Special Topics by H. S. W. Massey,E. W. McDaniel,B. Bederson Pdf

Applied Atomic Collision Physics, Volume 5: Special Topics deals with topics on applications of atomic collisions that were not covered in the first four volumes of the treatise. The book opens with a chapter on ultrasensitive chemical detectors. This is followed by separate chapters on lighting, magnetohydrodynamic electrical power generation, gas breakdown and high voltage insulating gases, thermionic energy converters, and charged particle detectors. Subsequent chapters deal with the operation of multiwire drift and proportional chambers and streamer chambers and their use in high energy physics experiments; photoelectron spectroscopy of negative ions and the chemical information that can be obtained from such studies; and the determination of intermolecular potentials. Also discussed are studies on the determination of ion molecular potential curves using photodissociative processes; determination of negative ion thermo chemical data using ion-neutral reactions; gas-phase chemical reactions; collision phenomena in electrical discharge lamps; and military applications of atomic and molecular physics.

Topics in Atomic Collision Theory by Sydney Geltman Pdf

Topics in Atomic Collision Theory originated in a course of graduate lectures given at the University of Colorado and at University College in London. It is recommended for students in physics and related fields who are interested in the application of quantum scattering theory to low-energy atomic collision phenomena. No attention is given to the electromagnetic, nuclear, or elementary particle domains. The book is organized into three parts: static field scattering, electron-atom collisions, and atom-atom collisions. These are in the order of increasing physical complexity and hence necessarily in the order of decreasing mathematical tractability. The topics and methods selected were those which contributed most significantly to the understanding of the physics and the calculation of reliable cross sections. The attempt has been made to treat each of the sections in a complete and self-contained manner. The limited scope of this book has unfortunately made it necessary to omit discussion of many promising methods.

Applied Atomic Collision Physics by H.S.W. Massey Pdf

Applied Atomic Collision Physics, Volume 1: Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry focuses on the applications of atomic collision physics in atmospheric physics and chemistry. The emphasis is on the physics of the upper atmospheres of the earth and planets as well as astrophysics, including solar physics, the physics of planetary nebulae, and reactions in interstellar space. Comprised of 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the structure of the earth's atmosphere and its environment in interplanetary space, along with the structure of the terrestrial atmosphere at middle latitudes. The discussion then turns to the photochemistry of the midlatitude ionosphere; the thermal balance in the thermosphere at middle latitudes; atomic collisions in the lower ionosphere at midlatitudes; and airglow and auroras. Subsequent chapters explore the high latitude ionosphere, the exosphere, and the magnetosphere; the ionospheres of the planets and other bodies of the solar system; atmospheric processes involved in the stratospheric ozone problem; and solar physics. The final two chapters are concerned with applications to the physics of planetary nebulae and interstellar space. This book will be of interest to physicists and chemists.

Swarm Studies and Inelastic Electron-Molecule Collisions by Leanne C. Pitchford,B. Vincent McKoy,Ara Chutjian,Sandar Trajmar Pdf

This volume presents the contributions of participants in the Symposium on Swarm Studies and Inelastic Electron-Molecule Collisions, held on July 19-23, 1985, in Tahoe City, California. This was a joint meeting of the Fourth International Swarm Seminar and the Electron-Molecule Collisions Symposium which have been traditionally separate satellite symposia to the International Conference on the Physics of Electronic and Atomic Collisions (ICPEAC). In the early stages of planning for these two satellite symposia to the XIVth ICPEAC, a group of us recognized the significant scientific merit and advantages of having a joint symposium. This idea was particularly appealing due to a large mutual interest in important advances (theoretical, experimental, and modeling) in both fields, and because it provides a forum to bring together a single-collision point of view with a multiple-collision one. For example, studies of multiple-term solutions to Boltzmann's equation and their application to swarm systems are intrinsically coupled to the availability of both integral and differential cross-sections for electron-molecule collisions. In tum, experimental and theoretical studies of these electron-molecule scattering cross-sections are becoming quite sophisticated, accurate, and comprehensive. Furthermore, in swarm studies, computational and experimental methods have advanced to the point where detailed and meaningful comparison with, and use of, single-collision beam data is now possible. More over, recent experimental advances in the study of single-collision electron at tachment phenomena have provided a significant overlap with swarm data and extension to subthermal energies.

Plasmas by C. F. Barnett,M. F. A. Harrison Pdf

Applied Atomic Collision Physics, Volume 2: Plasmas covers topics on magnetically confined plasmas. The book starts by providing the history of fusion research and describing the various approaches in both magnetically and inertially confined plasmas. The text then gives a general discussion of the basic concepts and properties in confinement and heating of a plasma. The theory of atomic collisions that result in excited quantum states, particularly highly ionized impurity atoms; and diverse diagnostic topics such as emission spectra, laser scattering, electron cyclotron emission, particle beams, and bremsstrahlung are also considered. The book further tackles heating of plasma by energetic particles; the boundary or edge plasma and particle-surface interactions; and the role of atomic physics in hot dense plasmas. Physicists and people involved in plasma and fusion energy studies will find the book invaluable.

Electron—Molecule Interactions and Their Applications by L. G. Christophorou Pdf

Electron-Molecule Interactions and Their Applications, Volume 2 provides a balanced and comprehensive account of electron-molecule interactions in dilute and dense gases and liquid media. This book consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 deals with electron transfer reactions, while Chapter 2 discusses electron-molecular positive-ion recombination. The electron motion in high-pressure gases and electron-molecule interactions from single- to multiple-collision conditions is deliberated in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, knowledge on electron-molecule interactions in gases is linked to that on similar processes in the liquid state. Selected examples on the translation of the results of basic research on electron-molecule interactions to application are reviewed in Chapter 5. The last chapter covers the electron affinity of molecules, atoms, and radicals. This volume is a good reference for students and researchers conducting work on the intricate ways electrons and molecules interact in their encounters.

Encyclopedia of Chemical Physics and Physical Chemistry by John H. Moore,Nicholas D. Spencer Pdf

The Encyclopedia of Physical Chemistry and Chemical Physics introduces possibly unfamiliar areas, explains important experimental and computational techniques, and describes modern endeavors. The encyclopedia quickly provides the basics, defines the scope of each subdiscipline, and indicates where to go for a more complete and detailed explanation. Particular attention has been paid to symbols and abbreviations to make this a user-friendly encyclopedia. Care has been taken to ensure that the reading level is suitable for the trained chemist or physicist. The encyclopedia is divided in three major sections: FUNDAMENTALS: the mechanics of atoms and molecules and their interactions, the macroscopic and statistical description of systems at equilibrium, and the basic ways of treating reacting systems. The contributions in this section assume a somewhat less sophisticated audience than the two subsequent sections. At least a portion of each article inevitably covers material that might also be found in a modern, undergraduate physical chemistry text. METHODS: the instrumentation and fundamental theory employed in the major spectroscopic techniques, the experimental means for characterizing materials, the instrumentation and basic theory employed in the study of chemical kinetics, and the computational techniques used to predict the static and dynamic properties of materials. APPLICATIONS: specific topics of current interest and intensive research. For the practicing physicist or chemist, this encyclopedia is the place to start when confronted with a new problem or when the techniques of an unfamiliar area might be exploited. For a graduate student in chemistry or physics, the encyclopedia gives a synopsis of the basics and an overview of the range of activities in which physical principles are applied to chemical problems. It will lead any of these groups to the salient points of a new field as rapidly as possible and gives pointers as to where to read about the topic in more detail.

Atomic Collisions and Spectra by U Fano Pdf

Atomic Collisions and Spectra provides an overview of the state of knowledge on atomic collision physics. The book grew out of lecture notes for a succession of courses at the University of Chicago in 1967-1979, which reported the new material as it was taking a definite form. It has been enriched since 1980, as the subject matured and continued to expand. The book is organized into four parts. Part A deals briefly with rather elementary items of general information. Part B then takes up in considerable detail those aspects of single-electron scattering whose mastery is essential for treating multielectron processes. Part C deals with multielectron processes with a residual—if often realistic—restriction, namely, that the multielectron interactions remain confined within a core region from which only a single electron escapes into alternative channels of a long-range field. Part D surveys studies of double (or multiple) escape of electrons from a core. The book is intended for multiple use as a graduate school text, a tool for independent study, or a reference for particular topics.
