This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ...This can easily be illustrated by a simple experiment. If two substances, silver and sulphuric acid are brought into contact with each other, a force is generated, which can be induced in to a small pith ball by means of a copper wire. Similarly, charge with electricity another nicely balanced ball with the same kind of electricity and bring the two balls together. The two balls repel each other and fly apart. Now, instead of silver, dip zinc, we get another force of a similar nature, but exhibiting different properties and the two balls electrified by means of this process show an inclination not to meet each other but to fly away from each other as did the first set of balls. But if we bring a ball of the first electricity close to a ball of the second electricity, we at once observe a marked change in their behaviour. Instead of flying away from each other they attract one another, and remain in contact, until we separate them with the necessary force. Here we observe certain laws. Electricity generated by the contact of silver with sulphuric acid differs from electricity derived from zinc and sulphuric acid. The first kind of electricity is called Positive or North, and the second is called Negative or South electrify city. In the Universe, there is no object which is not pervaded by! this great physical agent called electricity, and in all objects, whether animated or not, we see positive and negative electricities combining together, only with this difference that the quantities of these two kinds of electricities are not equal and constant in those bodies.. There is also another fact in this connection which is worthy of notice and that is, that in nature, under certain physical conditions, which have not been clearly understood by...

Astrology in India by Nupurnima Yadav Pdf

This book critically examines the larger world of astrology in India, its ubiquity and relationship with religion, caste, gender, class and aspirations. It looks at astrology through an empirical and phenomenological lens, analyzing different meanings and questions associated with it. How do people see astrology—as magic, science, religion, or a knowledge system? The volume analyses the role of astrology in religious and social ceremonies; the interplay of faith and fear; beliefs, practices, mysticism, and skepticism in middle-class households; and gendered negotiations in everyday life. It also delves into how astrology has emerged as a livelihood and an industry, the continued fascination with it even in an era of technological advancement, and its domination of the vernacular media. Insightful and highly comprehensive, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers of sociology, political sociology, social anthropology, anthropology, cultural studies, gender studies and urban Sociology.

The History of Physics: A Very Short Introduction by J. L. Heilbron Pdf

How does the physics we know today - a highly professionalised enterprise, inextricably linked to government and industry - link back to its origins as a liberal art in Ancient Greece? What is the path that leads from the old philosophy of nature and its concern with humankind's place in the universe to modern massive international projects that hunt down fundamental particles and industrial laboratories that manufacture marvels? This Very Short Introduction introduces us to Islamic astronomers and mathematicians calculating the size of the earth whilst their caliphs conquered much of it; to medieval scholar-theologians investigating light; to Galileo, Copernicus, Kepler, and Newton, measuring, and trying to explain, the universe. We visit the 'House of Wisdom' in 9th-century Baghdad; Europe's first universities; the courts of the Renaissance; the Scientific Revolution and the academies of the 18th century; and the increasingly specialised world of 20th and 21st century science. Highlighting the shifting relationship between physics, philosophy, mathematics, and technology - and the implications for humankind's self-understanding - Heilbron explores the changing place and purpose of physics in the cultures and societies that have nurtured it over the centuries. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

ASTROLOGY – A SCIENCE OF THE QUANTUM WORLD by Vikram Divakar, Soundar Divakar Pdf

This book attempts to highlight the scientific aspects and implications of Astrology. An attempt has been made by the authors to explore certain fascinating scientific probabilities to explain Astrology. This journey explores Quantum Mechanical aspects of Quantum Entanglement and Quantum Gravity and the, General and Special Theory of Relativity of Einstein in relation to Space-Time distortion and the Time-Lag of planetary influence, String-Super-String-Brane-M Theories, Dark Energy and lensing effects of planets, as possible routes to understanding the influence of planets on the genetic materials of human beings. This book, further highlights the role of two other important factors –, namely, genetic make-up of the individual and the environment in which the individual grows –, in super-imposing the effect of planets at birth for making an accurate prediction. The unique placement of the moon in terms of its probable ‘lensing effect’ is highlighted. Astrological criteria to promote and sustain life on exo-planets, is also explained in a chapter. The final chapter deals with irrational practices and mis-concepts existing in astrological practices and the dire need to get rid of such practices to enhance the acceptability and credibility of Astrology.

Science and Eastern Orthodoxy by Efthymios Nicolaidis Pdf

People have pondered conflicts between science and religion since at least the time of Christ. The millennia-long debate is well documented in the literature in the history and philosophy of science and religion in Western civilization. Science and Eastern Orthodoxy is a departure from that vast body of work, providing the first general overview of the relationship between science and Christian Orthodoxy, the official church of the Oriental Roman Empire. This pioneering study traces a rich history over an impressive span of time, from Saint Basil’s Hexameron of the fourth century to the globalization of scientific debates in the twentieth century. Efthymios Nicolaidis argues that conflicts between science and Greek Orthodoxy—when they existed—were not science versus Christianity but rather ecclesiastical debates that traversed the whole of society. Nicolaidis explains that during the Byzantine period, the Greek fathers of the church and their Byzantine followers wrestled passionately with how to reconcile their religious beliefs with the pagan science of their ancient ancestors. What, they repeatedly asked, should be the church’s official attitude toward secular knowledge? From the rise of the Ottoman Empire in the fifteenth century to its dismantling in the nineteenth century, the patriarchate of Constantinople attempted to control the scientific education of its Christian subjects, an effort complicated by the introduction of European science in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Science and Eastern Orthodoxy provides a wealth of new information concerning Orthodoxy and secular knowledge—and the reactions of the Orthodox Church to modern sciences.
