Archetype Revisited by Anthony Stevens Pdf

Archetype: A Natural History of the Self, first published in 1982 was a ground-breaking book; the first to explore the connections between Jung's archetypes and evolutionary disciplines such as ethology and sociobiology, and an excellent introduction to the archetypes in theory and practical application as well. C.G. Jung's 'archetypes of the collective unconscious' have traditionally remained the property of analytical psychology, and have commonly been dismissed as 'mystical' by scientists. But Jung himself described them as biological entities, which, if they exist at all, must be amenable to empirical study. In the work of Bowlby and Lorenz, and in recent studies of the bilateral brain, Dr Anthony Stevens has discovered the key to opening up this long-ignored scientific approach to the archetypes, originally envisaged by Jung himself. At last, in a creative leap made possible by the cross-fertilisation of several specialist disciplines, psychiatry can be integrated with psychology, with ethology and biology. The result is an immensely enriched science of human behaviour. In this revised, updated edition, Anthony Stevens considers the enormous cultural, social and intellectual changes that have taken place in the past 20 years, and includes: * An updated chapter on The Archetypal Masculine and Feminine, reflecting recent research findings and developments in the thinking of feminists * Commentary on the intrusion of neo-Darwinian thinking into psychology and psychiatry * Analysis of what has happened to the archetype in the past 20 years in terms of our understanding of it and our responses to it

Living Archetypes by Anthony Stevens Pdf

Anthony Stevens has devoted a lifetime to modernizing our understanding of the archetypes within us, relating them to conceptual developments in a variety of scientific disciplines, such as the patterns of behaviour of behavioural ecology, the species-specific behavioural systems of Bowlby’s attachment theory, the deep structures of Chomskian linguistics, and the modules of evolutionary psychology, to name but a few. This selection of papers and chapters from the course of Stevens’ career, all lucidly written and argued, highlight episodes in the progress of his quest to place archetypal theory on a sound scientific foundation. As a whole, Living Archetypes examines how archetypes are activated in the life history of all of us, how archetypal imperatives may be fulfilled or thwarted by our living circumstances, how they manifest in our dreams, symbols, fantasies and symptoms, and how appreciating their dynamics can generate insights of enormous therapeutic power. Living Archetypes: The Selected Works of Anthony Stevens provides an invaluable resource for Jungian psychotherapists, psychologists, academics and students committed to extending the evolutionary approach to psychology and psychiatry and understanding the dynamic significance of archetypes.

The Innateness of Myth by Ritske Rensma Pdf

Joseph Campbell (1904-1988) was one of the most well-known and popular scholars of myth and comparative religion of the twentieth century. His work, however, has never fully received the same amount of scholarly interest and critical reflection that some of his contemporaries have received. In this book, based on extensive research in the Joseph Campbell Archive in Santa Barbara, Ritske Rensma shows that reflecting on C.G. Jung's influence on Campbell greatly furthers our understanding of these ideas, and that once this goal is achieved it becomes obvious that Campbell was a scholar whose ideas are still of significance today. Following Jung's lead, Campbell put great emphasis on the innate structures of the mind, an approach which pre-echoes the current 'evolutionary turn' in fields such as cognitive theory, psychology, psychiatry and neurobiology. This study will therefore not just be of interest to students and scholars interested in psychological approaches to the study of religion as well as Jung and Campbell, but also to those with an interest in recent developments in the above-mentioned fields

The Theory of Archetypes Revisited by James S. Larson Pdf

This book is a collection of essays on "The Theory of Archetypes" (Nova Science Publishers, 2004), a book which the author wrote. The Theory says that the human sense of self is an archetype, or original model, for thinking in the social sciences. It affects the way we see the world and the way we structure social behaviour and institutions. In this book the theory is applied to several new areas: an empirical study of decision making, the global economy, and the theology of the Christian trinity. It is hoped that the reader will find these essays both provocative and informative.

Main Street Revisited by Richard V. Francaviglia Pdf

As an archetype for an entire class of places, Main Street has become one of America's most popular and idealized images. In Main Street Revisited, the first book to place the design of small downtowns in spatial and chronological context, Richard Francaviglia finds the sources of romanticized images of this archetype, including Walt Disney's Main Street USA, in towns as diverse as Marceline, Missouri, and Fort Collins, Colorado. Francaviglia interprets Main Street both as a real place and as an expression of collective assumptions, designs, and myths; his Main Streets are treasure troves of historic patterns. Using many historical and contemporary photographs and maps for his extensive fieldwork and research, he reveals a rich regional pattern of small-town development that serves as the basis for American community design. He underscores the significance of time in the development of Main Street's distinctive personality, focuses on the importance of space in the creation of place, and concentrates on popular images that have enshrined Main Street in the collective American consciousness.

Four Eternal Women by Mary Dian Molton,Lucy Anne Sikes Pdf

Toni Wolff was at first the patient, and later the friend, mistress for a time, long-term colleague and personal analyst of Swiss Psychiatrist Carl Jung. In addition to her work as the founder, leader and teacher for the Psychological Society in Z rich which led to the establishment of the world-renowned C.G. Jung Institute in Z rich/K snacht, she published a seminal but little known work called "Structural Forms of the Feminine Psyche" ("Der Psychologie," Berne, 1951). This treatise, certainly one of the first studies in Analytical Psychology, has been the subject of the authors' investigation, attention, research and study for the past twelve years. Toni Wolff's original outline of her four archetypes barely filled fifteen pages of the journal, and was written in the academic style of professional publications of that period, sans illustration or commentary. While Wolff's work has been mentioned in short form in the work of several writers, Four Eternal Women is the first full and serious archetypal delineation of her original thesis, and examines each of her four feminine archetypes from several perspectives: Wolff's Own Words; An Overview of History and Myth; Familiar Characteristics; Lesser-Known (Shadow) Possibilities; Career Inclinations; Relationships to Men; Relationships to Children; Relationships to Each of the Other Types; The tension of the opposites set up by Wolff's own diagrammatic representation of these archetypes provided an additional dynamic to this study. Those who have followed Jung's individuation path will recognize aspects of Jung's 'Transcendent Function.' All readers may well become personally sensitized to discover their own type preferences, and how some aspects of shadow may be present in their 'opposite' partner.

Alien Theory by Patricia Monk Pdf

From the early days of pulp magazines to contemporary works of science fiction, the subject of the alien has been a fertile and enduring--if not also the most vital--element of the genre. In Alien Theory, author Patricia Monk asserts that the creation of the alien in short fiction contributes substantially to humanity's understanding of its present status and future potential in the universe. By employing a Jungian and archetypal approach to these stories, Monk attempts to direct the attention of readers to the significance of the vast body of imaginative fiction about the alien, arguing that studying the alien will reveal why this archetype is necessary in the development of humanity's understanding of its own intrinsic nature as a sapient being. When a science fiction writer writes about aliens, Monk asserts, he or she is saying something that can--and should--be taken seriously by readers. Furthermore, it is being expressed in a particular story-telling mode that deserves to be treated with respect. By discussing the creation of the form of the science-fictional alien, its psyche and the context in which aliens and humans interact, Monk brings into focus a topic that has not been given the rightful discussion it deserves. In addition to examining the alien in the science fiction short story, novella, and novelette, Monk evaluates its role in pre-postmodernist and postmodernist criticism and theory. The author also draws on relevant writings by editors, writers, and fans--including editorial letter columns and reviews--to place the stories in the context of science fiction. By drawing on all of these sources, Alien Theory brings into focus a topic that will be of interest not only to academics and students, but also to the general reader.

Semiotics and Information Sciences by Paul Perron Pdf

Very little has been done to show the explicit connection between the representation and the study of information despite the obvious relation that exists between them. The purpose of the conference held at Victoria College at the University of Toronto in October 1998 - titled Semiotics and the Information Sciences - was precisely to focus attention on this pivotal nexus, especially given that we now live in a so-called information age where it is becoming increasingly more difficult to distinguish between information itself and its interpretation. The invited papers appearing in this volume, given by experts in semiotics and the information sciences, that were designed to investigate this relation by analysis, explication and illustration, contain significant implications for studying information in the future.
