An Introduction to the Study of Ecclesiastical Polity (Classic Reprint) by William Jones Seabury Pdf

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Ecclesiastical Polity Few subjects are more important, or, in view of the confusing effect of controversies, more difficult to be understood, than that of the government of the Church; not only as such understanding affects our duty to God in the matter of religious faith, but also as it bears upon our duty to our neighbor, and particularly upon what we owe to the Civil Authority. The following pages are the result of an effort to think out to their proper conclusions certain fundamental principles in this subject considered in these relations, and to apply the conclusions to existing facts. What success may have attended the effort, the reader will determine according to his own judgment, which, in many cases, will doubtless be more just than that of the writer. The effort, however, with such assistance as the writer has been able to derive from the learning of others, has been honestly made; and although neither in its principles nor in its applications does it extend so far as is desirable, yet the process which it essays is certainly one for which there is great need, especially in regard to the American system here treated. If the book shall in any degree meet the need, or prove of service in aiding others to meet it, the author will be content. In Order to Serve by Leo J. Koffeman Pdf

Ecclesiology is in the centre of current ecumenical dialogue. However, this hardly seems to influence theological reflection on church polity. This book explores new avenues in this respect, in an attempt to enhance a truly ecumenical and inter-cultural approach of the theological discipline of church polity, without neglecting its juridical character.

The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity in Modern English by W. Bradford Littlejohn,Bradley Belschner,Brian Marr Pdf

"That posterity may know we have not loosely through silence permitted things to pass away as in a dream..." So opens Richard Hooker's Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity, one of the great landmarks of Protestant theological literature, and indeed of English literature generally. Sadly, however, recent generations of church leaders and scholars have come perilously close to allowing his work to pass away as in a dream. Locked away in a rich and beautiful, but labyrinthine and archaic Elizabethan prose style, Hooker's writings are scarcely read-and for many, scarcely readable-today. This new edition of Hooker's Laws "translates" his prose into modern English for the first time, without sacrificing any of the theological depth or sparkling wit of the original. Although the Church of England and its "Puritan" critics have long since moved on from the specific controversy that gave rise to the Laws, the significance of this extraordinary work has not diminished-nor has the urgent need for the wisdom it has to offer, which is as relevant for 21st-century Christians as it was for those in the sixteenth. Addressing such timeless questions as the role of Scripture in the life of the Church, the relationship of conscience to authority, the appropriate use of reason and tradition in theology, and the meaning of Protestantism's protest against Rome, this first volume of Hooker's Laws in Modern English promises to challenge and equip a new generation of Christian readers.
