Excavations at ancient Methone since 2003 by the Greek Ministry of Culture have uncovered remains from the Late Neolithic period through the fourth-century B.C. destruction by Philip II of Macedon. Animals, Ancestors, and Ritual in Early Bronze Age Syria: An Elite Mortuary Complex from Umm el-Marra, edited by Johns Hopkins professor Glenn M. Schwartz, is a final report of the excavation of Tell Umm el-Marra in northern Syria, conducted in 1994-2010. It is likely the site of ancient Tuba, capital of a small kingdom in the Early and Middle Bronze periods, in the Jabbul plain between Aleppo and northern Mesopotamia. Its study advances our understanding of early Syrian complex society beyond the big cities of Antiquity. Of particular importance in the Early Bronze excavations are the results from the site necropolis, tombs of high-ranking persons containing objects of gold, silver, and lapis lazuli. Separate installations hold kungas (donkey x onager hybrids), sometimes along with human infants. This site provides the first archaeological attestation of the kunga equids, unique in the archaeology of third-millennium Syria and Mesopotamia.

The book focuses on the archaeology of the Late Geometric and Early Archaic North-Eastern Aegean through the emergence, manufacture, distribution and consumption of a regional pottery group known as G 2-3 Ware. It offers the first comprehensive, in-depth study through combination of scientific (fabric analysis) and traditional (morphological, stylistic, comparative and distribution analysis) methods. The large body of studied material allows for drawing conclusions on a broader geographical and historical scale, in contrast to earlier studies focused on individual sites. The manufacture, distribution and consumption patterns are characterised by diversity, which reflects a dynamic, multiethnic communication network developed in the Northern Aegean basin in the late 8th and the 7th c. BC. The adoption of G 2-3 Ware by local, Thracian coastal communities is discussed in the light of transfer of knowledge and social practices. It is argued that the G 2-3 Ware potters were aware of earlier and contemporaneous ceramic developments in southern Greece and Anatolia and created a blend of pottery features specific for each one of these areas. The study deconstructs the forged link between G 2-3 Ware and the Greek colonisation in the area, by linking it to a local, pre-colonial development.

This volume discusses the multidimensional aspects of the unique, and so far unprecedented for Macedonia, 191 sherds from Methone in Pieria, dated to ca 700 BCE, which bear inscriptions, graffiti, and (trade)marks inscribed, incised, scratched and rarely painted. The 191 vessels were unearthed during excavations in ancient Methone in Pieria, the oldest colony of Greeks from Eretria in the north according to tradition. The Methone find is unique for two reasons. First, most of the pottery dates between 730 and 700 BCE, a period from which very few examples of Greek writing survives. And second, inscribed ceramics, scratched or painted, are extremely rare in Macedonia. This new evidence of inscribed pottery from Methone is invaluable for classical studies, and the papers of this volume contribute notably to current discussions about: the Greeks and the Greek language in Macedonia; the Greek colonization; the pottery trade and the early Greek transport amphoras; trade, the symposium, and other contexts for the development of writing; the ‘alphabets’ of Methone and the introduction of the alphabet in Greece; the dialect(s) of Methone in relation to the Greek dialects; early Greek writing, literacy, and literary beginnings.
