Discovering Evolution Equations with Applications by Mark McKibben Pdf

Most existing books on evolution equations tend either to cover a particular class of equations in too much depth for beginners or focus on a very specific research direction. Thus, the field can be daunting for newcomers to the field who need access to preliminary material and behind-the-scenes detail. Taking an applications-oriented, conversational approach, Discovering Evolution Equations with Applications: Volume 2-Stochastic Equations provides an introductory understanding of stochastic evolution equations. The text begins with hands-on introductions to the essentials of real and stochastic analysis. It then develops the theory for homogenous one-dimensional stochastic ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and extends the theory to systems of homogenous linear stochastic ODEs. The next several chapters focus on abstract homogenous linear, nonhomogenous linear, and semi-linear stochastic evolution equations. The author also addresses the case in which the forcing term is a functional before explaining Sobolev-type stochastic evolution equations. The last chapter discusses several topics of active research. Each chapter starts with examples of various models. The author points out the similarities of the models, develops the theory involved, and then revisits the examples to reinforce the theoretical ideas in a concrete setting. He incorporates a substantial collection of questions and exercises throughout the text and provides two layers of hints for selected exercises at the end of each chapter. Suitable for readers unfamiliar with analysis even at the undergraduate level, this book offers an engaging and accessible account of core theoretical results of stochastic evolution equations in a way that gradually builds readers’ intuition.

Symmetry Problems by Alexander G. Ramm Pdf

This book gives a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of the scattering amplitude for a scatterer to be spherically symmetric. By a scatterer we mean a potential or an obstacle. It also gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a domain to be a ball if an overdetermined boundary problem for the Helmholtz equation in this domain is solvable. This includes a proof of Schiffer's conjecture, the solution to the Pompeiu problem, and other symmetry problems for partial differential equations. It goes on to study some other symmetry problems related to the potential theory. Among these is the problem of "invisible obstacles." In Chapter 5, it provides a solution to the Navier‒Stokes problem in ℝ³. The author proves that this problem has a unique global solution if the data are smooth and decaying sufficiently fast. A new a priori estimate of the solution to the Navier‒Stokes problem is also included. Finally, it delivers a solution to inverse problem of the potential theory without the standard assumptions about star-shapeness of the homogeneous bodies.

Development Of Mathematics Between The World Wars, The: Case Studies, Examples And Analyses by Martina Becvarova Pdf

The Development of Mathematics Between the World Wars traces the transformation of scientific life within mathematical communities during the interwar period in Central and Eastern Europe, specifically in Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. Throughout the book, in-depth mathematical analyses and examples are included for the benefit of the reader.World War I heavily affected academic life. In European countries, many talented researchers and students were killed in action and scientific activities were halted to resume only in the postwar years. However, this inhibition turned out to be a catalyst for the birth of a new generation of mathematicians, for the emergence of new ideas and theories and for the surprising creation of new and outstanding scientific schools. The final four chapters are not restricted to Central and Eastern Europe and deal with the development of mathematics between World War I and World War II. After describing the general state of mathematics at the end of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century, three case studies dealing with selected mathematical disciplines are presented (set theory, potential theory, combinatorics), in a way accessible to a broad audience of mathematicians as well as historians of mathematics.

Polynomial Automorphisms by Arno van den Essen Pdf

Motivated by some notorious open problems, such as the Jacobian conjecture and the tame generators problem, the subject of polynomial automorphisms has become a rapidly growing field of interest. This book, the first in the field, collects many of the results scattered throughout the literature. It introduces the reader to a fascinating subject and brings him to the forefront of research in this area. Some of the topics treated are invertibility criteria, face polynomials, the tame generators problem, the cancellation problem, exotic spaces, DNA for polynomial automorphisms, the Abhyankar-Moh theorem, stabilization methods, dynamical systems, the Markus-Yamabe conjecture, group actions, Hilbert's 14th problem, various linearization problems and the Jacobian conjecture. The work is essentially self-contained and aimed at the level of beginning graduate students. Exercises are included at the end of each section. At the end of the book there are appendices to cover used material from algebra, algebraic geometry, D-modules and Gröbner basis theory. A long list of ''strong'' examples and an extensive bibliography conclude the book.

Operator Theory, Operator Algebras and Their Interactions with Geometry and Topology by Raul E Curto,William Helton,Huaxin Lin,Xiang Tang,Rongwei Yang,Guoliang Yu Pdf

This book is the proceeding of the International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA) held in July 2018 in Shanghai, China. It consists of original papers, surveys and expository articles in the broad areas of operator theory, operator algebras and noncommutative topology. Its goal is to give graduate students and researchers a relatively comprehensive overview of the current status of research in the relevant fields. The book is also a special volume dedicated to the memory of Ronald G. Douglas who passed away on February 27, 2018 at the age of 79. Many of the contributors are Douglas’ students and past collaborators. Their articles attest and commemorate his life-long contribution and influence to these fields.

Classical Analysis in the Complex Plane by Robert B. Burckel Pdf

This authoritative text presents the classical theory of functions of a single complex variable in complete mathematical and historical detail. Requiring only minimal, undergraduate-level prerequisites, it covers the fundamental areas of the subject with depth, precision, and rigor. Standard and novel proofs are explored in unusual detail, and exercises – many with helpful hints – provide ample opportunities for practice and a deeper understanding of the material. In addition to the mathematical theory, the author also explores how key ideas in complex analysis have evolved over many centuries, allowing readers to acquire an extensive view of the subject’s development. Historical notes are incorporated throughout, and a bibliography containing more than 2,000 entries provides an exhaustive list of both important and overlooked works. Classical Analysis in the Complex Plane will be a definitive reference for both graduate students and experienced mathematicians alike, as well as an exemplary resource for anyone doing scholarly work in complex analysis. The author’s expansive knowledge of and passion for the material is evident on every page, as is his desire to impart a lasting appreciation for the subject. “I can honestly say that Robert Burckel’s book has profoundly influenced my view of the subject of complex analysis. It has given me a sense of the historical flow of ideas, and has acquainted me with byways and ancillary results that I never would have encountered in the ordinary course of my work. The care exercised in each of his proofs is a model of clarity in mathematical writing...Anyone in the field should have this book on [their bookshelves] as a resource and an inspiration.”- From the Foreword by Steven G. Krantz
