Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.

As You Like it by Penny Gay,William Shakespeare Pdf

One of the best loved of Shakespeare's 'middle comedies', As You Like It has rarely been out of the theatrical repertoire. Centering on the cross-dressed figure of Rosalind, the play both celebrates and questions the state of being in love. This study attempts to recreate the Elizabethan audience's experience of the play - its awareness of issues that have been elided in subsequent, simply 'romantic' readings. Using an innovative theory of the significance of the Globe's stage space, Penny Gay examines the play's presentation of issues of power, sexuality, gender and genre.

Sonnets by William Shakespeare Pdf

Among the most enduring poetry of all time, William Shakespeare’s 154 sonnets address such eternal themes as love, beauty, honesty, and the passage of time. Written primarily in four-line stanzas and iambic pentameter, Shakespeare’s sonnets are now recognized as marking the beginning of modern love poetry. The sonnets have been translated into all major written languages and are frequently used at romantic celebrations. Known as “The Bard of Avon,” William Shakespeare is arguably the greatest English-language writer known. Enormously popular during his life, Shakespeare’s works continue to resonate more than three centuries after his death, as has his influence on theatre and literature. Shakespeare’s innovative use of character, language, and experimentation with romance as tragedy served as a foundation for later playwrights and dramatists, and some of his most famous lines of dialogue have become part of everyday speech. As You Like It (Annotated with Biography and Critical Essay) by William Shakespeare Pdf

As You Like It was written around 1599 and is one of Shakespeare’s comedies. It is set in a pastoral world (an idealized rural setting) and is full of jokes, songs, puns, and romance. It is one of the most light-hearted of Shakespeares works. There are more songs in As You Like It than any other Shakespeare play. The play makes many references to classical mythology and medieval folklore. It was inspired by Thomas Lodge’s story Rosalynde published in 1590. The play is partly set in the countryside in France, in the Forest of Arden (or, alternatively, Ardenne). In contrast, the other setting is the court of a duchy. In the duchy, Duke Frederick has successfully usurped his brother Duke Senior from his position as ruler. Duke Senior has been exiled to the Forest of Arden, where he vows to begin anew, along with his followers and supporters. The exiles talk about the qualities of court life and how they compare to country life. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.
