Diagnosis in Otorhinolaryngology by T. Metin Önerci Pdf

In preparing the material for this book, I took the advice of my students who generously shared their views and opinions with me. I was told that it would be preferable to have images of the various diseases with legends describing the disease. Students would be able to learn and retain the inf- mation more successfully if the material was accompanied by pictures and schematic drawings. Recent advances in technology have made it possible to photograph regions that are difcult to view with the naked eye, such as the ear, nose, throat, nasopharynx, and larynx – all the areas of otorhinolaryngology. Such an illustrated text in this feld is important and necessary for teaching purposes. In this book I tried to compile images of the basic conditions that are commonly seen in general practice and to give the reader a visual survey with a brief description of the condition. I added tables and schematic drawings in order to provide practical information. It is not the purpose of this book to be a comprehensive textbook, since many textbooks are already available with more detailed information of the conditions illustrated here. This book is primarily intended for medical students, family and general practitioners, and ENT trainees. It may also serve as basic reading material for those in allied specialties. I hope my colleagues fnd this book useful and it contributes toward their teaching purposes.

Active Middle Ear Implants by Klaus Böheim Pdf

In recent years, methods for coupling active implants to the middle ear, round window or combinations of passive middle ear prostheses have progressed considerably. Patient selection criteria have expanded from purely sensorineural hearing losses to conductive and mixed hearing losses in difficult-to-treat ears. This book takes into consideration recently developed methods as well as devices in current use. It begins with a fascinating and authentic history of active middle ear implants, written by one of the main pioneers in the field. In the following chapters, leading scientists and clinicians discuss the relevant topics in otology and audiology. Treatments for sensorineural hearing loss, conductive and mixed hearing losses, and results on alternative coupling sites such as the stapes footplate and the oval window are also covered, as well as articles on candidacy and cost-effectiveness. This publication is a must for ENT professionals and surgeons seeking out the latest knowledge on current research and clinical applications of active middle ear implants for all types of hearing loss.

Otolaryngology Cases by Myles L. Pensak Pdf

There is a nice consistent style...which makes for very easy reading and not just dipping in at random...The brief, punchy style of this book is highly recommended to all trainees and, at least as much, to their trainers. -- The Journal of Laryngology & Otology In the tradition of the acclaimed first edition, experts from the University of Cincinnati's Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery present new case reviews. Every chapter presents patient-based scenarios to prepare practitioners for ENT cases they will encounter during rounds, rotations, and patient exams. By establishing a uniform algorithm in obtaining and utilizing discreet points of data, the authors encourage a disciplined approach to patient assessment and management options. Sections organized by anatomy and subspecialty enhance the ability to learn and retain knowledge. For example, benign and malignant pathologies are systematically detailed in anatomical sections dedicated to the neurovascular structures, oral cavity and pharynx, larynx, thyroid, salivary gland, and skin. The text covers the full age continuum - including congenital, acquired, benign, and malignant disorders such as pediatric subglottic stenosis and facial, head, and neck cancers that primarily affect adults. Key Highlights Presentation of 100 practical cases including history, differential diagnoses, test interpretations, definitive diagnoses, medical and surgical management, rehabilitation, and follow-up. Up-to-date coverage of every major ENT specialty: otology and neurotology, the skull base, rhinology, laryngology, head and neck cancer, sleep disorders, pediatric otolaryngology, trauma, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Nearly 150 meticulous color photographs and graphics elucidate disease characteristics and clinical findings Chapter bibliographies with current literature sources augment case reviews. Multiple-choice questions serve as a robust study tool, optimizing knowledge acquisition and retention. This must-have resource enables otolaryngology residents and practitioners to learn from case studies and incorporate state-of-the-art techniques into daily practice, thereby optimizing patient care.

Care at the Close of Life: Evidence and Experience by Stephen J. McPhee,Margaret A. Winker,Michael W. Rabow,Steven Z. Pantilat,Amy J. Markowitz Pdf

From one of the world’s leading medical journals comes the definitive evidence-based, full-color guide to end-of-life and palliative care "...represents an important milestone in the evolution of care for people with advanced disease—-for which its editors and authors and JAMA should be rightly proud. It is wonderful that JAMA had the foresight to publish a series on this topic, which, as medicine has become more technologically advanced and subspecialized, is often overlooked and, sometimes worse, avoided....this book will be invaluable for front-line clinicians, and indeed all health care practitioners—as care at the close of life is a part of almost all of medicine’s specialties and settings."--Irene J. Higginson, BMBS, PhD, FPPHM, FRCP; Dept. of Palliative Care, Policy, & Rehabilitation; Cicely Saunders Institute; King's College London (from the foreword) A new addition to the JAMAevidence series, Care at the Close of Life: Evidence and Experience offers evidence-based and clinical expert guidance on caring for patients with life-limiting illness, incorporating the words and perspectives of affected patients, their families, and treating clinicians. Organized by these actual clinical cases, the book is based on the acclaimed 7-year series of 42 articles, originally published in JAMA as “Perspectives on Care at the Close of Life,” and now thoroughly updated as chapters and featuring extensive never-before-published material. Care at the Close of Life covers are a wide range of clinical syndromes, disease processes, communication challenges, health-care delivery settings, and issues faced by patients, including withdrawal of dialysis and other life-sustaining measures, cross-cultural approaches, and the role of chemotherapy. Throughout the book, emphasis is on the principles of palliative care, with the patient and family at the center of care, and with attention given to all problems—physical, psychological, social, and spiritual. Reflecting this focus, each chapter begins with a patient case study to introduce the clinical problem, followed by “perspectives” that draw on extensive, real-world dialogue between clinicians, patients, and families. Internationally renowned authors then review the typical challenges illustrated by the case, offering state-of-the-art, evidence-based assessment and treatment approaches. Features Fully revised and updated text with new evidence and references, including the search methodology for each chapter’s update Evidence-based orientation presents the current state of knowledge in the care of terminally ill patients and support for their families and caregivers Practical clinical guidance and approaches from international experts in palliative care Self-assessment Q&A, for reinforcing your knowledge of each chapter’s content and for preparing for exams A useful Glossary of acronyms, terms, and tests Updated Resources for each chapter offer current, authoritative sources of diagnostic and treatment information that can help you optimize palliative care Medline PubMed ID numbers facilitate quick, convenient access to references
