This History of King Herod the Great begins with Antipater of Idumaea, the father of Herod, and Antipater's political relationship with Hyrcanus (II) Maccabaeus, High Priest and King of Judaea, circa 67 B.C., and this History of King Herod the Great ends in 4 B.C., at the death of King Herod. This history is abridged from Books XIV-XVII of The Antiquities of the Jews, which unabridged contains XX Books, written by Flavius Josephus, the Jewish author and historian who lived in the first Christian century. The editor of this abridgement has very frequently corrected typographical errors found in the original source text, and revised the spelling of some words, and occasionally changed the English translation of some words. Very much more frequently there are clarifications written by the editor of this Antiquities abridgement, clarifications which are added, in parentheses (&), to the original text written by Josephus and translated by William Whiston. Many of these clarifications are (proper names), added to the original text indefinite pronouns, or implied pronouns. Many other clarifications are added in parentheses (&) by the editor in order to explain definitions of some words, or to add a few words of historical details, or to improve the grammar of the English language translation text. The editor has occasionally added, in some chronological locations within the text, modern year dates within parentheses.
