Irish, Catholic and Scouse by John Belchem Pdf

Liverpool in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was the mirror of Ellis Island: it acted as the great cultural melting pot and processing point of migration from Europe to the United States. Here, for the first time, acclaimed historian John Belchem offers an extensive and groundbreaking social history of the elements of the Irish diaspora that stayed in Liverpool—enriching the city’s cultural mix rather than continuing on their journey. Covering the tumultuous period from the Act of Union to the supposed “final settlement” between Britain and Ireland, this richly illustrated volume will be required reading for anyone interested in the Irish diaspora.

The Dublin Stage, 1720-1745 by John C. Greene,Gladys L. H. Clark Pdf

"The Dublin Stage, 1720-1745 is a comprehensive documentary history and calendar of Dublin Ireland's theatres from 1720, the year of Joseph Ashbury's death, to 1745, when Thomas Sheridan assumed the management of the united Smock Alley/Aungier Street companies and ushered in the "Golden Age" of early Dublin theatre. During the eighteenth century, Dublin was second only to London in the number of theatres it supported and in the number and quality of productions. Winner of Lehigh University Press's eighteenth-century studies prize, this work details for the first time evidence of nearly 1,400 stage performances in eight competing theatres and theatrical booths and hundreds of performers, many previously unnoticed. Programs are listed in a detailed calendar, which is organized by theatrical season and provides a day-by-day account of the plays, afterpieces, dances, music, and songs that were performed, as well as the many other forms of entertainment that were staged at the public theatres, such as rope-dancing, animal acts, and equilibres." "The actors who performed and their named roles are listed, as well as the recipients of benefits, the titles of all songs, dances, and other entr'acte entertainments. Each entry also incorporates all available contemporary commentary about each performance, financial information, and supplies locations of rare texts." "In the analytical introduction to the calendar, the authors discuss the physical characteristics and locations of the theatres; their acoustics and capacities; the Dublin theatre season; composition, administration, and management of the companies of performers; management styles and techniques; actors' contractual arrangements, conditions, and salaries; ticket prices; benefit and command performances; the composition of the repertory; costumes, scenery, wardrobe, and machinery, and much else. Special attention is paid to areas that have been neglected by previous histories, such as dance and dancers, and prologues and epilogues." "In addition to a general index, The Dublin Stage, 1720-1745 provides indexes of all mainpieces and afterpieces performed during the period in Dublin, cross-referenced with the venue and date of performance; an author/play index; and an alphabetical listing of all personnel associated with the Dublin stage at this time, as well as a selected bibliography." "Incorporating into their book the work of recent eighteenth-century theatre scholarship, the authors bring to light much that is new about a fascinating period of theatre history and greatly expand our knowledge about the plays and entertainments enjoyed by Dublin audiences, and about the identities of the stage personnel active in Dublin."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Entertainment, Leisure and Identities by Alyson Brown Pdf

This wide-ranging collection of essays seeks to challenge the ‘common-sense’ assumption that entertainment activities have no function but to fill up otherwise empty moments. As such it builds on the term – coined by the Victorians – ‘Recreation’, and argues that in the entertainments people pursue they do not simply divert themselves, but actively create and re-create their identities. The collection shows this process can only take place for those who enjoy the benefits of leisure; hence, in the medieval period leisure and entertainments are largely confined to the wealthy minority. In periods of rapid social change, like 19th century Britain, the inter-linked question of identity and entertainment became an issue of great concern. Orderly and respectable activities were seen by many commentators as the key to containing the potential menace of the new urban population. In the 20th century the development of new forms of mass entertainment, such as cinema, radio and television, has generated new debates, in particular about the potential of these new media to manipulate their audiences. The essays, arranged in broadly chronological order, give fascinating and detailed ‘snapshots’ of these processes as they unfold from the middle ages to the present-day. As such the collection makes a very valuable contribution to the historical study of the social and, broadly defined, political role played by entertainments in shaping and reinforcing identities. 'In recent years the history of leisure and, more particularly, the history of leisure pursuits, amusements and "entertainments", has engaged the attention of social historians who, as well as highlighting their intrinsic interests, have demonstrated the contribution which such studies can make to an understanding on social identities and class relationships. This collection of essays explores a wide and eclectic range of "entertainments" - from medieval pet-keeping, Victorian chess tournaments and late 19th century museums of curiosities to French anarchist theatre and the career of Harry Belafonte - themes which until now received little or no scholarly analysis. As such it fills a significant gap in the historical literature.' G. R. Searle, Emeritus Prof. of History, University of East Anglia and Fellow of the British Academy

Gordon Stretton, Black British Transoceanic Jazz Pioneer by Michael Brocken,Jeff Daniels Pdf

This extensively researched text concerning the life and career of Liverpool-born Black jazz musician Gordon Stretton not only contributes to the important debate concerning the transoceanic pathways of jazz during the 20th century, but also suggests to the jazz fan and scholar alike that such pathways, reaching as they also did across the Atlantic from Europe, are actually part of a largely ignored therefore partially-hidden history of 20th century jazz performance, industry and influence. The work also exists to contribute to a more complete picture of the significance of diaspora studies across the spectrum of popular music performance, and to award to those Liverpool musicians who were not contributors to the city’s musical visage post-rock ‘n’ roll, a place in popular music history. Gordon Stretton was a jazz pioneer in several senses: he emerged from a poverty-stricken, racially marginalized upbringing in Liverpool to develop a popular music career emblematic of Black diasporan experience. He was a child dancer and singer in the Lancashire Lads (the troupe which was also part of a young Charlie Chaplin’s development), a well-respected solo touring artist in the UK as ‘The Natural Artistic Coon’, a chorister and musical director with the Jamaican Choral Union and, having encountered syncopated music, a jazz percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist (not to mention a ground-breaking bandleader). All of these musical experiences took place through time on his own terms as he learnt his craft ‘on the hoof’ via many different encounters with musical genres from Liverpool to London, Paris, Brussels, Rio, and Buenos Aires. Gordon Stretton was truly a transoceanic jazz pioneer.
