The Lansdowne Herakles by Seymour Howard Pdf

For many years J. Paul Getty considered the Lansdowne Herakles the most important antiquity in his museum. In addition to appreciating the history of the sculpture and its artistic merit, Mr. Getty had considerable affection for the hero himself. In this revised and expanded edition of his 1966 monograph, Dr. Howard uses numerous illustrations to introduce new information concerning the modern history of the sculpture and to review the arguments for attributing it to different sculptors. In addition, he proposes its possible attribution to the fourth-century Athenian master Euphranor, an artist not previously associated with the statue. The Herakles is now displayed in the new presentation achieved by the museum's antiquities conservator Zdravko Barov, whose report concerning his procedure and findings is also presented.

Ancient Marbles in Great Britain 2 Part Set by Adolf Michaelis Pdf

Professor Adolf Michaelis (1835-1910) was a classical scholar specialising in Greek and Roman sculpture. He studied classical philology and archaeology at the University of Leipzig before being appointed Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Strasbourg in 1872. First published in 1882 and translated by Charles Augustus Fennel (1843-1916) a classicist and Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge, these volumes provide a comprehensive catalogue with descriptions of all ancient Greek and Roman sculptures held in private collections in the United Kingdom between 1873 (when Michaelis started his survey of private collections) and 1882. Many classical sculptures were imported into Britain and private collections established during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Michaelis discusses in detail the history and context of this collecting in this exhaustive account, still used as a reference by scholars.

The Egyptian Revival by James Stevens Curl Pdf

In this beautifully illustrated and closely argued book, a completely updated and much expanded third edition of his magisterial survey, Curl describes in lively and stimulating prose the numerous revivals of the Egyptian style from Antiquity to the present day. Drawing on a wealth of sources, his pioneering and definitive work analyzes the remarkable and persistent influence of Ancient Egyptian culture on the West. The author deftly develops his argument that the civilization of Ancient Egypt is central, rather than peripheral, to the development of much of Western architecture, art, design, and religion. Curl examines: the persistence of Egyptian motifs in design from Graeco-Roman Antiquity, through the Medieval, Baroque, and Neo-Classical periods rise of Egyptology in the nineteenth and twentieth-century manifestations of Egyptianisms prompted by the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb various aspects of Egyptianizing tendencies in the Art Deco style and afterwards. For students of art, architectural and ancient history, and those interested in western European culture generally, this book will be an inspiring and invaluable addition to the available literature.

The Quest for Classical Greece by Lucy Pollard Pdf

Greece and Asia Minor proved an irresistible lure to English visitors in the seventeenth century. These lands were criss-crossed by adventurers, merchants, diplomats and men of the cloth. In particular, John Covel (1638-1722) - chaplain to the Levant Company in the 1670s, later Master of Christ's College, Cambridge - was representative of a thoroughly eccentric band of Englishmen who saw Greece and the Ottoman world through the lens of classical history. Using a variety of sources, including Covel's largely unpublished diaries, Lucy Pollard shows that these curious travellers imported, alongside their copies of Pausanias and Strabo, a package of assumptions about the societies they discovered. Disparaging contemporary Greeks as unworthy successors to their classical ancestors allowed Englishmen to view themselves as the true inheritors of classical culture, even as - when opportunity arose - they removed antiquities from the sites they described. At the same time, they often admired the Turks, about whom they had fewer preconceptions. This is a major contribution to reception and post-Restoration ideas about antiquity.

Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology by Nancy Thomson de Grummond Pdf

With 1,125 entries and 170 contributors, this is the first encyclopedia on the history of classical archaeology. It focuses on Greek and Roman material, but also covers the prehistoric and semi-historical cultures of the Bronze Age Aegean, the Etruscans, and manifestations of Greek and Roman culture in Europe and Asia Minor. The Encyclopedia of the History of Classical Archaeology includes entries on individuals whose activities influenced the knowledge of sites and monuments in their own time; articles on famous monuments and sites as seen, changed, and interpreted through time; and entries on major works of art excavated from the Renaissance to the present day as well as works known in the Middle Ages. As the definitive source on a comparatively new discipline - the history of archaeology - these finely illustrated volumes will be useful to students and scholars in archaeology, the classics, history, topography, and art and architectural history.
