APPARENT HEIRS Lady Catherine Gordon was born to George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly and his Countess Elizabeth Hay. He was the High Chancellor of Scotland, and with that title and position, came influence. That influence served the family well, as her cousin, King James IV of Scotland needed to ally himself with a claimant to the throne of England. In this story, Lady Catherine has arrived at a time of matched marriages, dowries, forged political ties, alliances, and anticipated heirs. She finds herself on the cusp of royal title, wealth, and political elevation, only to end up seemingly lost in the annals of history. Was her betrothed truly one of the lost `Princes in the Tower' - Richard of Shrewsbury or was he indeed a pretender dubbed `Perkin Warbeck' by King Henry VII? Travel back in time and discover the perils of a Scottish lass who sought to live, love, and leave her mark on the world. This is a tale of courage, faith, and the strength of one woman and her family.

The Heir Apparent Presidency by Donald A. Zinman Pdf
It was during the Depression, with the Republican regime in disarray, that Franklin D. Roosevelt came into office with a mandate to change the role of government. His was one of the presidencies—like Jefferson's, Jackson's, and Lincoln's before his, and Reagan's after—that transformed the political system. But what of the successors of such transformative figures, those members and supporters of the new regime who are expected to carry forward the policies and politics of those they replace? It is these "heir apparent" presidents, impossibly tasked with backward-looking progress, that Donald Zinman considers in this incisive look at the curious trajectories of political power. An heir apparent president, in Zinman's analysis, can be successful but will struggle to get credit for his achievements. He must contend with the consequences of his predecessor's policies while facing a stronger opposition and sitting atop an increasingly weakened and divided party. And he will invariably alternate between three approaches to leadership: continuity, expansion, and correction. Looking in depth at James Madison, Martin Van Buren, Ulysses S. Grant (an heir apparent as the first genuine Republican to succeed Lincoln), Harry S. Truman, and George H. W. Bush, Zinman reveals how these successors of regime-changing presidents at times suffered for diverging from their predecessors' perceived policies. At times these presidents also suffered from the consequences of the policies themselves or simply from changing political circumstances. What they rarely did, as becomes painfully clear, is succeed at substantially changing the policies and politics that they inherited. It is a perilous and often thankless business, as The Heir Apparent Presidency makes abundantly clear, to follow and lead at once. Tracing the ways in which heir apparent presidents have met this challenge, this book offers rare and valuable insight into the movement of political time, and the shaping of political order.
Heirs Apparent is typical of Gibb's fiction in that it explores a problem taken from the headlines-in this case, Youth-and begins with scenes designed to worry the typical serious and concerned liberal reader. Young men at Oxford are wasting their time in drunken parties and stunts. Julian, the hero, is on his final warning, and decides to leave the University before being sent down. His (platonic) girl friend Audrey actually is sent down, for coming back to college late (and destroying a fellow-student's property when clambering in at a window). Breezily, Julian decides that he has had enough of education, and wants to dedicate himself to Literature (so he begins to write a verse drama). Gradually the events of the novel teach him that life is serious and earnest, and that enterprises begun in fun can end in pain. -George Simmer's Blog

A young man returns to London from the family plantation in the Caribbean after an absence of six years to be at his father’s deathbed – and to inherit his estate. With their investigations leading them into the complicated world of inheritance law and due process after death, Constable Sam Plank and his loyal lieutenant William Wilson come face to face with the death trade and those who profit from it – legally or otherwise.
