Excerpt from An Introduction to Fox-Hunting: With Notes on Hunting Terms and Point-to-Point Races Health and nerve are two such necessary qualities in fox-hunting, and both are so easily lost, that it is unnecessary to do more than to remark that the sportsman, whilst he should not shrink from accept ance Of sporting risks, should never play tricks with his constitution. Foxhunting by Hugh J. Robards Pdf

Internationally renowned Master and huntsman Hugh J. Robards, MFH engagingly informs foxhunters, new or experienced, how to more fully absorb the drama of the hunt. What is the huntsman doing? Why does he do that? What about the whippers-in? The Field Master? The hounds? The fox? What problems do each encounter in the field during the course of a typical hunt? What decisions must they make? It may be a revelation to some, especially those who hunt to ride, but even while standing still, things are happening if you know what to look for and how to interpret what you see. By learning what to watch and listen for, field members can increase their awareness and thus their enjoyment of every hunting day.

Hunting the Fox by R. G. Verney Pdf

Originally published in 1920. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are now republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. PREFACE: IN offering these reflections to the public I wish to disclailn any intention of laying down the law. what I have written is derived from my own experience as M.F.H., and from what I have tried to learn from serving as an apprentice under my Father, whose Advice on FOX-Hunting was pub- lished in 1906.....CHAPTER I: THE FUTURE OF FOX-HUNTING. WHEN we declared war upon Germany in 1914, many people thought, some perhaps hoped, that Fox-hunting in the British Isles was doomed. It would appear that the former are likely to experience a pleasant shock of surprise, while the latter- if there be any-may be disappointed. For the immediate consequence of mobilization was the recognition of Fox-hunting as a first-class national asset. It is not too much to say that the Expedi- tionary Force could not have left England unless the nation could have drawn upon studs of well- bred hunters to bring the Peace establishment of Army horses up to war strength. Never were Cavalry so quickly or so well mounted as those regiments of Regulars and Yeomanry who embarked for France in August 1914. But quite apart from the point of view of national utility, Fox-hunting will surely survive from its own innate qualities. The manner in which it has lived through all the obstacles of war time is a sufficient testimony to its vitality. And here let us pay our tribute to those who have helped the sport through these critical times to the tact and sagacity of the Committee of the M.F.H. Association, and above all to those who through age, sex, or any other reason, were pre- vented from serving in the Army, and who took the Hounds out day after day under very trying conditions. ...

The Fox-Hunting Controversy, 1781-2004 by Allyson N. May Pdf

August 1781 saw the publication of a manual on fox hunting that would become a classic of its genre. Hugely popular in its own day, Peter Beckford's Thoughts on Hunting is often cited as marking the birth of modern hunting and continues to be quoted from affectionately today by the hunting fraternity. Less stressed is the fact that its subject was immediately controversial, and that a hostile review which appeared on the heels of the manual's publication raised two criticisms of fox hunting that would be repeated over the next two centuries: fox hunting was a cruel sport and a feudal, anachronistic one at that. This study explores the attacks made on fox hunting from 1781 to the legal ban achieved in 2004, as well as assessing the reasons for its continued appeal and post-ban survival. Chapters cover debates in the areas of: class and hunting; concerns over cruelty and animal welfare; party politics; the hunt in literature; and nostalgia. By adopting a thematic approach, the author is able to draw out the wider social and cultural implications of the debates, and to explore what they tell us about national identity, social mores and social relations in modern Britain.
