Advances in Urban Flood Management by Richard Ashley,Stephen Garvin,Erik Pasche,Andreas Vassilopoulos,Chris Zevenbergen Pdf

One of the effects of global climate change is the increasing variability of extreme flood events and cyclones. Current measures to mitigate flood impacts, particularly in the urban environment, are based on previously-planned flood risk intervals and no longer provide sufficient protection. Being prepared for unexpected changes and extreme flood events asks for a paradigm shift in current strategies to avoid and manage flood disasters. In order to stem the increasing impact of urban floods, a major rethink of current planning and flood management policies and practice is required, taking into account different spatial and temporal scales. This book addresses a broad spectrum of relevant issues in the emerging field of urban flood management. It may act as a stimulus for further research and development in urban flood management while informing and engaging stakeholders in the promotion of integrated and cooperative approaches in water management. An interdisciplinary approach which will be of interest to all those who are active in water, risk and urban management.

Two-dimensional Floodplain Modeling by D. Michael Gee,M. G. Anderson,Laura Baird Pdf

A two-dimensional horizontal finite element numerical model (RMA-2) was applied to a 15 mile (24 km) river channel-floodplain reach in West Germany. Previous applications of such models have been restricted to much smaller scales. The results indicate that finite element schemes may successfully estimate river stage in large scale floodplain applications. Computed stage hydrographs compared well with observed data using loss coefficients within expected ranges. Two-dimensional flow models have been applied to certain classes of river channel problems. Applications have included detailed analyses of flow patterns near structures such as bridges and floodplains. In all these problems the scale of interest has been small, e.g. reaches of river a few river widths long. Many estuary studies have been done that were of large scale; some of these utilized a hybrid (numerical plus physical) modeling technique. In a review of the application of finite element methods to river channels, Samuels reported that the river channel was resolved separately from the floodplain in only two studies. Missing in previous work is attention to large scale floodplain modeling. The work reported in this paper focuses on the feasibility and accuracy of applying a two-dimensional flow model to a large floodplain. Traditional floodplain studies have used semi-empirical flow routing with steady, one-dimensional computation of water surface elevations to define inundated areas. Keywords: Army Corps of Engines. Numerical Simulation of Viscous Shock Layer Flows by Y.P. Golovachov Pdf

The book is concerned with mathematical modelling of supersonic and hyper sonic flows about bodies. Permanent interest in this topic is stimulated, first of all, by aviation and aerospace engineering. The designing of aircraft and space vehicles requires a more precise prediction of the aerodynamic and heat transfer characteristics. Together with broadening of the flight condition range, this makes it necessary to take into account a number of gas dynamic and physical effects caused by rarefaction, viscous-inviscid interaction, separation, various physical and chemical processes induced by gas heating in the intensive bow shock wave. The flow field around a body moving at supersonic speed can be divided into three parts, namely, shock layer, near wake including base flow, and far wake. The shock layer flow is bounded by the bow shock wave and the front and lat eral parts of the body surface. A conventional approach to calculation of shock layer flows consists in a successive solution of the inviscid gas and boundary layer equations. When the afore-mentioned effects become important, implementation of these models meets difficulties or even becomes impossible. In this case, one has to use a more general approach based on the viscous shock layer concept.

IUTAM Symposium on Numerical Simulation of Non-Isothermal Flow of Viscoelastic Liquids by J.F. Dijksman,G.D.C. Kuiken Pdf

During the last decades a considerable effort has been made on the computation of the isothermal flow of viscoelastic fluids. In fact the activities related to this particular field of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics have focused on the following questions: which type of constitutive equation describes non-Newtonian fluid behaviour; how to measure fluid parameters; and what type of computational scheme leads to reliable, stable and cost-effective computer programs. During the same period, typical non-Newtonian fluid phenomena have been experimentally examined, such as the flow through a `four-to-one' contraction, the flow around a sphere or separation flow, providing fresh challenges for numerical modellers. Apart from momentum transport, however, fluid flow is strongly influenced by heat treansport in most real industrial operations in which non-Newtonian fluids are processed. The IUTAM Symposium on `Numerical Simulation of Nonisothermal Flow of Viscoelastic Liquids' held at Rolduc Abbey in Kerkrade, the Netherlands, November 1--3, 1993, was organised to monitor the state of affairs in regard to the influence of nonisothermal effects on the flow of a viscoelastic liquid. The present collection of papers gives an overview of what has been achieved so far. It is a milestone in the rapidly emerging and exciting new field in non-Newtonian fluid mechanics.

Integrating Disaster Science and Management by Pijush Samui,Dookie Kim,Chandan Ghosh Pdf

Integrated Disaster Science and Management: Global Case Studies in Mitigation and Recovery bridges the gap between scientific research on natural disasters and the practice of disaster management. It examines natural hazards, including earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis, and uses integrated disaster management techniques, quantitative methods and big data analytics to create early warning models to mitigate impacts of these hazards and reduce the risk of disaster. It also looks at mitigation as part of the recovery process after a disaster, as in the case of the Nepal earthquake. Edited by global experts in disaster management and engineering, the book offers case studies that focus on the critical phases of disaster management. Identifies advanced techniques and models based on natural disaster science for forecasting disasters and analyzing risk Offers a holistic approach to the problem of disaster management, including preparation, recovery, and resilience Includes coverage of social, economic, and environmental impacts on disasters

Introduction to the Numerical Modeling of Groundwater and Geothermal Systems by Jochen Bundschuh,Mario César Suárez A. Pdf

This book provides an introduction to the scientific fundamentals of groundwater and geothermal systems. In a simple and didactic manner the different water and energy problems existing in deformable porous rocks are explained as well as the corresponding theories and the mathematical and numerical tools that lead to modeling and solving them. This approach provides the reader with a thorough understanding of the basic physical laws of thermoporoelastic rocks, the partial differential equations representing these laws and the principal numerical methods, which allow finding approximate solutions of the corresponding mathematical models. The book also presents the form in which specific useful models can be generated and solved. The text is introductory in the sense that it explains basic themes of the systems mentioned in three areas: engineering, physics and mathematics. All the laws and equations introduced in this book are formulated carefully based on fundamental physical principles. This way, the reader will understand the key importance of mathematics applied to all the subjects. Simple models are emphasized and solved with numerous examples. For more sophisticated and advanced models the numerical techniques are described and developed carefully. This book will serve as a synoptic compendium of the fundamentals of fluid, solute and heat transport, applicable to all types of subsurface systems, ranging from shallow aquifers down to deep geothermal reservoirs. The book will prove to be a useful textbook to senior undergraduate and graduate students, postgraduates, professional geologists and geophysicists, engineers, mathematicians and others working in the vital areas of groundwater and geothermal resources.
