Michael Powell is one of the world's foremost figures in numerical analysis. This volume, first published in 1997, is derived from invited talks given at a meeting celebrating his 60th birthday and, reflecting Powell's own achievements, focuses on innovative work in optimisation and in approximation theory. The individual papers have been written by leading authorities in their subjects and are a mix of expository articles and surveys. They have all been reviewed and edited to form a coherent volume for this important discipline within mathematics, with highly relevant applications throughout science and engineering.

Nonlinear Analysis by Qamrul Hasan Ansari Pdf

Many of our daily-life problems can be written in the form of an optimization problem. Therefore, solution methods are needed to solve such problems. Due to the complexity of the problems, it is not always easy to find the exact solution. However, approximate solutions can be found. The theory of the best approximation is applicable in a variety of problems arising in nonlinear functional analysis and optimization. This book highlights interesting aspects of nonlinear analysis and optimization together with many applications in the areas of physical and social sciences including engineering. It is immensely helpful for young graduates and researchers who are pursuing research in this field, as it provides abundant research resources for researchers and post-doctoral fellows. This will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone who works in the field of applied mathematics, economics and engineering.

Duality for Nonconvex Approximation and Optimization by Ivan Singer Pdf

The theory of convex optimization has been constantly developing over the past 30 years. Most recently, many researchers have been studying more complicated classes of problems that still can be studied by means of convex analysis, so-called "anticonvex" and "convex-anticonvex" optimizaton problems. This manuscript contains an exhaustive presentation of the duality for these classes of problems and some of its generalization in the framework of abstract convexity. This manuscript will be of great interest for experts in this and related fields.

A Course in Approximation Theory by Elliott Ward Cheney,William Allan Light Pdf

This textbook is designed for graduate students in mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. Its purpose is to guide the reader in exploring contemporary approximation theory. The emphasis is on multi-variable approximation theory, i.e., the approximation of functions in several variables, as opposed to the classical theory of functions in one variable. Most of the topics in the book, heretofore accessible only through research papers, are treated here from the basics to the currently active research, often motivated by practical problems arising in diverse applications such as science, engineering, geophysics, and business and economics. Among these topics are projections, interpolation paradigms, positive definite functions, interpolation theorems of Schoenberg and Micchelli, tomography, artificial neural networks, wavelets, thin-plate splines, box splines, ridge functions, and convolutions. An important and valuable feature of the book is the bibliography of almost 600 items directing the reader to important books and research papers. There are 438 problems and exercises scattered through the book allowing the student reader to get a better understanding of the subject.

Optimal Estimation in Approximation Theory by Charles Michelli Pdf

The papers in this volume were presented at an International Symposium on Optimal Estimation in Approximation Theory which was held in Freudenstadt, Federal Republic of Germany, September 27-29, 1976. The symposium was sponsored by the IBM World Trade Europe/Middle East/Africa Corporation, Paris, and IBM Germany. On behalf of all the participants we wish to express our appreciation to the spon sors for their generous support. In the past few years the quantification of the notion of com plexity for various important computational procedures (e. g. multi plication of numbers or matrices) has been widely studied. Some such concepts are necessary ingredients in the quest for optimal, or nearly optimal, algorithms. The purpose of this symposium was to present recent results of similar character in the field or ap proximation theory, as well as to describe the algorithms currently being used in important areas of application of approximation theory such as: crystallography, data transmission systems, cartography, reconstruction from x-rays, planning of radiation treatment, optical perception, analysis of decay processes and inertial navigation system control. It was the hope of the organizers that this con frontation of theory and practice would be of benefit to both groups. Whatever success th•~ symposium had is due, in no small part, to the generous and wise scientific counsel of Professor Helmut Werner, to whom the organizers are most grateful. Dr. T. J. Rivlin Dr. P. Analysis II by Revaz V. Gamkrelidze Pdf

Intended for a wide range of readers, this book covers the main ideas of convex analysis and approximation theory. The author discusses the sources of these two trends in mathematical analysis, develops the main concepts and results, and mentions some beautiful theorems. The relationship of convex analysis to optimization problems, to the calculus of variations, to optimal control and to geometry is considered, and the evolution of the ideas underlying approximation theory, from its origins to the present day, is discussed. The book is addressed both to students who want to acquaint themselves with these trends and to lecturers in mathematical analysis, optimization and numerical methods, as well as to researchers in these fields who would like to tackle the topic as a whole and seek inspiration for its further development.

Exact Constants in Approximation Theory by Nikolaĭ Pavlovich Korneĭchuk Pdf

This book is intended as a self-contained introduction for non-specialists, or as a reference work for experts, to the particular area of approximation theory that is concerned with exact constants. The results apply mainly to extremal problems in approximation theory, which in turn are closely related to numerical analysis and optimization. The book encompasses a wide range of questions and problems: best approximation by polynomials and splines; linear approximation methods, such as spline-approximation; optimal reconstruction of functions and linear functionals. Many of the results are based on deep facts from analysis and function theory, such as duality theory and comparison theorems; these are presented in chapters 1 and 3. In keeping with the author's intention to make the book as self-contained as possible, chapter 2 contains an introduction to polynomial and spline approximation. Chapters 4 to 7 apply the theory to specific classes of functions. The last chapter deals with n-widths and generalises some of the ideas of the earlier chapters. Each chapter concludes with commentary, exercises and extensions of results. A substantial bibliography is included. Many of the results collected here have not been gathered together in book form before, so it will be essential reading for approximation theorists.
