Ann Sheridan by Margie Schultz Pdf

Ann Sheridan came to Hollywood in 1933 as a finalist in a beauty contest, a publicity stunt for Paramount's Search for Beauty. Of the 30 contestants who appeared in the picture and the 6 finalists whom Paramount put under contract, she was the only one to achieve stardom. Her films included Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), They Drive by Night (1940), Kings Row (1942), and Come Next Spring (1956). Through the years, she appeared on stage and on many radio and television programs. As with her film career, her broadcasting work was diverse, including appearances in dramas, comedies, talk shows, variety revues, and game shows. In 1965 she joined the cast of Another World, thus becoming one of the first movie stars to appear in a soap opera. Her role led to a prime time series, the situation comedy Pistols 'n' Petticoats (1966-1967). She died during production. This reference book chronicles Ann Sheridan's fascinating life and career. The volume begins with a biography that traces her rise to stardom and her many successes in the entertainment world. A chronology then summarizes the most important events in her life. The chapters that follow provide detailed information for her work in films, radio, and television. Entries are provided for each of her performances, with each entry giving cast and credit information, a plot summary, excerpts from reviews, and critical commentary. The book also includes information about recordings of Sheridan's songs, the various awards and honors that she won, and magazine covers on which she appeared. The volume also presents an extensive annotated bibliography of works about Sheridan and lists sources of archival material.

Killer Tomatoes by Ray Hagen,Laura Wagner Pdf

No delicate ingenues, these. In the middle of the twentieth century, the Mary Pickfords of the movie world were replaced by a different sort of woman--drop-dead gorgeous, witty, not afraid to speak their minds, they could slay you with a look--and if that didn't work, look out for the pistol in the garter. These ground-breaking actresses helped change the course of movie history, charting a path for generations to come. These profiles of fifteen leading ladies--Lucille Ball, Lynn Bari, Joan Blondell, Ann Dvorak, Gloria Grahame, Jean Hagen, Adele Jergens, Ida Lupino, Marilyn Maxwell, Mercedes McCambridge, Jane Russell, Ann Sheridan, Barbara Stanwyck, Claire Trevor and Marie Windsor--include overviews of their lives and careers, and excerpts from interviews. Five photos supplement each profile. Jane Russell (one of the actresses profiled) provides a foreword.

Sheridan by Madeleine Bingham Pdf

First published in 1972, Sheridan is primarily a rounded, colourful portrait of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, his triumphs and failures, his ferocious duels and sudden romances, and his rise to oratorical fame in the arena of politics. But it is also something more: a wide canvas – sometimes frightening, sometimes amusing – depicting the extraordinarily turbulent and violent theatrical world of London and Dublin in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when an irate audience could destroy a theatre. In this book, Madeleine Bingham explains why Sheridan relegated to second place that field of activity where his wit and satirical mind could have assured him an even greater measure of immortality, and even more of that money which he always needed and always spent so lavishly. Sheridan, his family and his whole world are vividly brought to life; and while his actions can sometimes be condemned, at other times it is clear that he was a prisoner of his heredity, his upbringing and his family’s past. This book will be of interest to students of history and literature.

Richard Brinsley Sheridan by Jack E. DeRochi,Daniel James Ennis Pdf

This new collection of essays on Richard Brinsley Sheridan brings the most important British playwright of the eighteenth century back to the forefront of literary and cultural studies of the era. While his pyrotechnic life as a romantic hero, playwright, Member of Parliament, and theatre manager has generated a number of recent biographies, it is Sheridan's works--not just plays but also poetry and orations--that endure. These essays reclaim the legacy of the man of letters and partisan bon vivant who burst from obscurity to become a powerful cultural force in Georgian London. This collection covers the many lives of Sheridan, taking into account both his variegated career and the competing accounts of the man, as well as his early verse, which lays the foundation for his success as a playwright. Chapters are devoted to Sheridan's theatre, and provide innovative readings of his most famous dramatic pieces: The Rivals, The Duenna, The School for Scandal, The Critic, and Pizarro. The volume also includes extensive discussion of the dramatic highs of Sheridan's long political career, thus placing the playwright-politician firmly in the world in which performance and politics were inextricably entwined.
