The Anatomy of Pattern (Classic Reprint) by Lewis F. Day Pdf

Excerpt from The Anatomy of Pattern There was a time in my own struggling for artistic existence, when I should have been so grateful for any practical teaching in ornament, that I fancy there must be students who will find it helpful to have set plainly before them what I have had to puzzle out for myself Hence this series of d104 Books of Ornamental Design; in which I have amplified and illustrated the substance of a series of Cantor Lectures delivered in December last before the Society of Arts. I have assumed no great amount of technical or artistic knowledge on the part of the reader only that he wants to know. And, elementary as my subject is, I have taken some pains to save him all unnecessary effort in following my meaning. The illustrations are to be taken literally as illustrations, and not by any means considered as ornamental addenda to the book. Pattern Design by Lewis F. Day Pdf

Take any form you choose and repeat it at regular intervals, and, just as repetitive sounds produce rhythm or cadence, you have pattern. However, the use of pattern in design is no haphazard matter, but a disciplined activity in which the artists must impose a pleasing order and structure on the whole to achieve an aesthetically satisfying end product. This classic guide, revised and expanded by Amor Fenn three decades after its publication, teaches artists to do just that. Surveying a multitude of applications, from architectural detail to decorative textile printing and typographic patterns, Day provides insight into the geometric foundations of all repeating patterns, and treats in a practical way the anatomy, planning, and evolution of repeated ornament. He demonstrates the extent to which pattern is the essence of the ornamental arts, and offers a wealth of technical information for the student and designer. Generously illustrated with more than 270 designs ranging from old Japanese, Persian, and Arabian patterns to early 20th-century motifs, Pattern Design will stimulate the imaginations and advance the skills of novices and experts alike.

Pattern Design by Lewis F. Day Pdf

Excerpt from Pattern Design: A Book for Students Treating in a Practical Way of the Anatomy, Planning Evolution of Repeated Ornament A man has a right, I suppose, to pull down the building he once put up, and to raise another in its place. If he should see fit to use sometimes the very stones which belonged to it, he would only be stealing from himself. I have done something very much like that. In the course of the last fifteen years the times have changed, and with them the standpoint of students and teachers of design; and, though my point of view has not altered, my outlook has widened with experience. When it came to the revision of "The Anatomy of Pattern" with a view to a fifth edition, it seemed to me I had done all 1 could do to it, that it was past mending, and that the simplest thing would be to start afresh. The present volume, however, though it covers the ground of the former one, and answers much the same purpose, is not the same, but really a new book upon the foundations of the old one. It contains, indeed, all that was in the other, but otherwise expressed. Here and there an explanation or description, which, by revision after revision, had been reduced to the fewest and plainest words I could find, has been allowed to stand. So with the illustrations, the greater number of them are new. Such of the old diagrams as were essential to the purpose of the book have been drawn again, not merely on the larger scale allowed by the page, but in a simpler and more self-explanatory way. Web Anatomy by Robert Hoekman Jr.,Jared Spool Pdf

At the start of every web design project, the ongoing struggles reappear. We want to design highly usable and self-evident applications, but we also want to devise innovative, compelling, and exciting interactions that make waves in the market. Projects are more sophisticated than ever, but we have fewer resources with which to complete them. Requirements are fuzzy at best, but we’re expected to have everything done yesterday. What we need is a reuse strategy, coupled with a pathway to innovation. Patterns are part of the game. Components take us further. In Web Anatomy: Interaction Design Frameworks That Work, user experience experts Hoekman and Spool introduce “interaction design frameworks”, the third and final piece of what they call “The Reuse Trinity”, and resolve these issues once and for all. Frameworks are sets of design patterns and other elements that comprise entire systems, and in this game-changing book, Hoekman and Spool show you how to identify, document, share, use, and reap the benefits of frameworks. They also dive deep into several major frameworks to reveal how the psychology behind these standards leads not only to effective designs, but can also serve as the basis for cutting-edge innovations and superior user experiences. Web Anatomy delivers: A complete guide to using interaction design frameworks An examination of the psychology behind major frameworks A thorough look at how frameworks will change the way you work for the better Citing examples from both the successful and not-so-successful, the authors break down the elements that comprise several common interactive web systems, discuss implementation considerations, offer examples of innovations based on these standards, reveal how frameworks work hand in hand with patterns and components, and show you how to integrate frameworks into your process. Read Web Anatomy now. Benefit from it for years to come. Jared Spool is a world-renowned design researcher and the founder of UIE.com. Robert Hoekman, Jr. is a veteran user experience specialist and the author of Designing the Obvious and Designing the Moment.
