Laboratory Optics by Peter Beyersdorf Pdf

A multimedia interactive guide to developing practical skills for optics research. Use as a class lab manual, an instructional tool or as an indispensable reference. In concise, high-def videos, various skills and techniques are demonstrated and explained. These cover topics for the novice, such as mounting and cleaning of optics, as well as for the more advanced learner, such as balanced detection, and lock-in amplifiers. Various interactive widgets let you simulate the experience of aligning a laser beam to an optical system, aligning an interferometer to get fringes, or adjust a Fabry-Perot cavity while observing the mode spectrum. Other tools help you quickly find the Gaussian beam parameters of your laser from measured beam radii, and to calculate the position of a lens or pair of lenses to mode match a laser to a cavity.

Introduction to Optical Components by Roshan L. Aggarwal,Kambiz Alavi Pdf

"This book provides a practical description of optics that satisfies the needs often encountered by some engineers in the practice of their profession. Optical components, including optical sources and detectors, have found their way into products that we buy for the house, and into industrial equipment. As a textbook, it provides an efficient tool for the student to gain in-depth knowledge of a subject, with homework problems to test and verify mastery of the subject." —Antonio Sanchez-Rubio, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Lexington, Massachusetts, USA "This book covers all the experimental tools, described meticulously and with clear illustrations, which students will need to perform their experiments. I wish I had this book when I taught an optics course!" —A.K. Ramdas, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA This book provides readers with a brief introduction to optical components. Materials presented in this book prepare readers to deal with optical components in the areas of optics and optical technology. Introduction to Optical Components features nine chapters with topics ranging from lenses (materials, magnifiers, and cameras); mirrors (spherical, ellipsoidal, and aberrations); diffraction gratings (holographic and multilayer dielectric); polarizers (birefringent, reflective, and Jones matrix algebra); windows (UV and AR coating materials); filters (neutral density and Raman); beamsplitters (plate, cube, and pellicle); sources (light-emitting diodes and lasers); and detectors (thermal, photon, and photodetector noise). This text also features a detailed discussion of non-ideal effects for practical components using minimal amounts of derivations (that do not compromise essential physical, mathematical, or material properties). While there are numerous books that feature "optical" in their title, to date, no textbook on optical components exists. It is for this reason that Introduction to Optical Components is such a vital resource. The technical level of this book is equivalent to an undergraduate course in the optics and optical technology curriculum. Students are required to have little familiarity with optics. Practitioners in optics and optical technology will also find this book useful. Each chapter includes numerous mathematical equations; tables providing useful optical parameters for many optical materials; and end-of-chapter questions and their corresponding solutions.

Practical Opto-Electronics by Vladimir Protopopov Pdf

This book explains how to create opto-electronic systems in a most efficient way, avoiding typical mistakes. It covers light detection techniques, imaging, interferometry, spectroscopy, modulation-demodulation, heterodyning, beam steering and many other topics common to laboratory applications. The focus is made on self-explanatory figures rather than on words. The book guides the reader through the entire process of creating problem-specific opto-electronic systems, starting from optical source, through beam transportation optical arrangement, to photodetector and data acquisition system. The relevant basics of beam propagation and computer-based raytracing routines are also explained, and sample codes are listed. the book teaches important know-how and practical tricks that are never disclosed in scientific publications. The book can become the reader's personal adviser in the world of opto-electronics and navigator in the ocean of the market of optical components and systems. Succinct, well-illustrated and clearly written, this book is helpful for students, postgraduates, engineers and researches working not only in the field of applied optics but also in high-tech industry, information technology, medicine, biology and other domains.

A Practical Introduction to Optical Mineralogy by Colin Gribble Pdf

Microscopy is a servant of all the sciences, and the microscopic examina tion of minerals is an important technique which should be mastered by all students of geology early in their careers. Advanced modern text books on both optics and mineralogy are available, and our intention is not that this new textbook should replace these but that it should serve as an introductory text or a first stepping-stone to the study of optical mineralogy. The present text has been written with full awareness that it will probably be used as a laboratory handbook, serving as a quick reference to the properties of minerals, but nevertheless care has been taken to present a systematic explanation of the use of the microscope as well as theoretical aspects of optical mineralogy. The book is therefore suitable for the novice either studying as an individual or participating in classwork. Both transmitted-light microscopy and reflected-light microscopy are dealt with, the former involving examination of transparent minerals in thin section and the latter involving examination of opaque minerals in polished section. Reflected-light microscopy is increasing in importance in undergraduate courses on ore mineralisation, but the main reason for combining the two aspects of microscopy is that it is no longer acceptable to neglect opaque minerals in the systematic petrographic study of rocks. Dual purpose microscopes incorporating transmitted- and reflected-light modes are readily available, and these are ideal for the study of polished thin sections.
