Around and about the Custom House by Jane Meredith Pdf

There has been much written about James Gandon's great masterpiece, completed in 1791, and plans, paintings, drawings, etchings, photographs, etc. abound. This selection of images, each with its own commentary, takes a detailed look at the Custom House and its surrounds over the last two centuries from the point of view of the changes in the structure of the building itself, dock development and dockside activity, the adjoining buildings in Beresford Place and on the Quays, river traffic and the movement of bridges towards the sea. The title itself evokes the nature the contents which are introduced by noted architectural historian, Maurice Craig.

The Customs House by Andrew Motion Pdf

Andrew Motion's new book opens with a sequence of war poems (first published as the pamphlet Laurels and Donkeys, on Armistice Day 2010), drawing on soldiers' experiences of war from 1914 until today - beginning with a story about Siegfried Sassoon and moving via World War Two and Korea to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of the poems are in the voices of combatants, others are based on memories of the poet's father, who landed at D-day and fought in France and Germany. The poems combine understatement with a clear-eyed and unswerving candour. The Customs House has other rooms: a group of topographies, mapping moments in a marriage against the contingencies of place and family history; and several 'found poems', in which the poet collaborates with his source, mixing what is there already with what is about to be there: whether a remarkable sonnet sequence on the last days of the Baroque genius Francesco Borromini, or in other poems a richly imagined extrapolation from the silent premises of a painting.

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne Pdf

Jules Gabriel Verne (1828–1905) was a French poet, playwright, and novelist famous for his well-documented novels set in the second half of the nineteenth century, including “Journey to the Center of the Earth” (1864) and “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas” (1870). Besides novels, he also produced many short stories, plays, poems, literary studies, and autobiographical accounts. Verne had a significant impact on surrealism and the literary avant-garde in France and Europe, and is considered to be among its most important authors. Part of his “Voyages extraordinaires” series of best-selling adventure novels, “Around the World in Eighty Days” (1872) is the classic tale of Phileas Fogg and his newly-employed French valet Passepartout who embark on a quest to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days for a £20,000 bet. One of Verne's most famous and celebrated work, “Around the World in Eighty Days” has inspired many real-life attempts to follow Fogg's trip as well as numerous plays, films, games, and more. Dockside Reading by Isabel Hofmeyr Pdf

In Dockside Reading Isabel Hofmeyr traces the relationships among print culture, colonialism, and the ocean through the institution of the British colonial Custom House. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, dockside customs officials would leaf through publications looking for obscenity, politically objectionable materials, or reprints of British copyrighted works, often dumping these condemned goods into the water. These practices, echoing other colonial imaginaries of the ocean as a space for erasing incriminating evidence of the violence of empire, informed later censorship regimes under apartheid in South Africa. By tracking printed matter from ship to shore, Hofmeyr shows how literary institutions like copyright and censorship were shaped by colonial control of coastal waters. Set in the environmental context of the colonial port city, Dockside Reading explores how imperialism colonizes water. Hofmeyr examines this theme through the concept of hydrocolonialism, which puts together land and sea, empire and environment.

Customs and Excise by William J. Ashworth Pdf

This book traces the growth of customs and excise, and their integral role in shaping the framework of industrial England; including state power, technical advance, and the evolution of a consumer society. Central to this structure was the development of two economies - one legal and one illicit. If there was a unique English pathway of industrialization, it was less a distinct entrepreneurial and techno-centric culture, than one predominantly defined within an institutional framework spearheaded by the excise and a wall of tariffs. This process reached its peak by the end of the 1770s. The structure then quickly started to crumble under the weight of the fiscal-military state, and Pitt's calculated policy of concentrating industrial policy around cotton, potteries, and iron - at the expense of other taxed industries. The breakthrough of the new political economy was the erosion of the illicit economy; the smugglers' free trade now became the state's most powerful weapon in the war against non-legal trade. If at the beginning of the period covered by this book state administration was predominantly deregulated and industry regulated, by the close the reverse was the case.
