. The groups of insects have been fully characterized, so that their relative affinities may be learned; and much space has been given to accounts of the habits and transformations of the forms described. As the needs of Agricultural students have been kept constantly in view, those species that are of economic importance have been described as fully as practicable, and particular attention has been given to descriptions of the methods of destroying those that are noxious, or of preventing their ravages. The pronunciation of the technical terms has been indicated by marking the accented vowel, and at the same time indicating its length when the term is pronounced as an English word. All the illustrations not credited to other sources are original, and have been and engraved by Mrs. Comstock. Handbook of Agricultural Entomology by Helmut F. van Emden Pdf
Handbook of Agricultural Entomology by Helmut van Emden is a landmark publication for students and practitioners of entomology applied to agriculture and horticulture. It can be used as a reference and as a general textbook. The book opens with a general introduction to entomology and includes coverage of the major insects (and mites) that cause harm to crops, livestock and humans. The important beneficial species are also included. Organisms are described in a classification of insect Orders and Families. The emphasis is on morphological characters of major taxonomic divisions, “spot characters” for the recognition of Families, and the life histories, damage symptoms and economic importance of the various pest species. The book is beautifully illustrated in full colour with more than 400 figures showing both the organisms and the damage caused to plants with diagnostic characters indicated by arrows. Coverage is world-wide and includes much material stemming from the vast personal experience of the author.
