Anglo-Saxon Architecture 3 Part Set by H. M. Taylor,Joan Taylor Pdf

This work is a complete catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon fabric surviving in the churches of England. Volumes I and II were originally published in hardback in 1965, with paperback editions appearing alongside the newly commissioned Volume III in the 1980s. Together, the three volumes provide an invaluable resource for the study of Anglo-Saxon architecture. Volume I, a short introduction, is a survey of pre-Conquest architectural features and the reasons for designating them as characteristically Anglo-Saxon. Volume II is the catalogue. In it each church is described in turn, in alphabetical order of parish names. Finally, the 1984 third volume was a landmark text in its field, taking the churches of Volumes I and II as its starting point, and establishing the logical basis for believing that churches do contain pre-Norman fabric. This volume also provides a comprehensive index and important amendments to the first two volumes.

Anglo-Saxon Architecture: by H. M. Taylor,Joan Taylor Pdf

The summation of a lifetime's study, this volume presents a comprehensive and fully-illustrated analysis of Anglo-Saxon architecture that was widely acclaimed when it first appeared in 1978. The principal architectural features and ornament of the 267 Anglo-Saxon churches surveyed in Volumes I and II form Dr Taylor's raw material. Four introductory chapters establish from first principles the logical basis for believing that these churches do indeed contain pre-Norman fabric. Individual elements like towers, arches, doorways, windows and capital decoration are then examined in detail. Comparisons are drawn wherever possible with contemporary continental practice and deductions are made about the reasons for important architectural features and the extent to which they had their origins in the requirements of monastic communities or the liturgy. The format of the hard cover edition has been reduced to match that of the paperback editions of Volumes I and II, (published in 1980).

The Architectural Setting of the Cult of Saints in the Early Christian West c.300-c.1200 by John Crook Pdf

This book explores the way in which church architecture from the earliest centuries of Christianity has been shaped by holy bones - the physical remains or 'relics' of those whom the Church venerated as saints. The Church's holy dead continued to exercise an influence on the living from beyond the grave, and their earthly remains provided a focus for prayer. The memoriae, house-churches and crypts of early Christian Rome; the elaborately decorated monuments containing the bodies of the bishops of Merovingian Gaul; the revival of ring crypts in the Carshingian empire; the crypts, 'tomb-shrines', and later high shrines of medieval England, all demonstrate how the presence of a holy body within a church influenced its very architecture. This is the first complete modern study of this hitherto somewhat neglected aspect of medieval church architecture in western Europe.

Handbook for History Teachers by W. H. Burston dec'd,Cyril Wallington Green,E J Nicholas,A K Dickinson,D Thompson Pdf

First published in 1972, Handbook for History Teachers is intended to be a general and comprehensive work of reference for teachers of history in primary and secondary schools of all kinds. The book covers all aspects of teaching history: among them are the use of sources, world history, art and history; principles of constructing a syllabus and the psychological aspects of history teaching. The bibliographical sections are arranged on three parts: school textbooks, a section on audio-visual-aids and, finally, books for the teacher and possibly for the sixth form. It thoroughly investigates and critiques the various methods employed in teaching history within classrooms and suggests alternatives wherever applicable. Diligently curated by the Standing Sub-Committee in History, University of London Institute of Education, the book still holds immense value in the understanding of pedagogy.

English Medieval Shrines by John Crook Pdf

The cult of saints is one of the most fascinating manifestations of medieval piety. It was intensely physical; saints were believed to be present in the bodily remains that they had left on earth. Medieval shrines were created in order to protect these relics and yet to show off their spiritual worth, at the same time allowing pilgrims limited access to them. English Medieval Shrines traces the development of such structures, from the earliest cult activities at saintly tombs in the late Roman empire, through Merovingian Gaul and the Carolingian Empire, via Anglo-Saxon England, to the great shrines of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The greater part of the book is a definitive exploration, on a basis that is at once thematic and chronological, of the major saints cults of medieval England, from the Norman Conquest to the Reformation. These include the famous cults of St Cuthbert, St Swithun, and St Thomas Becket - and lesser known figures such as St Eanswyth of Folkestone or St Ecgwine of Evesham. John Crook, an independent architectural historian, archaeological consultant, and photographer, is the foremost authority on English shrines. He has published numerous books and papers on the cult of saints.
