English Sentence Analysis by Marjolijn Verspoor,Kim Sauter Pdf

English Sentence Analysis: An introductory course is designed as a 10-week course for students of English Language and Literature, Linguistics, or other language related fields. In 10 weeks the student will be proficient in English analysis at sentence, clause and phrase level and have a solid understanding of the traditional terms and concepts of English syntax. This introduction prepares for practical courses in grammar and writing skills and for theoretical courses in syntactic argumentation. The Course Book provides sentence structures in clear graphics; logically structured chapters with Introductions and Summaries; exercises with quotations and excerpts from English, American and Australian literature and pop songs. English Sentence Analysis: An introductory course has been classroom tested at various universities. The students seem to enjoy the ‘dreaded’ syntax course and pass rates have gone up significantly from 50 to 70%. Originally, this book was accompanied by a CD-rom with a Practice Program for Windows. The Practice Program on CD-rom is not updated anymore by its creators and as a result is no longer compatible with current Windows versions. For this reason, we have ceased to include it with the book.

Analysis of the English Sentence, Designed for Advanced Classes in English Grammar by A. S. Welch Pdf

Excerpt from Analysis of the English Sentence, Designed for Advanced Classes in English Grammar This treatise, designed for advanced classes in English Grammar, is given to the public with the hope that it may contribute somewhat to the philosophical study of our language. A systematic analysis of the English Sentence, should hold a prominent rank, merely as an important means of mental development. In this respect no branch of study has been regarded so dry and sterile. A few years ago the attainments of most teachers in grammar were, to the last degree, superficial, and their instructions systematically wrong. The student of Kirkham supposed that his order of parsing exhausted the subject, and the disciple of Murray knew far more of rules than relations. The Analysis of the English Sentence With Supplement by Marion Nelson Beeman Pdf

Excerpt from The Analysis of the English Sentence With Supplement It is intended that this little book shall tell its own story. It is denied that Grammar should be a discussion of only the forms of language. To ignore meanings and relations of meanings as expressed by language forms is to rob this most useful branch of all but the most absolutely voluntary interest. It is argued by many prominent educators, that to carry grammar studies into the realm of thought is to encroach upon the province of logic. But is that a valid argument against considering thought in grammar studies? The unit of language study is the sentence. The purpose of logic is to discuss the reasoning process, to secure correct reasoning, - and the unit of reasoning is the syllogism. Grammar studies the notion and the judgment, and ends in the expression of the judgment, that is, the sentence. Logic studies the notion and the judgment that it may prepare for the clear grasp of the reasoning process, which process finds its expression in the syllogism. Analysing English Sentences by Andrew Radford Pdf

Analysing English Sentences provides a concise and clear introduction to work in syntactic theory, drawing on the key concepts of Chomsky's Minimalist Program. Assuming little or no prior knowledge of syntax or minimalism, Radford outlines the core concepts and leading ideas and how they can be used to describe various aspects of the syntax of English. A diverse range of topics is covered, including syntactic structure, null constituents, head movement, case and agreement and split projections. Using Radford's trademark approach and writing style, the book is intensive and progressive in nature, introducing grammatical concepts and working in stages towards more complex phenomena.
