Anything Goes by Lucy Moore Pdf

“A fast-paced portrait of the twentieth-century’s fizziest decade, replete with gangsters, flappers, speakeasies and jazz” (Kirkus Reviews). The glitter of 1920s America was seductive, from jazz, flappers, and wild all-night parties to the birth of Hollywood and a glamorous gangster-led crime scene flourishing under Prohibition. But the period was also punctuated by momentous events-the political show trials of Sacco and Vanzetti, the huge Ku Klux Klan march down Washington DC’s Pennsylvania Avenue-and it produced a dizzying array of writers, musicians, and film stars, from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Bessie Smith and Charlie Chaplin. In Anything Goes, Lucy Moore interweaves the stories of the compelling people and events that characterized the decade to produce a gripping portrait of the Jazz Age. She reveals that the Roaring Twenties were more than just “the years between wars.” It was an epoch of passion and change—an age, she observes, not unlike our own. “A varied and dazzling portrait gallery of crooks and film stars, boxers and presidents, each brilliantly delineated and colored in by a historian with a novelist’s relish for human foibles.” —The Sunday Times (London) “Mesmerizing . . . Like the champagne-immersed age she portrays, Moore’s book effervesces with the detail of this fascinating story.” —Juliet Nicholson, Evening Standard (UK) “What a decade it was! What goings-on more violent, subversive and exotic than any of the parties, japes or shenanigans of our own Bright Young Things . . . Moore has knitted the various diverse strands together impressively with an overview of the large cast of characters, events, attitudes, industries and statistics.” —Anne de Courcy, Daily Mail (UK) “Full of anecdote, detail and color. . . . Fluid and elegant.” —Marianne Brace, Independent (UK)

Anything Goes by Brian Gallagher Pdf

"Neysa McMein epitomized the Jazz Age flapper: beautiful, rich, and socially prominent. However, unlike many women of the Twenties, she also earned her own living, working successfully as an illustrator. Noted for her parties, social life, and unconventional marriage (she and her husband enjoyed what we today would call an open marriage), Neysa's life was never dull. She entertained all the notables of the time, including Noel Coward, Harpo Marx, Helen Hayes, George Gershwin, as well as the members of the Algonquin Round Table. In this carefully researched biography, Gallagher provides an amusing and informative portrait of Neysa and her crowd, offering considerable insight into their lives and loves. Nancy R. Anything Goes by Kevin Everett FitzMaurice Pdf

This book is a compilation of sayings useful to understanding Eastern thought and General Semantics. The agreement between General Semantics and Eastern philosophy is profound, illuminating, and deepens the understanding of both. For instance, the expressions, “The description is not the described,” and, “The thought is not the thing,” are found in both Eastern philosophy and General Semantics. Both systems arrive at reality as nonverbal, silent, and beyond comprehension with thought. This despite the fact that one is spiritual and one is atheistic. Two entirely different approaches arriving at the same ultimate conclusions is exciting and enlightening. You will find the sayings herein amusing, helpful, interesting, and thought provoking. Let the sayings pass that don’t open to you now. Focus on the sayings that bring stillness. Listen beyond the words. Feel, rather than think, the sayings through. Sense, rather than think, the music behind the words.

Anything Goes by Richard S. Wheeler Pdf

Anything Goes: the enchanting story of a vaudeville troupe that makes its way to Western mining towns, from renowned master of the Western novel, Richard S. Wheeler. The cowboys, gold miners, outlaws, gunmen, prostitutes, and marshals who populate the Wild West never see much big-city entertainment. Most towns are too wild and rowdy for entertainers to enter, let alone perform in. All that is about to change. August Beausoleil and his colleague, Charles Pomerantz, have taken the Beausoleil Brothers Follies to the remote mining towns of Montana, far from the powerful impresarios who own the talent and control the theaters on the big vaudeville circuits. Their cast includes a collection of has-beens and second-tier performers: Mary Mabel Markey, the shopworn singer now a little out of breath; Wayne Windsor, "The Profile," who favors his audiences with just one side of his face while needling them with acerbic dialogue; Harry the Juggler, who went from tossing teacups to tossing scimitars; Mrs. McGivers and her capuchin monkey band; and the Wildroot Sisters, born to show business and managed by a stage mother who drives August mad. Though the towns are starved for entertainment, the Follies struggles to fill seats as the show grinds from town to town. Just when the company is desperate for fresh talent, a mysterious young woman astonishes everyone with her exquisite voice. The Wild West will never be the same. They've seen comics, gorgeous singers, and scimitar-tossing jugglers. Now if the troupers can only make it back East . . . alive! ANYTHING GOES by MARTIN DeC HAYNES F.R.C.S Pdf

Anything Goes is an unusual and a hilarious collection of short stories by the author Martin Dec Haynes F.R.C.S. who is also a poet, a surgeon, golfer, philatelist and humorist. Because of the author’s vast working experience lots of his stories have a medical theme, but you can rest assured that, coming from Haynes, they are not run-of-the-mill, nay rather they are extremely esoteric and virtually beyond belief. Near the end of the book the writing style takes a detour and a few yarns are narrated as if by idiot types who misspell words, or some of the words are written as they are pronounced, adding greatly to the farcical effect. The last story is about a young man who leaves his wife behind in The Islands, and goes to London to study medicine successfully; then he divorces his island-wife from a distance and takes a spanking new English wife. He is now about to return to his native island but his grandfather is waiting at the airport with a shotgun to blow out his brains. Fortunately, other family members are able to avert the disaster. All in all the collection is a riproaring read.

Anything Goes by John Barrowman Pdf

Anything Goes traces the life and career of John Barrowman, from his Glaswegian childhood and American adolescence to his first big break starring alongside Elaine Paige in Anything Goes. Since then, John has made a name for himself with outstanding West End achievements, including an Olivier Award nomination, and success in the movies The Producers and De-Lovely. His triumphant transition into television was confirmed when Torchwood won a Best Drama BAFTA. After an intense fourteen-day courtship, she moves into his apartment. For Dianne, the first three months of their relationship is sheer bliss, a series of Hollywood banquets, parties, and hilarious housekeeping. Dianne learns the meaning of celebrity. Only references to ex-wife Rita Hayworth mar her excitement and break the spell. The two lovers are confident, in spite of Richard's health and financial problems, ex wives, and drinking. A second chance has been granted to them. Dianne flies to Detroit for the closing night of the Big Broadcast of 1944 with Harry James, starring Dick Haymes. Sitting on the edge of her seat in the audience, Dianne realizes Haymes has been drinking to find the strength to go on stage. The last song he ever sings is for her-:"The More I See You." Haymes tells the press from his hosipital bed when asked if he is ready to go, "I've had it all, known everybody, had everything except love. Now I have that, too." He glances at Dianne who is devastated. The morning after his death, she finds a single red rose wrapped in baby's breath on her doorstep with a card-"In Memory of Love." She knows it's from Haymes, who guides Dianne to Hawaii, Alaska, and Findhorn, Scotland. She learns life does exist after death and unconditional love lasts forever.
