Excerpt from Annals of British Geology, 1890: A Critical Digest of the Publications and Account of Papers Read During the Year With Personal Items The other features of the work are possibly more question able. It is critical. The ideal of a critical work is to be judicial and, therefore, impersonal. It may be thought that as the ideal cannot be attained, criticism should be entirely avoided. It seems to me, however, that even mistaken criticisms are better than the tameness of none, and when they are just they may be of positive value to the student. Moreover, as some selection of the contents of any paper must necessarily be made, it must be left to the recorder's judgment what are of importance and what may be passed by, and this is, in itself, of the nature of criticism. When, too, things which might be expected are not found in the original, this must be indicated, lest it should be thought that they have been omitted by the recorder. When the state ments actually made appear to be obviously erroneous or inconsistent, if they are not ignored as they would be in reading, the error and the reason why it is so must be pointed out, in order that either the statement or the record of it may be corrected by the authors, if they will only take the matter in good part.
