Principles of Teaching (Classic Reprint) by Nathan A. Harvey Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Teaching Some men need to apologize for living, and the preface of a book is frequently in the nature of an apology for its existence. Whether a book needs an apology or not. it is sometimes advantageous to a reader to know the author's point of view, and what he expects the book to accomplish. Of the five hundred thousand teachers in the United States, about one hundred thousand are teaching their first term of school this year. Of this one hundred thousand, scarcely more than ten thousand have had any professional training, or have given to the subject of teaching any serious preliminary thought that could be called professional study. The professional aspect of the work must be presented to them after the work of teaching has been entered upon. In the hope that it may contribute somewhat to the realization that there is a professional aspect of teaching, and a body of educational doctrine worth while for a teacher to know, this volume is sent forth. The book has grown out of the attempt to give to young persons preparing to teach the largest amount of professional knowledge in the shortest possible time. This necessarily involves the selection of somewhat isolated topics, rather than a closely integrated body of educational doctrine. Christian Education: Its History and Philosophy by Kenneth O. Gangel,Warren S. Benson Pdf

ÒA history of Christian education must not be confused with a record of the achievements of the Sunday School. The discipline has advanced well beyond that stage, and today's sophisticated students fully understand that no proper concept of the history and philosophy of Christian education can be gained without seeing all the ramifications, implications, and influences that have affected it from pre-Christian times to the present.Ó So Drs. Gangel and Benson have written this book, a historical flow of philisophical thought from a Christian point of view. Its focus is cultural-biographical, discussing each philosophy in its particular socio-historical setting, and giving special attention to significant individuals. The format is chronological, beginning with education in biblical times, working upward through history to arrive at the present - and beyond, raising questions and issues for the future.

True Principles by A.W. Pugin,Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin Pdf

True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture was first published in 1841, when Pugin was 29 years old. Here he presents coherent arguments for the revival of the Gothic style, the case for which he had made pictorally in his sensational book Contrasts (1836). For Pugin, the Gothic Revival was 'not a style, but a principle' and this he laid down in his most influential architectural treatise, True Principles, which introduced functionalist and rationalist as well as moral criteria into architectural discourse, much of it still resonant in the twentieth-century Modern Movement. It is reprinted together with his Apology for the Revival of Christian Architecture, first printed in 1843. Much of his thought here is on architectural education, and in shuffling off the straitjacket of neoclassical architectural principles Pugin exercised a great influence in mid-Victorian architecture and the applied arts, and in a wider design reform movement. These two seminal books, presented in one volume, are introduced by the architectural historian and Pugin authority Dr Roderick O'Donnell
