From the eighth century to the turn of the millennium, East Anglia had a variety of identities thrust upon it by authors of the period who envisioned a unified England. Although they were not regional writers in the modern sense, Bede, Felix, the annalists of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, King Alfred of Wessex, Abbo of Fleury, and Ælfric of Eynsham took a keen interest in East Anglia, especially in its potential to undo English cultural cohesiveness as they imagined it. Angles on a Kingdom argues that those authors treated East Anglia as both a hindrance and a stimulus to the development of early English "national" consciousness. Combining close textual reading with consideration of early medieval barrow burials, coinage, border delineation, and rivalries between monastic houses, Joseph Grossi examines various forms of cultural affirmation and manipulation. Angles on a Kingdom shows that, over the course of roughly two and a half centuries, the literary metamorphoses of East Anglia hint at the region’s recurring tensions with its neighbours – tensions which suggest that writers who sought to depict a coherent England downplayed what they deemed to be dangerous impulses emanating from the island’s easternmost corner.
Late 6th century Britain. Regional kingdoms are engaged in a ruthless struggle for supremacy. To the south, Saxon kings predominate but, in the north, British leaders are combining in a final effort to overthrow their two Angle rivals in Deira and Bernicia. To survive, the Angle warlords must put aside their ancient rivalry. Acha, daughter of one king is chosen to act as ‘peace-weaver’ by marrying the rival leader. But when her intended husband kills her father and disinherits her young brother, she has to choose between her lover, her family and her duty to the wider kin. Against a backdrop of military campaigns that decide the shape of northern Britain, this story follows the personal tragedies that force siblings into rival camps. The outcome may be a united kingdom but families will be divided forever.

The Gods of Entropy and the Fifth Yin follows Dyfed Lucifer, the only descendant of the multi-dimensional “Hyperborean Masters of the Little Known Universe” to be born on an “earth” that has a history remarkably similar to ours. His mission is to reduce the suffering of humans (the hoi polloi – the fuzz on the peach and the salt of the Earth) and give them the tools to think independently. Standing in the way of Dyfed’s mission are the Haploids, the world’s executive power elite who captain almost every ship of state. These Haploids are the acolytes of myth and responsible for cults, political ideology fallacies, and a corporate establishment that keeps the hoi polloi slaves to debt. Thankfully, as an immortal, Dyfed has time on his hands for this epic quest that extends from early history to a gloomy future that (despite the author’s disclaimer) bears a striking resemblance to the world at large today. Witty, sagacious, and downright spicy, The Gods of Entropy combines satire and surrealism to hold a mirror up to our own civilization that will make readers alternatively chortle and gasp, and most importantly, reflect.
