An Upraised Chalice by Gene O'Neil Pdf

A travel adventure story, the author's epic journey of self-discovery, with spiritual realizations and intense physical challenges along the way, including multiple near-death experiences. Many have turned away from traditional organized religions to explore their own relationship with the Divine. The author is one of these seekers and this book chronicles his coming to terms with an inner understanding of reincarnation that he could faintly remember as a boy and sought to understand more fully as he grew older. It follows him to many of the world's sacred places--across Europe to the Middle East, from Jerusalem to Istanbul then overland to Nepali/Tibetan monasteries in the Himalayas on the way to Mount Everest, from Darjeeling to Saranath where the Buddha taught his first sermon, from the cremation vats of Benares on the banks of the Ganges to the mystical plains of South India. It is the inspiring story of a lifetime's quest for the sacred, ancient wisdom, alluded to by the mystical traditions of the world's cultures. All of this while experiencing the teachings and miraculous intercessions of the Great Ones--the great masters, sages and saints of East and West who compose the Brotherhood of Light. This accounting differs from other stories detailing near-death experiences on multiple fronts, by their repeated nature and the karmic circumstances surrounding each one. This story details the lifelong chain of events that brought about these intercessions and the prior and subsequent interactions with the Great Ones that so shaped Gene's life. And there is a much deeper story here. A story that is vast in its implications and that contains a challenge to all who seek to know the truth - a story that helps to answer our greatest questions: Who are we? Why are we here?

With these seventeen steps, you'll be able to prevent your love for God from being diminished by day-to-day pressures. The author, Fr. Leo J. Trese, helps you to integrate into your actions the truths you profess. Trese shows you: Why Heaven is worth living for, working for, and suffering for in this life God's anger: what the inspired writers of Scripture mean when they use this phrase - and how you can avoid this anger Do you truly belong to Christ? Four qualities you'll have if you do What you must do if your confessions have become casual and thoughtless "It's only a venial sin" why this is one of the saddest phrases you could ever speak God's judgment: how you can (and should) start getting ready now for this moment of divine truth Suffering from strong temptations? Three things you can do today to overcome them Plus: more to help you attain a truly soul-nourishing relationship with God!

The Contemporary Irish Novel by Linden Peach Pdf

This essential guide offers innovative critical readings of key contemporary novels from Ireland and Northern Ireland. Linden Peach discusses texts that are representative of the richness of Irish writing during the 1980s and 1990s, and reads works by established authors alongside those by the new generation of writers. The novels examined include works by John Banville, Jennifer Johnston, Roddy Doyle, Emma Donoghue, Seamus Deane, William Trevor, Dermot Bolger, Joseph O'Connor, Patrick McCabe, Mary Morrissy, Glenn Patterson and Robert McLiam Wilson. The Contemporary Irish Novel addresses themes such as ghosts and haunting, mimicry, obedience and subversion, the relocation and reinscription of identity, the mother figure, parent-child relations, madness, masculinity, self-harm, sexuality, domestic violence, fetishism and postmodernity. Drawing on a range of critical approaches including postcolonial, gender and psychoanalytic theory, Peach explores and celebrates the diversity of Irish fiction and suggests that the boundary between literature and theory is as permeable as that between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Morgantina Studies, Volume VI by Shelley C. Stone Pdf

Excavation of the ancient city of Morgantina in southeastern Sicily since 1955 has recovered an extraordinary quantity and variety of pottery, both locally made and imported. This volume presents the fine-ware pottery dating between the second half of the fourth century BCE, when Morgantina was a thriving inland center closely tied to the Hellenistic east through Syracuse, and the first half of the first century CE, when Morgantina had been reduced to a dwindling Roman provincial town that would soon be abandoned. Bearing gloss and often paint or relief, these fine ceramics were mostly tableware, and together they provide a well-defined picture of the evolving material culture of an important urban site over several centuries. And since virtually all these vessels come from dated deposits, this volume provides wide-ranging contributions to the chronology of Hellenistic and early Roman pottery. An introductory chapter sketches out a comprehensive history of the city, discusses the many well-dated archaeological deposits that contained the excavated pottery, and defines the major fabrics of the ceramics found at the site. The bulk of the volume consists of a scholarly presentation of more than 1,500 pottery vessels, analyzing their shapes, fabrics, chronology, decoration, and techniques of fabrication. This rich ceramic material includes significant bodies of Republican black-gloss and red-gloss vases, Sicilian polychrome ware, and Eastern Sigillata A, as well as early Italian terra sigillata, with numerous examples imported from Arezzo and other Italian centers, along with regional versions from Campania and elsewhere on Sicily. The relief ware includes important groups of third-century BCE medallion cups and hemispherical moldmade cups of the second and first centuries BCE. Morgantina was also an active center of pottery production, and the debris from several workshops has been recovered, enabling Shelley Stone to reconstruct the working techniques and materials of the local craftsmen, the range of ceramics they produced, and how their products were influenced by pottery imported to the site from elsewhere on Sicily, the Italian mainland, and even more distant centers. The volume also presents new information about the sources of the clay used by the Morgantina potters, as revealed by X-ray fluorescence analysis of selected vases.
