Approaching the Cosmos Hotel is a compendium of travels, an odyssey through much of the world over many years, a memoir that explores events, cultures, gastronomy, architecture and art through the critical lens of a man who doesn't take himself too seriously. Robert Champ's experiences humorously expose the fools, hypocrites and outr characters he encounters: out-of-their-element expats in Mexico and Spain, tourists in Russia or China who might better have stayed home, rigid officialdom everywhere. Fascinating landscapes and personalities limn these pages, and the armchair adventurer seeking an unconventional narrative will have no trouble finding it here.
In Book 3 of the trilogy “The Baines Saga,” hotel magnate Graf von Lemke finances the wedding of his adopted protégés Zav Baines and Judi Peake in Australia before flying with them to his hotel in Bavaria. Employed as hotel musicians under the names Giuseppe and Giulia Cantatore and acting as undercover ambassadors for the von Lemke empire, they discover a Neo-Nazi plot to firebomb a Munich discothèque. Despite them working against the clock to avert a double tragedy, a political rally is attacked, leaving many dead. During this, their cover is blown and von Lemke pulls them out and sends them to his Marbella Spa. Here a series of shocking events leads them to Gibraltar and North Africa, where a merciless adversary condemns them to what seems certain death.

Postmodern Approaches to the Short Story by Farhat Iftekharrudin,Joseph Boyden,Joseph Longo,Mary Rohrberger Pdf
Postmodernism, as a mode of the contemporary short story, has been clearly established and recognized by short story theorists. But postmodern theory, as pervasive as it has become among academics in the last half century, has scarcely been applied to the short story genre in particular. Many contemporary scholars, nonetheless, are currently making use of certain postmodern thematic approaches to help them determine meanings of particular short stories. T Short story theory began with Edgar Allan Poe's review of Twice-Told Tales, a collection of stories by his contemporary, Nathaniel Hawthorne. But theoretical discussions of the short story languished until modernism and the new criticism provided impetus for further development. Surprisingly, though, the next large critical movement, postmodernism, failed to address the short story as a genre. But while there is little postmodern theory concerning the short story, contemporary scholars have used certain postmodern critical approaches to help determine meaning. This book demonstrates the effect of postmodern theory on the study of the short story genre. The expert contributors to this volume examine such topics as genre and form, the role of the reader, cultural and ethnic diversity, and feminist perspectives on the short story. In doing so, they apply postmodern theoretical approaches to international short stories, be they in the traditional mode, the modern mode, or the postmodern mode. The volume looks at fiction by Edith Wharton, Henry James, Katherine Mansfield, and other authors, and at Iranian short fiction, the postcolonial short story, the fantastic in short fiction, and other subjects.
From Hayseed to Jet Pilot and Beyond by Johnny Clark Pdf
From Hayseed to Jet Pilot and Beyond was written after prompting from the author's children, relatives, and friends to write a book about his colorful life experiences. Initial tales recount life on a small Iowa farm in the 30's. Johnny relates how his life was "forever changed" by World War II with his aspirations of becoming a pilot fulfilled by entering the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet program. After the War, he remained in the Air Force as a military pilot, flying over 20 types of planes. With humorous insight he recounts his adventures in many countries and describes his part in making history in the eras of World War II, the Berlin Airlift, NATO, and the Cold War. After retirement from the Air Force, Johnny began a new career as an economic development executive with Northern Natural Gas Company in Omaha. In this position, he called on some of the most senior executives of companies throughout the U.S., promoting the northern plains as a place to do business. New Vampire Cinema lifts the coffin lid on forty contemporary vampire films, from 1992 to the present day, charting the evolution of a genre that is, rather like its subject, at once exhausted and vibrant, inauthentic and 'original', insubstantial and self-sustaining. Ken Gelder's fascinating study begins by looking at Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula and Fran Rubel Kuzui's Buffy the Vampire Slayer – films that seemed for a moment to take vampire cinema in completely opposite directions. New Vampire Cinema then examines what happened afterwards, across a remarkable range of reiterations of the vampire that take it far beyond its original Transylvanian setting: the suburbs of Sweden (Let the Right One In), the forests of North America (the Twilight films), New York City (Nadja, The Addiction), Mexico (Cronos, From Dusk Till Dawn), Japan (Blood: The Last Vampire,
